Who 'gets' the rock band RUSH?

It's amazing how many members who sign up for my paysites either have a RUSH inspired email address or username. There's like a huge cult of 35-60 year old male RUSH fans. I never 'got' RUSH and still don't. You?

Their music is awe-inspiring but it's one of those "you get it" or you don't type of things as, you've noticed.

I hate the singing.. but the music is spot-on.

Oh yes indeed I "get" Rush! In fact, I interviewed Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson way back in the day (they even have the cover of the mag I wrote it for on their website, hint).

Rush has like 3-4 "phases". My fave is the Seventies Rush. "2112" is the big record from that era (for me) but basically anything they did between '74-'82 is their 'Golden Era".

After that they got into keyboards in the '80's/'90's. Then they dropped out for almost a decade while drummer Neil Peart dealt with the death of his wife and daughter (I think - lost touch with Rush around this time). Now they are back and still rocking it.

Fuck man, just crank 'Limelight', "Tom Sawyer' and "The Necromancer" (or "Xanadu") and you'll get it. :D

I never used to get them either, even though as a semi professional musician I should. Recently though I started collecting vintage vinyl records and a lot of Rush records seem to show up at garage sales and thrift stores. Listening to them on vinyl made a huge difference for me and theirs are now some of my favorite records.

I never liked them when they were popular. Forgetting about the music, the lead singers voice is so distinctive and high pitched that it's either pleasing or grating leaving very little room to be in between. I used to like Tom Sawyer, but that's about it. However, being that they are Bubbles' favorite band, I'd give them a second chance.

Music is such a quirky thing - people say they like things or believe they like it but it can be for many multitudes of reasons that have little or nothing to do with the music... Whether they love the lyrics, whether they saw them live, or because they like the show they put on as good performers, or they like the music or the lead guitar or whether or not it's just a statement of identity or simply because people tend to favor and like what what is popular among peers, even if it's not good and so on.

All their songs sound the same.. It's same way with ACDC.. If you've heard one of their songs you've heard them all..

I don't get Rush. I find the singer's voice annoying and their style just doesn't appeal to me. I'll take Tragically Hip over Rush any day.

2112 was about the time I picked up on Rush. I was a big Kiss fan back in the day and Rush was touring with them.

One day in High School i picked up my book and read a poem. Wow I thought. Rush actually got some of their lyrics from this poem. The poem is Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15831

Not really sure how I felt about them then and wondered how much more of their stuff was just gotten from previous works.

A friend of mine has a theory that I must have been sodomized at a Rush concert and am regressing the memory which is why I don't like them.

From a musical standpoint I get it. They are very talented, but Geddy Lee's voice grates on my nerves which is the funniest part of this because I have a history of loving singers without great voices. I love Dylan and worship at the alter of Tom Waits, but for some reason both Geddy Lee and Robert Plant annoy me.

Yeah they mix (and remaster) CDs too "hot" these days in a desperate attempt to maintain market share. They 'red line' CDs now, making them VERY LOUD (theoretically so they will be heard over the other music/competition) and it's horrible. Everything cracks and pops at that level. The latest ZZ Top CD is so LOUD even when it's turned down the bass makes my teeth vibrate. It's too much.

That's why vinyl is being re-discovered. It's 'warm' and inviting and not as harsh by comparison. Plus the records sound like you remember them. With Remasters you hear too much detail and it ruins the Pavlovian effect of hearing the same exact music you heard as a kid. Sucks balls.

Yes which is why AC/DC (and Rush) are great. You know what you're getting every time. Like The Stones, too. (I would argue tho that Rush has a much wider range of sounds, especially when they started adding too many keyboards in the '80's.)

Maybe true for ACDC. But for Rush nothing could be further from the truth. As a band they evolved their music and changed their sound through time. Different people like their different periods to varying degrees.

That's because Neil Peart wrote all of the lyrics and he was a major bookworm. Much of the stuff he wrote was influenced by and/or borrowed from many of the books he read.

Been a Rush fan since the very earliest days. Bought all their vinyl back then.

Neil Peart is from just up the road - Port Dalhousie.

Port Dalhousie was also his inspiration to write 'Lakeside Park' (the park still exists, although its glory days are long gone)

I saw rush live in Tinley park in Chicago, August, 2007.

They like to close with YYZ Something you only get if you are a RUSH fan, one of my favorite instrumentals.

I saw them on the Power Windows tour, but that wasn't their finest hour and they are more of a listen late at night band than a stadium band.

2112, Signals, Exit...Stage Left -- all albums I could probably replay note for note in my head without ever hearing again, I've listened to them so much.

I used lyrics from A Farewell to Kings on my posters when I ran for class president. (I won.)

The drum solo for YYZ on Exit Stage Left is still my favorite Peart solo.

I did, saxophone, but after college rarely played, it's not an instrument to be played alone - you can but i didn't enjoy it. I sold my saxophones, an alto and soprano, Selmers, and bought my first computer with some of the money.

I was more of a Zeppelin/Journey dude but Rush has a good handful of tunes I dig. Old buddy of mine was a die hard fan and one of my ex gfs dad used to smoke up and blast the neighborhood to the shit.

I would say Rush is less about being dulcet as it's about musicianship- especially the odd time signatures. It blows me away, still, after 30 years of listening to them. I still air guitar, air drum, every little nuance; especially when it's playing around people I grew up with. There is just something trans-mundane about Rush. You either get it, or you don't.

Rush is one of those bands that just hits a spot in people who like their music with musicianship and intelligence.
I've never met a guitar player, bass player or drummer who didn't like Rush. (Even Jazz guys)
Lastly.... It's just 3 guys who make a wall of sound that sounds like 5 or 6 guys playing.

Read Neil's books! My favorite is "Travelling Music." Not much of a follower of their music, I've seen them and have owned a few albums but was always just a casual fan. The movie gave me a bit more of an appreciation.

See? Look how passionate people(males) are about that band. And almost every guy in this thread is over 40.

Is RUSH in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

^^ I'm 23... and yeah, I think they were inducted last year or will be inducted. I remember there was a bit of fuss about it considering how long it took them compared to other bands/artists.

I dont get Rush.
I dont get Pink Floyd.
I dont get Led Zeppelin.
I dont get Lynard Skynard.

Regardless of how awesome their level of musical genius is, it doesnt mean you'll like them.
