Um.... wrong.

A few facts for you about Manson's sentencing:

* The judge who sentenced Manson was Judge Charles Older, and he was not what most people would term a "liberal," IMO. He was appointed to the bench by Ronald Reagan in 1967; that fact alone doesn't make him a "conservative" either, of course.... perhaps Reagan just thought Older was a good jurist who deserved a spot on the L.A. Superior Court bench, and it wasn't about his politics? Always a possibility.

* Contrary to your assertion, Judge Older DID sentence Manson (and the rest of his co-defendants) to death, in April of 1971

* The California Supreme Court -- NOT an individual judge -- effectively forestalled the possibility of the death penalty being applied in Manson's case by way of its decision in California v. Anderson; the court's ruling in Anderson outlawed the death penalty in California, making it rather difficult for the state to legally carry out the death sentence against Manson and his co-defendants.

None of this has anything to do with guns/gun crime, of course... just thought I'd straighten the factual record of Manson's sentencing out a bit here. ;-)
