22 from 27 member states have signed it, the rest will later (for some it needs to be ratified by the local parliament)
but still it needs to be ratified at the EU parliament also (later this year).. so there is still hope.. a small one lol

I get a kick how every law that is trying to curb piracy is turned into a Trojan horse, an attempt to take away freedom, censorship, a master plan to control us, no more free speech, disguised as something else, stripping us of our basic rights, world police, it will cause hunger, it's the end of the world. Never seen so much fear mongering in my entire life.

How about they just want to stop piracy and they need some laws with teeth to do it?

Current laws are WAY more dangerous than anything passed that may put an end to you getting free movies and videos online. But no one is blacking sites out over those, making cool After Effects videos about them, having Facebook protests and so on. But take away their free shit... oh my God... it will be the end of the world!!!!!

I don't think that is the case. If someone came up with a workable way of doing it. But they don't.

In this case, the ISPs are being forced to do deep packet inspection of ALL internet traffic. And you will get your internet connection cut off on the ALLEGATION you have committed a crime. Now, aside from the basic privacy that removes, who is going to pay for the ISPs to do all this extra work? What happens when the logs get leaked? What if you have a customer that is an MP that loves shitting fetish porn? Think he would take the risk of being a customer of your site? Then you have the fact that the 3 strikes rule has been proven to be totally ineffective in the countries that have tried it.

It's a shit law that is totally unworkable and takes away basic human rights.

That's why people are annoyed, hun, not because of piracy. Because of privacy.

I bet you Paul and Robbie will love it though. Pornographers in favour of government censorship. Fucking funny.

Yep, ACTA is must worse than SOPA or PIPA. I even believe the the second two were used as a red herring while ACTA was secretly discussed and signed.

Cool that Russia didn't sign it. At least yet...

Also good to see that Polish people are protesting. Looks like the EU is not as spineless as the USA...

Yes I stopped looking at the second one where it started to tell me, if you break the law. You've broken the law.

That would mean all those shouting it down, were actually scared of it and not just fear mongers.

The problem might be if a country doesn't sign up to it, does that country become the new haven for piracy?

Has China, Thailand, Philippines, India and various other countries who produce counterfeit goods signed up to it?

If you travel through US you have no privacy. Many Americans are still duped into thinking they have privacy...its loooooooooooooooooooooong gone.

They are considering unmanned drones over LA and I see cop cars around town with 6-8-10 antennas...Even cops laugh about privacy. Its history, man. Patriot Act saw to that.
As for the 'internets'...privacy? Yeah, tell me another one.

Laws have never stopped crime. Only those trying to grasp straws are using it as an excuse. Prisons confirm this.

Privacy, that's an interesting concept. Privacy in your own home? Yes. Privacy when flying from an airport, given up years ago. In fact before planes and airports. Lucas is an idiot if he thinks he can refuse to give a customs official access to search his personal belongings, including what he has on his laptop when asked or told to reveal everything. Well he can, and spend time in prison or get turned back. Been law for as long as I've known and long before the Internet and laptops.

Who said this was about censoring the porn industry? Which for your information is something else that has been happening since I can remember. Was censored in 1966 Porn Stories for more information.

Seriously you would think reading what some write we live in some Utopia where the Government doesn't have the right to peer into your lives if they wish to or that you can publish anything you like and no one will say anything.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks. The puzzle is why?

There's no puzzle, Paul. 3 strikes doesn't work. It *increases* piracy.

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/201...43228488.shtml

And that is only one of the many and varied reasons ACTA is ridiculous.

HTH.

Most countries aren't given the option as to whether they want to implement the new piracy laws. If they don't follow the US, then they are hit by trade sanctions until they summit to the pressure.

Doesn't seem that unreasonable .. But you would have to read the international treaty something few of you will do ..

