Yeah they mix (and remaster) CDs too "hot" these days in a desperate attempt to maintain market share. They 'red line' CDs now, making them VERY LOUD (theoretically so they will be heard over the other music/competition) and it's horrible. Everything cracks and pops at that level. The latest ZZ Top CD is so LOUD even when it's turned down the bass makes my teeth vibrate. It's too much.

That's why vinyl is being re-discovered. It's 'warm' and inviting and not as harsh by comparison. Plus the records sound like you remember them. With Remasters you hear too much detail and it ruins the Pavlovian effect of hearing the same exact music you heard as a kid. Sucks balls.

Yes which is why AC/DC (and Rush) are great. You know what you're getting every time. Like The Stones, too. (I would argue tho that Rush has a much wider range of sounds, especially when they started adding too many keyboards in the '80's.)
