Designers: question

Ok, I've been talking to someone who really would be better off just hireing a designer instead of doing it themselves. A few questions:

Do the designers give the client the psd files for the logo (to be used as watermark, etc), the pages, or anything? Or does the client only get the jpg slices as a finished result? And do the designers make everything active (hotspots, links, etc) or do they just make the prettiness and let the other person do the coding?

They may sound like odd questions, but I'm trying to find out if a person I've talked to is on the level or not.

In short, is $500 fair for just the pretty backgrounds in jpg form? He's done 6 pages, but they are essentially the same background with a single photo changed for each page. Because this is what her current designer has given her, and he's being difficult on top of everything.

sigh.

"psd" - Yes, always.

"make everything active" - If its not 5 million links, sure ... no probs.

client usually gets all formats of work: psd's and slices

you've paid for the work, so you get all formats in case you ever need to make changes... just jpg is useless.. specially for a logo, cuz you're always resizing the logo for different things

designer should give you the finished product, with all links working and going to the right pages

not sure if you're getting what you've paid for.. i'd have to see it

Oh, I didn't mention that he works in Corel Draw so he doesn't have psd's. He has whatever that program makes. He's actually been sending her proofs in pdf format.

Elli,

You should always get the psd's and all files when the project is completed.

We have done that since day 1 and also we keep a dvd back for every single design / project. Whether it's 1 banner or 50 paysites.

sometimes we don't give psds to clients co's the clients themselves doesnt ask.
actually i think its fair if you have atleast make a deal for this amount of money with all the files that the client would need after the work like psds, html, jpegs and stuff.

That was my reaction, too.

The conversation kinda went like this:

girl: I need a site designed.
guy: I can do that. I've done cool shit before. (Shows cool shit to girl).
girl: yeah, that's what I need. How much?
guy: $500 but I can't rush because I'm in the middle of moving.
girl: k, cool. (Pays guy).
later...
guy: can you host it on netfirms? They have this sitebuilder software that I can teach you to use to maintain your site.
girl: no.
later...
guy: those pictures are too dark. I've redone everything with pictures I've chosen.
girl: Ok, you need to change this, this, and this. And I need the psd's and that logo I gave you an extra $100 for.
guy: I don't have psd's. This is the font I used so you can change it later. I can't finish it now, so you'll have to put in the text and buttons yourself.
girl: ummm....?
guy: ok actually all I can do are the backgrounds. You know someone who can help you build the rest, right?
girl: wtf?

And that's when I came to you, GFY.

They're not mine to show, but I can say they would make some kickass wallpapers if they were the right dimensions. But 6 wallpapers do not a site make.

He's not an adult designer, so you can all chillax. He designs sites for a few bands and other mainstream stuff. Next time I know who to send her to

Ok, the ongoing saga goes on:

from girl to designer:
Hey,

The backgrounds you made look good and they will work. I am wondering what you are doing to build the site as far as the buttons, the logo and the
layout go. It looks good so far but there isn't really anything there right
now. You said you were doing the layout so I still need some more things
there. Some of those things are, an area for the text ready for me to drop
it in, buttons being ready to be linked up, blank areas for me to drop
thumbnails into, a menu or button bar that can be duplicated for every
page.... navigation done. Everything looks cool so far but I just need to
know what you are going to do with them.

Talk to you soon,
X

********
designer in reply:

The buttons and text are your job, remember? I sent you the link for the
font and a template [which was the LAYOUT] on how it should be laid out a
while back. You take the font I sent you and use it to type in all your
pagelinks down the side. Then build each page accordingly. The pink areas on
the verticals I sent you are where you drop in your text and pictures
overtop. You need to build the buttons in your program so they rollover and
stuff. I gave you all the bases so you have the option to make them whatever you want and that way when you add a page it's easier on your end. I'm not building the entire site since I don't know the program you're using... I was just giving you the backgrounds for you to use for each page and a LAYOUT look so you can recreate it in your program as a guide.

Here's the link again to the font:
http://www.dafont.com/labtop.font

***********

So we now have 6 pretty backgrounds for $400. She does like them so far, but doesn't think that was worth the whole sum. Oh, and he did fork over some psd's finally. Any idea how much that would be worth in a fair world?

Most designers do give the PSDs.
Depends on who you hire.

See, that's what I thought, too. She's basically wanting to ask for some money back, then give what he's done so far to a real designer to finish.

I so want to comment but I can not think of anything helpful to say.

I figure any chance of a refund will be more difficult than getting this design even done.

Typically when I design stuff for others they get the following.
Pre-sliced ready to go pages with basic linking intact (no special link codes, last thing I want is to screw that up and have some wrong tracking id or something).
PSD files handed over with final payment.
25-50-25 payment method. 25% down, 50% at review last tweak stages, 25% at turn over with psd files.
Minor tweaks and adjustments thrown in for after the fact, usually free.
Very quick turn around since I understand what time means and I never double book etc.

Well thank you.

I am open starting friday, typical turn around is a week max depending on what all is requested and number of tweaks.

She would be in good hands with BlueWire as well, great company from what I have seen.

Thank you for the kind words; we could probably find a spot for her next week. We currently have a 19 person team ready to accomodate
