I was in the Loma Prieta Earthquake where we had no power for three days. Sounds like fun, but no power means no stores, no cooking, no fridge. Canned goods was the only way to go.
In Phoenix years ago the main gas line shut down for weeks, and the entire city ran out of gas. Gas stations just had no gas.
Last year most my hometown was evacuated on short notice due to a large propane fire. I didn't have to leave, but nearly everyone in town I know did.
Between the two I'm pretty well prepared. We have enough canned goods to last three of us a month, plus a way to cook if we have no power. We have clothes and gear packed in the garage in the event we need to leave the house quickly. I also have extra gas on hand too.
If we need to leave the house and head to the hills, I can load my truck up in ten minutes and we'll be good to go for a while.
