Anybody watching Doomsday Preppers?

Most of the people on that show are idiots. One family the husband has basically bankrupt the family, he spends all his time prepping while his wife works to support the family. She was in tears on the show. Pathetic.

I only saw the promo commercials but I couldn't help but think those morbidly obese people would be fucked if civilization collapsed because they wouldn't get their diabetes treatments.

What I find funny is that most of the doomsday scenarios that face this planet eg: sun dying, asteroid hitting the earth, nuclear holocaust, viral or bacteriological disaster are pretty much unsurvivable if all you're relying on is a few months of food and a bunker.

The best thing you can try to do with these people is milk them by selling doomsday survival shit because they are well beyond reason or common sense.

The last thing a smart prepper wants is the entire world knowing what he is doing. All these preppers they do shows on are plain weirdos.

I saw the couple who were making some kind of self-sustaining hippie eco-system in their swimming pool. The is was in the middle of the suburbs. As soon as the shit hits the fan, someone will come in there, rape his wife, kill him and take the whole setup.

There are different levels of prepping. "Doomsday" preppers tend to be a loony, planning for the end of civilization. Then you have smart people who just want to have a couple of months worth of water / food in the event of a small disaster or power outage. Then you have the in-between guys who are trying to plan for the US economic / currency collapse that is probably coming in the somewhat future. Last, you have people who just want to be as self sustainable as possible, because that is just how they live. I wouldn't really call the last group "preppers" but they get lumped in with them often.

It's been so profitable this year I sold my 2006 Titan and came home with this. It's a 6 month old 2011 Dodge diesel truck and I out-right bought it. Mine is white, but the exact same model with 2300 miles and a 70k bumper to bumper warranty and my first diesel.

After selling my other truck and the survival/Doomsday profits from the begging of the year, how could you not get in on this paranoid gold rush?
That is a nice truck.

Was just watching yesterday how a lot of people are concerting their diesels to run on cooking oil waste.

If nothing else the show is pretty funny, which it's meant to be. The only ones who don't seem to be in on the joke are the people being profiled. They had this girl on the other day, she was in Houston or San Antonio, some city in Texas. She was preparing an evacuation route out of the city through drainage ditches and sewers (to avoid the roving bands of crazed murderers), because she's convinced that a global oil crisis is going to end civilization as we know it. So once she got out of the city her plan was to go to Mexico. because, you know, in the event of some catastrophic disaster, the first place you would want to go would be a bastion of civilization like Ciudad Juarez.

Sun Dies-GAME OVER

Asteroid-depends on it's size and how much dirt is kicked up but most likely GAME OVER

Nuclear Holocaust-Depends on how many and how big the nukes are but most likely GAME OVER

Viral Pandamic-SURVIVABLE if you are set up away from a city and have supplies for 6 months or more.

Super Volcano_Depends on how big the eruption is. Would need food for 2 to 4 years minimum and your own water supply.

Bingo. My thoughts exactly. Did you see the one where the guy was showing off for the cameras and shot his thumb off? They were in the desert and if the film crew had not had a medic with them he would have been really fucked.

I was in the Loma Prieta Earthquake where we had no power for three days. Sounds like fun, but no power means no stores, no cooking, no fridge. Canned goods was the only way to go.

In Phoenix years ago the main gas line shut down for weeks, and the entire city ran out of gas. Gas stations just had no gas.

Last year most my hometown was evacuated on short notice due to a large propane fire. I didn't have to leave, but nearly everyone in town I know did.

Between the two I'm pretty well prepared. We have enough canned goods to last three of us a month, plus a way to cook if we have no power. We have clothes and gear packed in the garage in the event we need to leave the house quickly. I also have extra gas on hand too.

If we need to leave the house and head to the hills, I can load my truck up in ten minutes and we'll be good to go for a while.

I didn't see the episode, but they did a piece on The Colbert Report about the show the other day and they showed the guy with his hand all bandaged up. He might want to start practicing some fucking trigger discipline before he starts preparing for the apocalypse. I think for a lot of them it's an excuse for stockpiling weapons and other obsessive behaviors.

