Julian Assange to be charged by US Govt.

It's just been reported in Australia that the US Govt have charged Julian Assange of Wikileaks.

Only problem is what they are charging him with can only be acted upon in a time of war... in the way our forefathers wrote it...

It's about time! Who does this man think he is!? Releasing information about the U.S. Government to the U.S. people, as if we have the right as Americans to know what our government is doing. It's absurd! Fry him!

If Assange is extradited to the US to face trumped up charges then I'll be amongst the protesters demanding all US bases be pulled the fuck out of Australia.

If Australia tried to extradite an American citizen or charge an American citizen for an alleged crime committed outside of our jurisdiction then the US would send the Marines to rescue him.

The US can't claim jurisdiction over the whole world.

I doubt the US would go that far. Losing Pine Gap would cripple their electronic intelligence gathering ability and if the US were to assassinate Assange I'd guarantee thousands of Australians would be on buses on their way to pull the fences down there.

If all else fails, they will kill him. They would even kill 500 innocent civilians from your country just to get to him. You can count n that. And what would be done about it? Nothing. They would issue a statement regretting the "accident" and that would be that.

If the USA is not put in check, and fast, the rest of the world may as well just start paying taxes to IRS.

That is the amazing thing. Even with info like that leaking out, it doesn't even matter. The people don't care, other countries don't care, no one gives a shit no matter how corrupt it's found out they are.

No matter how bad these governments screw up or screw others over, it doesn't matter.

I fail to understand how the US can charge Julian Assange with anything. He is not a US citizen, and the actions he took did not take place on US soil. US law does not apply outside of the US. It's like arresting a Russian spy in Moscow because he worked for their intelligence agency. He could be charged under US law if he committed the crime in the US and was arrested in the US, otherwise, it's not even a crime.

Now, with that said, why the CIA has allowed him to continue to operate is stunning. I'm really surprised he hasn't been shot dead yet.

that's not true, he is still breaking american law and is subject to their laws because of it. As it is the same with any country.

cia doesn't 'allow' shit.. you guys watch too many movies.. they aren't in control of everything and kill off people to suit their needs.. they tried meddling like that in the past and realized it just makes more of a mess than it does fixing the problem. This is the same organization that couldn't even kill Castro despite hundreds of attempts...

The USA does whatever it wants, whenever it wants. Period. You don't like it, you're a terrorist and a threat to our national security. We may just kidnap you, lock you up in Gitmo with no trial, and hold you there forever where you will be tortured.

America, fuck ya.

Not "trying." They usually do it.

In my view, the real question is not whether Julian Assange broke the law by disclosing classified information, but whether he was justified doing so under a whistleblower theory.

He's got big balls, that's for sure. US Government is one of the toughest adversaries on the planet.

I see both sides to the argument, but I probably side with the US. Who is Assange to make that call? If you can't prevent him, you can't prevent anyone else.

Ultimately, the problem is the US voters who vote-in officials who make bad decisions. The voters and the media and courts are supposed to keep a check on these elected and appointed folks, such as GWB and Obama and April Glaspie and Hillary Clinton. Today's media is a joke, they do anything Obama tells them to do. "Investigative journalism, what's that?!"

Just because some newfangled technology called the internet allows some low level military geek (with the aid of Assange, a foreign citizen) to download thousands of sensitive cables and distribute them worldwide in one click.. does not justify this action.

I don't want breaches of security. I want better, more trustworthy government.

Obama has no problem executing US citizens without a trial, I'm surprised he doesn't just drop a bomb on him.

It's this US behavior that incited a bunch of Muslims to fly planes into two buildings. People all over the world, not just the Arab or Muslim communities, are completely sick and tired of the unilateral actions of the USA.

Ask most Aussies in the street and they will tell you they'd like the US to get fucked. The USA is responsible for so many great things, has produced excellent ideas, discoveries, thinkers, inventions and good policies. However it has also completely over-reached it's jurisdiction and bullied peoples from all over the world.

If the US acted a little less arrogantly then it might have a few more friends.
