What size of videos for streaming in members area should I use? I am going to use MP4 but not sure of the size.

The biggest you can. We have up to 1920x1080.

You have two real options for optimal streaming:

1) Find a middle ground for the one stream you will offer. A video that is not too big so it will play for all of your members regardless of their connection. Just as a reference, if you encode it over 2000kbps, I can't stream it from here I am. Neither can a whole lot of people. That said, you can make a great looking 1280 x 720 video at 1800 - 2000kbps if you encode it right.

2) Load a few different size videos and let your media server choose the video that is correct for your users bandwidth.

Downloading, you can make the file as large as you want. But to stream it in real time with little problems, you need to make sure everyone can do it.

I don't have Wowza and am going to use lighttpd so I think the server can't choose the video optimal for each user. I don't know much about streaming so I'm not sure. What, based on your experience, would be the most popular settings for video encoding for streaming?

That is right, you sure can, because 1/2 of them can stream it.

You should look into offering a lower stream option as well for those of us without blazing net connections (if you don't have it already). It just may help retention.

Of course, we actually have 6 sizes:

[1920 x 1080 at 5900Kbps]
[1280 x 720 at 2600Kbps]
[1024 x 576 at 1700Kbps]
[768 x 432 at 900Kbps]
[512 x 288 at 400Kbps]
[512 x 288 at 200Kbps]

Most of our customers are offering videos in at least 2 sizes so that users that can't stream the really large version can still watch the movies. Most are offering a bigger version at 1280 or larger and a smaller one in the 640 or 720 range. Many are also offering 640 and/or 320 MP4 for iPad and mobile viewing

If you're using a CMS like Elevated X that has automatic video encoding it costs you nothing but a bit more hard drive space on your server to offer multiple sizes.

Well then I'm just going to shut up and go sit in the corner.

Do you have stats on what gets watched the most? With such a large selection for them to choose from, I'm curious what is the most viewed size. For me, I can't stream anything over 2000Kbps without letting it buffer for a long time.

Then 3-4 other sizes, we offer whole video and cut up parts also. WMV & Mpeg. Most people download the 2nd highest quality which is still very good but the highest is very close to it in downloads and the quality is so sweet

Generally, mine are 1920 x 1080 or "older" non HD are 720 x 480 until I re-encode them.