They had this one guy who was a truck driver, he was prepping his big rig to be like a mobile bunker. He had a sewing machine set up in the back for his wife to hand-make clothes out of burlap sacks or some shit. God knows why. I guess they figure when the shit hits the fan there will be no more clothes...anywhere.

I'm prepping for a Zombie Apocalypse. I know it probably won't happen, but at least it's much cooler than all the others that probably won't happen.

prepping is bullshit...the minute the shit hits the fan people will loot your supply...you can own as much guns as you want, one bottle of gasoline and a burning rug will make you run out of your burning shelter and you will be picked off like its nothing...if anybody and I mean ANYBODY knows about your stash the minute the hunger hits you will be visited...prepare to die or hand over your food...

i really know about this stuff I was in 2 wars....

If you want my advice on how to prepare for doomsday:

buy cigarettes, they keep for a long time, when the shit hits the fan food will run out quick anyway, you will be forced to pay like 10$ for an egg or 20$ for a gallon of milk, but cigarettes will appreciate in value accordingly...never underestimate the value of cigarettes to tobacco addicts ...you would be amazed at how far a carton box of maleys will last you if traded for food...do not trade food!!!!!! people will think you have a supply!!! never make them think this!!!!!! cigs are a whole different story...nobody will think you have a cig stash....

forget stashing money and gold, go for cigs and medicine...also a clean water supply/filter and a power generator that runs on diesel is a very very wise move...

also screw shelters, you do not want to be trapped inside a burning shelter...go for the woods...

Yep that was him. On the show they said that during filming his gun went off and shot his thumb off. Dumbass was showing off and accidently pulled the trigger. He ended up having the tip re attatched to the nub so now he has a mini thumb. Then after all this he was joking around with his kids about it talking about how "dad passed out". He tried to pass it off like it's no big deal. I was like WTF dude, your thumb is fucked for life and you still are shooting this show acting like it was a minor injury. Me and my daughter was wachting and she was like wow, why would anyone ever put a part of their body in front of a loaded gun. How do you shoot your own thumb off?

They also have 65 and 90 gallon models. http://www.auxtank.com/auxtank/home.asp

even with the wackos you can learn things though....some do have good ideas
Yep, some good ideas for sure. One show a guy was using a galvanized trash can as a faraday cage. He even hooked up a car battery to it with radios inside to prove it worked. He called it a redneck faraday cage. lol. I have dozens of flexable solar panels so I went to Tractor Supply found 10 gallon ones and each fits 2 of these solar panels when they are rolled up. Perfect fit and just what I needed.

So you're preparing for a nuclear war, then?

Nah, only thing I am really concerned about is solar flares. Google solar flares for the last 5 years. It's a real threat, not imaginary. I do have a couple geiger counters but no radiation suits or shit like that. Melt downs of nuclear reactors if a solar flare big enough to knock out the power grid occurs does concern me, but not much you can do long term to survive severe radiation.

Great idea, but after talking to sales guy is comes with an additional fuel gauge? Meaning, you were able to wire your ancillary tank to your OEM gauge primary? Also, did you install it yourself? - At what fuel level do you switch to the second tank to be safe? Finally, is that Rhino Liner in your bed rig?

Sorry to machine gun you with so many questions, but this is my first diesel and a truly awesome idea. ...

Thanks,
JHC
Hey, sorry about costing you money, lol. I had a friend install mine. He has both tanks working off the factory fuel gauge. On a trip I'll run to the low fuel idiot light before changing tanks. Around town I just flip back and forth when it gets down to a quarter. Be careful though if you run out, diesels are a bitch to restart. Have someone show you how just in case.

Yea that's a Rhino liner and it's great. Both the tank and liner were installed about 9 years ago and no problems with either. Truck's a 2002. Also took it to Banks and had them install a turbo with stainless headers and exhaust. The torque is awsome and I can bury the speedometer in seconds, lol. Plus it get's low 20 mpg on the highway.
