55,367 .xxx domain names registered in first 24 hours

http://domainnamewire.com/2011/12/07...irst-24-hours/

I wonder between sunrise and the launch (totaling 159,351 domains) how many domains were taken/blocked by mainstream companies protecting their brands.

What's the deal in the comments they are talking about tokens to activate and 60 day holds? You can't even go online for 2 months or what?

Maybe they need time to evaluate all names registered to see if they should play the registration error card and keep the domain for themselves or their friends.

I believe the holds refer to the amount of time before you're allowed to transfer ownership of the .xxx domain to someone else, not publishing. Which is kind of why I don't understand the recent Ebay auctions. How do they plan on transferring if the auction is successful?

2 separate things. One is a member validation email from ICMRegistry - takes about 24 hours. The 60 day hold is to sell or transfer the domain.

It appears account pushes can be done on them (transfer to different account at same registrar) but not transfers across registrars, which is similar to how .com and most other extensions operate. Nothing special really.

I actually like this extension and the terms of service.

I did not like .co. I did not think there was anything of long term or special value so I did not register one .co domain.

I do like .xxx and have registered just under 20. Most were through snapnames/moniker at $98 each.

I like that there is a real meaning with the .xxx. Visitors know what kind of content they are going to get.

I think people will start typing in domain .xxx to see what is there.

I like how no .xxx will resolve until the owner gets a Membership ID from the registry. This forces all registrants to at least in some small way verify their identity and have at least some commitment to their domains.

I like the $98 price. As Andrew said, this will keep speculation in check.

I like how there is a 60 day hold on all new regs as that too will keep speculation in check.

I look forward to the best parking solution and best development solution for .xxx domains as I think many registrants might be inclined to develop at least some of their .xxx domains.

I like the TV ad campaign for .xxx.

So, good luck to everyone.

Thanks. I don't really take the dislike personally, but you just made my day.

I do try to answer questions, and I'm sure I miss some just because this forum moves so fast. My email is always available for anyone not wanting to do the board thing - or if I miss something.

If you want to encourage spambots to contact you, you have to make it easier for them to read your email address. I've added you to the official ICM Registry email distribution list to ensure you get your share of spam. I certainly don't want you to miss something. Don't worry, no need to thank me.

why are you taking domains from people who have registered them when you like the domain yourself? And say it's just an error? Please answer this question.

We haven't taken domains from anyone that has registered them. General Availability began on the 6th, on a first come, first served basis. The process is automated. Registrars add their name to a queue on behalf of the registrant. If another Registrar requests the same name first - that's where it goes. There is no "taking back."

Have you ever registered a domain name with a new TLD the moment General Availability opened?

Yes actually I have. NEVER had that happen.

On top of that a lot of the ones I hear people talking about were registered HOURS after it opened.

And the worst part is some of the ones were in niches that Very FEW people use or are interested in.

Might was well admit it. You guys will take them and then turn around in a week or a bit more and offer them back at a MUCH higher rate.

I'll probably register 500 tonight...jk. I guess the question is really how useful will these domains really be? Will they outrank the .coms eventually with regards to SEO? Will they become the only extension legally able to contain adult content? Would be nice if someone had a crystal ball I could take a look into. If they do please let me know...

You're a lucky guy then.

And no, we're not 'taking back' domains. If people truly feel that there is an issue - they are welcome to email me and I will happily look into it.

.co had over 200,000 registrations in the first 16 hours. Even at the cheaper registry fee ($20 a year) .co still made more money in day one than ICM Registry. And even the new Russian cctld registered 200,000 domains in its first 6 hours when it launched in November 2010, and hit 800,000 by April 2011. If .xxx's disappointing numbers continue, Lawley will soon have to sell his race boat.
