Porn Shooters!!! DSLR comparison Panasonic AF100 vs Canon 5D Mark II

I started off shooting with the Panasonic AF100 for my DSLR stuff due to all the limitations of the 5D but in the end I found that the lenses and image quality of the 5D shines more even though its more difficult and less practical. If you are thinking about either camera take a look at these clips. I think both camera are awsome for porn but here are some pros and cons.

NO COLOR CORRECTION OR LEVELS WERE ADJUSTED THESE ARE RIGHT FROM THE CAMERAS

Uncompressed audio XLR/Phantom Power
Focusing Tools solid pro outputs for monitors
Face tracking automatic focuc tracking
Practical handgrip for handheld shooting

CONS -
Yellow shift when over exposed
4/3 sensor doesn't get as much depth at wide angles
skin tones were difficult to correct and look yellowish in bright light

Overall I think this camera is great if I were shooting run and gun documentary style footage I would choose this camera over the 5D.

This camera wins overall with image quality and amazing skin tones so I use workarounds and put up with the CONS for now until DSLRs evolve a bit more.

I like the 5d much better but I figure the panny is easier to shoot with because its a video camera as a opposed to a dslr that shoots video.

i don't like what the makeup artist did to Rylie in the 5D video, the rouge on her cheeks looks bad.

look at FTVGirls and X-Art to see how makeup should be used with young models.

I tried a new girl makeup artist that day since my regular girl Renee wasn't available. Makeup artists can make or break a girl. Her hair wasnt great either.

I was hoping you'd chime in, because my next question is:

How does it compare to the GH2 and then how about 5D to GH2?

Seems the GH2 is gaining some popularity due to the hacked firmware and expanded features it gets from it.

Also, I don't shoot porn...if that makes any difference to your answer.

I just got my FS100 and would like something to possibly replace my 60D in the near future, for use as a backup.

The 5D rocks and I use it for indie projects and music videos, but for porn I like the Canon XF305. Got to love the 422 color it puts out.

Many tools out there, just need to use the right tool for the right job.

we are quite happy with the Sony NEX FS100 so far, we now got 2 of them

the advantage of the AF100 is that you can switch between PAL and NTSC (probably something most of you dont care about anyways)

A Sony EX-1 is my main HD video camera of choice. But I did some hardcore shoots for a cool next project this weekend with a Canon 5DM2 for the first time and I was impressed with its abilities and the film-like look I was able to get out of it using only very natural room lighting. I am definitely going to be using it more soon!

hehehe yes I must have been one of the first pornographers shooting video with DSLR. I saw a 5D sample on the web and was hooked immediately, I started with the GH1 about 2 years ago.

Comparisment between 5D and GH2:

Most important, image: colors of the 5D tend to be better but the 5D also has a moire problem, moire is hardly present in GH2 footage. You'll see a lot of moire when doing close ups of nylon stockings, which is problematic if you shoot fetish porn

Advantage of the 5D: you can work with top quality Canon lenses and still have auto focus etc. You can put ANY lens on the GH2 using adapters but you won't always have auto focus and electronic control of aperture then.

Apart from that, for me the 5D only has disasvantages: it's bigger and heavier than the GH2. If you work with a handheld rig with light and LCD screen, weight is an issue. I've been sweating like a pig holding the 5D last summer in mid France, it was so fucking hot and that thing was so heavy.. on top of that:

5D overheating problem. It gets very hot.

12 minute clip duration limit. The USA version of the GH2 doesn't have a duration limiit, with a 32GB card you can shoot 3 hour clips or longer (if you power camera from mains adapter)

The hacking of the GH2 is a great advantage too.

The video on the top of this site was shot with two GH2s, the videos below that with GH2 or GH1 and 5D. I'm happy with this content, it sells well, I like the image quality and will never shoot with ordinary videocams again, the only thing I would like to improve is the color correction, I'm studying on that right going through thick books and it's not easy. My respect for professional film graders grows by the day lol. This image is actually a frame grab from a 5D videoclip and imo it looks like a still photo:

Compare the skin tones. For me the 5D is a winner, skin tone of GH2 is green/pale. Now this was also my problem with the AF100. I hope I will be able to correct skin tone of the GH2 properly using color correction in post soon otherwise I'll seriously consider getting that new Canon DSLR movie cam.

Will post two overcranked slow motion samples of the AF100 tomorrow, both will have pissing as well so if your virgin eyes can't cope with that, don't watch those videos. But trust me, girls pissing on each other's faces looks awesome in slow motion, I had to stop watching it due to all the blisters I got on my left hand and cock

OOPS.... I forgot to answer how GH2 compares to AF100: IMO hardly any difference, only the GH2 looks a bit sharper to me. Since the GH2 is much cheaper, the decision to sell the AF100 again was quickly made. Also MaDalton mentioned switching between PAL and NTSC: I was always shooting in NTSC here in PAL country, because the filmmode of the GH2 is 24fps only and I was using the GH2 as B-cam at that time so had to keep things in sync. Also when shooting in NTSC mode you can overcrank from 24 to 60fps (factor 2.5), in PAL you can only overcrank from 25 to 50fps (factor 2).

Another disadvantage of the AF100 I forgot to cover is the ugly electronic noise. Basically THAT was my main reason for selling it again. The GH2 doesn't have that kind of electronic noise at all, the noise you see in higher ISOs merely looks like film grain. Did they ever fix that electronic noise problem in the AF100? I remember how owners of the AF100 tried hard to pretend the noise doesn't exist and anybody who saw the noise and started about it in the camera forums almost got crucified

I am thinking about the GH2 for stuff that I dont need cray depth of field. Seem like it would be easier to focus and I wouldn't have to worry about that 12 min limit anymore.

Audio on the GH2 is great, you can adjust it manually and BeachTek and JuicedLink have XLR adapters/pre-amps and headphone jack that work great with the GH2, I use a BeachTek, it provides with very sensitive input so you register all the details. Some would recommend using audio recorders like the Zoom and Tascam but their pre-amps aren't sensitive enough.

I hear you, in the beginning I came home with a lot of out of focus shots, even with the GH1. The GH2 has the crop sensor function which converts pixels one on one so you don't lose any sharpness, but you work with a smaller sensor that way, so your focal length increases (wide angle becomes less wide) and your depth of field increases too (so the focussed area gets wider). The handheld cam I use in cropped mode most of the time because I'm close to the models where DOF normally only gets tighter. Also when switching from/to cropped mode you basically get two focal lengths on a prime lens. The downsize is that you have to stop recording when changing the sensor mode. I hope they fix this in the GH3.

Search for the GH2 on both Amazon and eBay, you'll find some very good deals and you will never regret it.

If the image quality is better than the cams that are on the market now, it will be worth the investment. You write it off in 5 years. Your clients are going to appreciate the image quality so you will see better sales. Then on the days you don't use it you rent it out.

Of course it's difficult to make an investment in uncertain times like these but if this cam provides with a perfect image I might buy it next year. I'm still considering getting the Arri Alexa as well. It's 4 times as expensive as the Canon but apparently the image quality of this new Canon compares to that of the Alexa. So I'm going to wait till the first end users samples and reviews pop up on the web. I can't be bothered watching vendors samples.
