For just "nice reliable setup, not too high end", I'd probably recommend Dell.
I myself however will probably spend the bit extra and get a custom built one at CyberPowerPC. If you do the research part by part you can figure out what needs quality part and what doesn't and end up with a nice fast computer that should be fast and last a really long time from the looks of it.
I currently have an HP laptop and it's serviceable though. I have no beef with HP computers...the ones I've had have worked fine.
