![]() I'm going to be purchasing a new one this week... I don't game or edit movies, so I don't think I need something too high end.
I just need a nice, reliable set-up... and dual monitors. So if you know who makes good monitors, pass that info along too... please. Thanks GFY! ![]() |

I have an apple desktop and won't ever waste my money on another one. You can build you own hackintosh with the same exact parts for 1/3 the price.

Jayvis - im not sure about the dual monitor support but im sure someone here can answer this for us ... what about a mac mini bro?
When you switch over to apple you really have alot less worries - no real worries about catching new spyware or virus that is floating around that auto installs because of windows ive had an imac for years - never had to take it in ..only thing i really do is run a a program called CleanMyMac about once a week ![]()

"To customers, I tell them to buy HP all day. Know why? They will be in here after 3 months every month like clock work giving me business. To friends, I tell them to stay away from those poorly assembled piles of crap." not exactly verbatim, but fairly close. I run an HP desktop(with a few mods from the factory build) and it's great.. but it's a high-end guy. However, I will probably have to upgrade it/replace it soon. My last laptop, an HP, died after a year. Jay, I'd say build your own. Price will be about the same and you won't have worry about poor build quality. |

I would purchase more iMacs...guess its only fair that I mention that. But I don't think they do multiple monitors, though I've nevr tried.

Does anyone have that link to the page that lets you download a ton of necessary programs for new installations on computers?
You get Chrome, Skype, and a bunch of other stuff all with one download... anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm gonna need that. *Edit* - Thanks Trev, I know a GFY'er that has a long history working for HP... I've heard similar things from him. *Further edit* - He wasn't some part timer just selling HPs btw, he was pretty high up. lol |

2 desktops both HP and the only thing that ever went out on 1 of them was a power supply which was like $25-$35 at the local shop. I hear bad things about HP but I never experienced them and my shits on at least 6-12 hours a day. I'm due for a new one soon so I will probably go HP or Dell.

my HP laptop has been fantastic for me, taken all kinds of abuse travelling everywhere, dropped many times, covered in dust, used 18 hours a day, and it still works great, I've used it so much the keys are all worn and it keeps on performing, I'm getting HP again for sure

It so easy to say that, but building your own system right on the first try is something that's cultivated over years of experience.

I have bought a few HP Business class SFF desktops now ... they are extremely well built and reliable (like DELL servers), and have a proprietary air cooling channel that draws heat from the internals and channels it out one side of the case ...
Cooler components are quicker components ... and Dual Channel Memory rocks too! ![]() ![]() All I really do to them, is add a bit more RAM, and swap out the floppy drive for a 35-in-1 card reader. ![]() All of my work rigs are now HP business class desktops, except for one IBM that has a pair of Matrox G450 cards in it for a dedicated video rendering box. |

I have two Dell Inspiron laptops and I just leave them lying around for guests to play with when they come over. They come loaded with too much crap for my liking and the bloatware grows rapidly. Its easier to get a machine without all of that crap pre-installed than it is to remove it from these damned things.
There's a shop up the street from me that builds my desktops and I've never had a problem with them. I'd recommend either building your own, or develop a relationship with a local store. They'll work harder for your business than Best Buy ever will. |

That's one thing I've noticed about Mac people. They brag about how their Mac has lasted so many years, not even thinking about the fact that their hardware is outdated. Computer tech and system speeds are increasing so fast, who keeps a computer for more than year -- two at the most?

For just "nice reliable setup, not too high end", I'd probably recommend Dell.
I myself however will probably spend the bit extra and get a custom built one at CyberPowerPC. If you do the research part by part you can figure out what needs quality part and what doesn't and end up with a nice fast computer that should be fast and last a really long time from the looks of it. I currently have an HP laptop and it's serviceable though. I have no beef with HP computers...the ones I've had have worked fine.

if you are not sure how, get a friend to help you out...

Probably Apple but you don't want a Mac. Trust me. It's a cult and it's not supported by too many software or hardware makers :-)
Go for Lenovo - that's still the best one the money can buy. |

If you want old technology that is overstuff with useless software and underpowered just to make it seem like a better deal, go with ANY pc from any retailer.
If you want real value for your money, go for an Apple iMac. If you must go with a PC, forget the brand names. Go OEM and custom order the machine you want. (ie: Fast CPU, lots of Ram, super-fast hard disk), and then finally Windows ONLY, without all the extra's and add-ons and other resource hogging shit you get with a Dell or HP. You'll save money and have a fast machine to boot.

Can anyone tell me their opinion on these two:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+Ess... 9145400050005 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+Ess... 9145400050006 I'm not going to build my own, this is one of the few desktop BB sells that isn't bloated with shit, my laptop by Asus runs like a champ and has for well over a year now, I've probably only turned it off a handful of times. I don't know much about processors though, if anyone has some advice, let me know ![]() |

Apple. The upfront cost is more, but the long term cost is much less. Haters don't like their control over all the system, but i does make for a more stable system with less fragmentation.

"Long term" --- that's where you f'd up. You can't equate any kind of value in computing products with long term. Technology is moving to fast to have an expensive computer for years.
