Google/Other SE's and Domain Names

Some thoughts:

In order for other top-level domain names to become more valuable and start being utilized I think it will be important and critical for search engines to start adding some sort of metric in their algorithms to rank sites higher based on their top-level domain extension. For example:

1) domains with a .tv extension would get a bonus in rankings for search terms related to TV, entertainment, celebrities, etc....

2) domains with a .biz extension would get a bonus in rankings for search terms related to business stuff

3) domains with a .mobi extension would get a bonus in rankings for search terms related to mobile devices...

Currently, it seems like that .com is the favored domain by the world and by the search engines when ranking sites. If search engines would rank sites the way I have explained it, I feel that other top level domains would beginning to start to be utilized more. It would also make the searches more relevant because the correct type of businesses would be building their sites on the correct domain extensions, instead of just the more popular .com and .net extensions...

i know i'm probably not the first one to have this idea and maybe some search engines are doing this already..but i haven't seen it yet....and since i'm bored, i decided to type something useful instead of the usual "would you hit it" or "hot babe pic" threads...

well if google and other SE's change up their algorithm to give the bonus to .tv imagine what would happened after that?

Large news and tv corporations would start buying or moving their websites to .tv making the .tv domain more relevant instead of being used as a spam top level domain for mostly porn sites...in addition because the larger corporations will start buying up the .tv domains, the prices for .tv domains will go up....

this becomes true with all other top-level domains...

Exactly. And you may as well say that of .tv, .biz, etc. Their existence as available TLDs means nothing. Why should the spider think a site on .tv is better for a "tv" related query than a site on a .com, unless there is some prior concensus to put such information there --

your missing the point of the thread...i guarantee if Google and other SE's valued and ranked domains with a .tv higher for search terms related to entertainment or TV we would begin to see CBS, NBC, ABC, and other entertainment TV coporations start utilizing the .tv extension

the SE's need to do to start fixing the problem your explaining in your comments above by doing this.

i'm thinking proactively of how the SE's could fix the problems your explaining above in your comment....

your mindset is thinking reactively in your comments

I know what your point is. But, it's like any theoretical premise that essentially reads "If we made things better, would things be better?" -- or, in this case more specifically, if we created a meaningful distinction for the search engines would they work better? Of course they would. What's interesting is that you are making a powerful argument in favor of XXX, and probably don't even realize it yet.

yes the .xxx example did come up in my mind...that was the next way how i was going to explain what i was trying to get across if people still didnt understand... here's what i was gonna say:

to put it in "porn" terms, if Google gave a bonus to sites with a .xxx extension when searches are done relating to adult/porn terms then most people in this business would start buying up .xxx just like any other industry would want to start using their primary top level domain for their type of business...i know most don't like what i'm saying, but you have to agree that it would make searches and results more relevant....

This would only open the door for more abuse.

By the way, .tv is not a top level domain. It's a country level domain for a small island.

open the doors for more abuse? please explain? i haven't been able to think of one downside to the SE's doing this? other than the one about the .xxx if it ever becomes reality.

i was just using it as example...and Tuvali did sell the rights to start promoting .tv as a entertainment domain awhile ago.

So, myfuckingsailboat.xxx should get better rankings than thehun.com / .net for adult terms?

No, you miss my point:

The domains / tld's used are only examples.

If I could buy some .xxx like myfuckingsailboat.xxx and get a better ranking for adult terms than a well known adult site on a .com only because of the .xxx, I would abuse the algo and it would not help the search engines in their struggle for more relevant search results.

you would abuse the algo how? by buying up .xxx top level domains right? where porn should be located at....again i know people dont like this scenario.

so lets say cell phone sites want to be ranked high..if Google and SE's gave better rankings for sites on .mobi for cell phone terms the people would try to abuse the algo by doing what? putting their cell phone/ringtone/etc.. sites on the .mobi domain instead of .net, .gov, .org

now the cell phone sites are on the relevant and correct domain because they wanted to abuse the algo right? everything becomes more relevant. thats my point. Google and the SE's should be happy that people are trying to abuse the algo in this way because in the end everything is going in the correct top-level domains....

Your thread started about tld's, but now you are talking about content.

If you put relevant content on a relevant domain with a relevant tld everything is ok. But your suggestion was not about content.

It gets abuse when I put non relevant content on a domain and get better ranking only because of the relevancy of the tld.
I.e. I put some crap content on ilovecartoonsandsuch.tv and according to your suggestion I should get better ranking than disney.com for entertainment related searches only because my site happens to be on a .tv.

Comments: In your example below, your not putting non-relevant content on the domain. Ilovecartoonsandsuch.tv is relevant content to the .tv domain. In addition, I said give a bonus to ranking for placing the right content on the right domain, no be the sole decider of the ranking. Your examples aren't putting into account all the other factors in an algo that decide a sites ranking.

I.e. I put some crap content on ilovecartoonsandsuch.tv and according to your suggestion I should get better ranking than disney.com for entertainment related searches only because my site happens to be on a .tv.
see comments..
