Real Gun Crime Stats

So you think guns are the main problem with crime? How about some government stats?

http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=tp&tid=43

In 2009 ?

An offender was armed with a gun, knife, or other object used as a weapon in an estimated 22% of all incidents of violent crime.
Offenders used firearms to commit 8% of violent crime incidents in 2009.
Robberies (47%) were the most likely crime to involve an armed offender.
Firearms (28%) were the most common weapons used in robberies.
Most rapes and assaults did not involve the use of a weapon.
From 1993-1997, of serious nonfatal violent victimization's, 28% were committed with a firearm, 4% were committed with a firearm and resulted in injury, and less than 1% resulted in gunshot wounds.

8% of violent crime incidents?
For 8%, I think we're doing pretty good!

In the UK, the press caught the government lying about the stats about gun crimes

Useless to debate gun control in the U.S. I've officially given up. To many guns already out there, so may as well embrace it and win the arms race

There are 90 guns for every 100 people in America.

Come on people!! Let's make it an even 100/100! Go buy some guns! Yemen is catching up with a promising 60 guns per 100 people. We may be at the bottom in terms of education, but when you are armed to the teeth, who is going to tell you you're wrong about anything? Fuck Yea!

That number is a little misleading though. Here is some stuff taken from a very good political site. He was writing about this recent shooting put up some numbers.

Here is the full articles.
http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes...ontrol-debate/

This graph shows that only about 35% of American households actually have a gun.

What this means that most people don't have guns, but those who do have a lot of them.

I can give you a personal example. If I listed 10 friends that I know that four of them own guns. I personally own 1. Another friend of mine owns 2. But the other two each have about 10 guns each and are talking about buying more.

So you could easily say that out of these 10 people there are 23 guns or 2.3 guns per person when in reality 6 of them have nothing and the other two clearly have small penises.

Oh, ONLY 35% of households have guns? God, I feel so much safer now. Basically, there is a gun in one out of every three houses in my neighborhood. Great!!! Debate is over.

As opposed to how the original article made it look, which is that there is a gun in 90% of households, yeah, it is big difference.

One thing I do not see in there...is that less than 1% of so called "assault" rifles/weapons are used in the commission of a crime.

Civil war if that happens. Prohibition was a fiasco, but an all out repeal of the 2nd amendment would throw this country into chaos. I'd probably just build a bunker somewhere and wait it out lol.

its not the gun, its the crazy fuck with the gun people are afraid of, wish u had the break down of how many of those were legally owned, i bet the numbers fall even more. if the gov makes it harder for responsible citizens to get guns, the criminals will still have them anyways not like they are gonna follow the law to commit a crime lol

both the 'nuge's' examples and yours are ludicrous and unrealistic... He actually suggested that that mother driving her daughter to soccer practice should have been armed??? What a fucking lunatic... Incidents like that are about as common as people getting killed by meteorites so that one is out the window...

Manson? he's not getting out, not ever, how is that a liberal issue?

How about this instead.. You believe you should have the right to own a fire arm and have the ability to use it when necessary and that nobody should take that right away from you. I can agree with that.. makes sense to me.. doesn't sound like a crazy person with impossible scenarios... doesn't sound like paranoia..

The judge hat sentenced Manson was a liberal, should have got the death penalty. He can't be turned back into society.

As for the soccer mom, why not? My mom has a carry permit.

According to FBI data, however, each year about 26 homicides by strangers involved automobile theft.

Um.... wrong.

A few facts for you about Manson's sentencing:

* The judge who sentenced Manson was Judge Charles Older, and he was not what most people would term a "liberal," IMO. He was appointed to the bench by Ronald Reagan in 1967; that fact alone doesn't make him a "conservative" either, of course.... perhaps Reagan just thought Older was a good jurist who deserved a spot on the L.A. Superior Court bench, and it wasn't about his politics? Always a possibility.

* Contrary to your assertion, Judge Older DID sentence Manson (and the rest of his co-defendants) to death, in April of 1971

* The California Supreme Court -- NOT an individual judge -- effectively forestalled the possibility of the death penalty being applied in Manson's case by way of its decision in California v. Anderson; the court's ruling in Anderson outlawed the death penalty in California, making it rather difficult for the state to legally carry out the death sentence against Manson and his co-defendants.

None of this has anything to do with guns/gun crime, of course... just thought I'd straighten the factual record of Manson's sentencing out a bit here. ;-)

I think we need to go back to the old west days where you carried your gun in your holster so everyone knew what you were packing and fights could be settled with a draw. Maybe we could bring back public hangings too.

There is no realistic background check for potential (and current) gun owners. Oh, they check their criminal record, but no their medical record. No one checks to see if there is any history of depression, if they are on any medication, or anything.

This kid in Arizona believed he was living in a daydream. Somewhere along the line this should have been a major issue and prevented him from owning a firearm. I mean, seriously, he's keeping fucking day dream journals.

My best friend has "water on the brain", and a dozen brain operations. Vendzilla, you've met my friend John. He's forty-six now, is physically handicapped, mentally handicapped (he operates as a sixteen year old), and has doctor prescribed heroin lollipops to deal with the pain of his "scar tissue" in his head. (I'm not making this up.) He is legally prescribed heroin, yet no one questioned him about this when he purchased his AR15 six months ago.

I honestly believe that 99% of gun owners are very responsible. It's that one percent that slips though. And all of those people with hand guns.... Where they fuck are they when this shit goes down?

You should read up on basic history before making false statements like that. Even I know what you said is false and I wasn't even alive yet during the Manson trial.

Unless I am mistaken there is a check to see if you have been in a mental institution...but unless I am mistaken these records only go back seven years. As for the shooter he apparently had never been treated for mental illness let alone having been institutionalized.

In his case it is my understanding that the college and the campus police did not communicate with the city police or the Sheriff's office...their concerns about this guy...and agency to agency communication should be mandatory. Though I doubt this would have prevented the guy from purchasing a gun or the shooting.