Quote:
ARTICLE 2: NATURE AND SCOPE OF OBLIGATIONS
1.
Each Party shall give effect to the provisions of this Agreement. A Party may
implement in its law more extensive enforcement of intellectual property rights than is
required by this Agreement, provided that such enforcement does not contravene the
provisions of this Agreement. Each Party shall be free to determine the appropriate
method of implementing the provisions of this Agreement within its own legal system
and practice.

ARTICLE 33: INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
1.
Each Party recognizes that international cooperation is vital to realizing effective
protection of intellectual property rights and that it should be encouraged regardless of
the origin of the goods infringing intellectual property rights, or the location or
nationality of the right holder.
2.
In order to combat intellectual property rights infringement, in particular
trademark counterfeiting and copyright or related rights piracy, the Parties shall promote
cooperation, where appropriate, among their competent authorities responsible for the
enforcement of intellectual property rights. Such cooperation may include law
enforcement cooperation with respect to criminal enforcement and border measures
covered by this Agreement.
3.
Cooperation under this Chapter shall be conducted consistent with relevant
international agreements, and subject to the laws, policies, resource allocation, and law enforcement priorities of each Party.
This is the international treaty that you said would never happen Paul it's negotiations opened in 2006 -- there are 31 countries that are signatories ... I posted a link to the actual document last week ... https://gfy.com/showpost.php?p=18711733&postcount=4

Quote:
ACTA is a proposed plurilateral agreement for the purpose of establishing international standards on intellectual property rights enforcement.[1] It would establish an international legal framework for countries to join voluntarily,[5] and would create a governing body outside international institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) or the United Nations.[1][3]

This is already happening ...

The point is is that if Idontgiveafuckistan is not a signer, the pirates will just move there

So do you think all the organisations against ACTA have something to hide? Or, alternatively, do you think they think that privacy is quite a basic thing to have?

Your point is beyond banal.

So, back to the good one. Three strikes has been proven to increase piracy, so why are you in favour of it? Are you profiting from piracy and want to see more of it? Can't think of another reason, can you?

The golden days of "file sharing" are numbered....tick tick tick can you hear time running out?

Pirates can move, adapt, complain, whatever but fact is: The golden days are over

The money will start drying up QUICK, the big "file sharing" places will get shut down. Reorganizing will cost lots of $$ that pirates won't have. Most people will be too lazy to risk joining the new phishing/hacker "file sharing" sites that will pop up.

what do you even do in this biz, kid? it can't be much with intelligence like this.
here is what acta is:
The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is a plurilateral agreement for the purpose of establishing international standards for intellectual property rights enforcement. The agreement aims to establish an international legal framework for targeting counterfeit goods, generic medicines and copyright infringement on the Internet, and would create a new governing body outside existing forums, such as the World Trade Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, or the United Nations.

anything else is just conjecture and the smoke and mirrors thieves hide behind.

You guys that think privacy, fairness, and free speech advocates are all pirates are off your rockers.

I think piracy is one of the reasons we're going to loose most of the above. When the likes of the pirates bay advocate for the "free speech", in their own very specific sense of course... You know you're going to loose sooner or later.

Free speech advocates aren't worth the money they're paid.

Don't steal and you won't have to worry about your privacy or your free speech.
Stealing someone else's property in the name of free speech is stealing, not self expression.

While ACTA/SOPA/PIPA and all future flavours are clearly targeted at piracy, they are also targeted at sites like Wikileaks...

here is what acta is:
The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is a plurilateral agreement for the purpose of establishing international standards for intellectual property rights enforcement. The agreement aims to establish an international legal framework for targeting counterfeit goods, generic medicines and copyright infringement on the Internet, and would create a new governing body outside existing forums, such as the World Trade Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, or the United Nations.

anything else is just conjecture and the smoke and mirrors thieves hide behind.
You can cut and paste well, kid

So, three strike has been proven to increase piracy, so why do you think that's a good plan?

As a matter of fact ACTA was also signed by equally spineless USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. However those who end up with the hand in the shitter will be definitely EU countries while USA will make the most of it. It will hit and depress countries like Poland even more. I still strongly hope Poland will back out
