went to the bank today... and wanted to deposite some checks

Went to the bank today to sign some papers. My account manager wasn't there, so some new lady helped me. After taking care of the paperwork, I told her I also had a couple of checks I wanted to deposit. Her first reaction:

"I didn't know people still used those."

Are you in the U.S.? If so that's a bizarre statement from a bank teller even now in early 2011 where other forms of payment are finally starting to come into more widespread use. Paper checks are still so widely used by every strata of society & business.

By the way, I usually just use the ATM to make my check deposits nowadays. I see so many posts on GFY where people start writing about their negative or at least weird interactions with bank employees usually due to the nature of their business. No need to go inside and talk to any nosy tellers nowadays just to make a simple deposit!

I have the opposite problem.

I went in to send a wire to a designer in Romania. The bank teller looked into my account and then called a manager. He looked at my account for 60 very long seconds and then said, "Mr. [name], do you personally know the person you are sending this wire too? I ask because you seem to receive a lot of wires and often what happens is these Romanians will send you wires that get canceled and your wire goes through. They basically screw you."

I tried telling him I work online and while I am sure what he says happens, happens, my situation is unique. He came out and took me to his desk to explain it again as if I was in denial...

Not in the USA, Western-EU. And it's one of the 4 largest banks in Europe

As far as I know wires can't be canceled, but EFT's can. That's why it's always better to pay the wire fee instead of opting for the cheaper EFT when you request a payout from certain programs.

Checks

Called me old fashioned, but I'm closing my personal & Biz accounts at a bank that just got bought out. 45 minutes on the phone for customer service? nearest bank is too far away. I can't ever access my accounts online. Mail me cash by registered mail.

My lame ass bank (TD Canada Trust) won't let you deposit US checks using the ATM. So frustrating wasting time standing in line.

i like how he explained it again. That is actually a pretty good job on the banks part catching "it". It shows you the scam works.

My credit Union is open 7 days a week, my accounts are free, pays me dividends, and the tellers love when I deposit "adult" checks.

did you actually tried to deposit it into CAD account? Usually they just adjust the rate and you're good to go

Open a US account.

I've been dealing with TD Canada Trust since 1998 (just TD Bank back then - at least for a couple of months...) and I know pretty well everyone in my branch. I rarely have a problem, and the people that work there go out of their way to help me.

When I deposit cheques, I line up for a teller - the lines are short enough - and I get "face time" with the employees. We chat, we joke around, and the people at my branch now know me by name. Personal relationships and recognition makes a big difference if you're not huge player.

Its not hard work going to the bank once a week and shooting the shit.

CIBC has US dollar bank machines that will dispense both CAD and USD funds. You'll notice either one or two flags at the top of the machine, if there's a US flag then it will give out US cash. I can withdraw straight from my US$ account using one of those machines. Maybe they will also let you deposit, but not sure.

yes, that shit is getting ridiculous as well, then they take the tax off the top and then you wait a week or so to get the money, if you're lucky

I get that every single time, at the same bank. Always the same reactions, sometimes they even need to call in help to get it all administrated.

Last time they gave me these prefilled papers so i could write 30 on one thingie and still they made fuzz about it.

My bank recently increased the price to cash a check, it now costs $30 per time you cash checks (be it 1 or 100).

They said no one uses checks anymore and that's why it's gotten so expensive to cash it.

totally agreed. i was going to my hometown branch since i was 12, so they all knew me. then i moved to ottawa. they wanted to hold my checks, blah blah but once they seen me coming in every week with US checks that have no issue, they were more than happy to do it for me. i just keep going to the same branch and see the same people.

Go to another bank, tell them you'll move all of your accounts (both biz and personal) there if they can give you a better price for depositing checks.... take their offer to your bank....

We had a check from a Canadian bank denied, so the funds we had received at first got taken out of our account.
Along with a ?62.24 fee, and this was for an amount of ?156.55.....

On top of that, we are now being told that the Canadian bank wants to charge us another 60 AUD (?44).....
This was a check from LoadedCash, that went over it's 90 days limit, as the bank was processing it.

A bank fee from our bank is one thing, but then the Canadian bank wants to charge 60 AUD as well....wtf??

Loadedcash fixed the denided check quickly, by paying on Paxum instead, but what their bank is charging for this is the first I have ever heard about.
I would think the ?62.24 fee our bank charged, was to cover costs for both them and the other bank.

I've had a US account for years.

And I never said it's "hard" going to the bank. I'd much rather be able to use the ATM to do it.
