In the Past 4 Years Revenue Has Declined 80-90%

I had to do a double take when I read this remark from the latest XBIZ.

Quote:
Barnett said it's already hard enough for an adult entrepreneur to make a profit since in the past four years revenue has declined industrywide by 80-90 percent, partly because of the popularity of tube sites operated abroad. Barnett said his own business has shrunk by 50 percent during the past four years.

I am not sure where he came up with that number, but....

I think he's a bit out on the %, still it's definitely declined since Tubes. The massive amount of traffic they get and the conversion rates and price of ads. Tells the truth.

Same here. But I will openly admit that fetish, shot by people who actually understand it, is a completely different animal than vanilla mainstream porn. At some point, that shit looks like it's shot from an assembly line, or to get laid.

I figure our sales are a meta-indicator for the industry as a whole because if webmasters aren't making money and aren't opening new sites, they aren't buying software. We haven't seen any 80% or 90% drop.

Looking at the economy of prime market, real average earnings in the US are down 25% from 1980s-1990s levels. In the last three years, real median household income is down slightly and that matches up with what we see - it ain't the 80s or 90s anymore, it isn't even 2008, but it's not down 90% from 2008.

Indeed.

However, typically at some point you have to back up those numbers or claims.

What kind of drop have you seen? I've noticed many designers, programmers, domainers and others in the industry have been hit hard. Especially if their business relied in great part on business from adult affiliates.

I think 80-90% might be a little high but 20-50% over the last four years is likely. There are many who are doing better but it's usually because their traffic has increased disproportionately to offset it.

I think that is relative.

I know that the different programmers and designers I have worked with over the past 4 years are scaling up. Konrad as an example went from a one man show, to an office with a bunch of dudes. There are a number of other outfits in the HIRING section looking to bring on staff and expand as well.

While I do believe that 'some' are seeing numbers drop, there are others who are growing.

Like all statistics, pulled straight from the ass. Though can agree I know more people who's sales are down than are up.

6 years in (for the program) and not complaining at all. Some businesses are built for the short term. Others are not.

We've made 20% more $ every year, but we also add 1-2 sites a year, and they keep updating.

I guess if you had a dead site that you didn't update, it would make 10% what it did in year 4 than it did in year 1. In that case, yeah. Down 90% man.

It's difficult to find an industry that hasn't taken a hit since we've been in a global recession.

Idk, about the niche fetish thing. Fetish is also waaay down. Sites closing up left and right... by folks that understood the niche because they are lifestyle fetishists themselves. Go to the legwebasters board that jscott runs, for example, there are sites closing down literally every week.

Now one of the things that fetishists fall into when they start a site is that they only shoot the shit that they like, ie, soles, arches, bottoms, hammer toes, etc. So that they are micro niche inside of a micro niche because they only love the parts of the feet that they like and everything else sucks, lol. Of course that is not going to convert as well as a broader spectrum of the niche, so I can see that webmaster getting discouraged, much sooner.

Alot of sites are just down in 2012 imho. ...actually, since 2006

How on earth can anybody know that revenue of the full porn industry declined by 90%
The small home based companies don't keep books and don't pay tax
the medium size companies keep double books and pay little tax
the big ones all work with some kind of offshore solution
The Russian tubes and filelockers don't pay any tax at all
If he means that the US tax dept receives 90% less from the porn industry than 10 years ago, yes that would make sense

Both of you are wrong. There comes a point where a program get's into seo & internal traffic & doesnt rely on affiliates although obviously they are appreciated. Everyone who has coded for the big guys & seen our numbers vs theirs is that 85% or more of our sales are in house.

as far as Raymor's coments the industry got smaller in number of companies but not in $. Most outgrow a strongbox or pennywize & go for a custom solution or use strongbox as a fallback.
just my 2 cents but what do I know.
