Aquariophiles - let's see your fish...

Don't believe this has been brought up on GFY before, so let's see your fish for those that keep them....

some of mine:

The glass catfish are my favourite.... and the betta is a great hunter to keep the guppy babies from overrunning the aquarium.

I used to own an aquarium shop in New Zealand.

120 display tanks - It was great!

Had to sell up when I moved back to UK.

I have always wanted to set up a biz selling tropical marines and breeding them myself. It would be a huge money spinner but needs a lot of investment...

Why a huge investment? Better still, genetically modify them (they're pretty much all modified anyway) to bring out the best colours and off you go to early retirement

--edit to genetically modify fish it's really easy: have a tank with a few hundred breeding fish in there, drop in some EMS for a few days (order through sigma.com), then select the progeny that look good/have three eyes, and interbreed. Guaranteed winner.

Yeah, esp with a community tank, you get to know the habits of each fish - the timid ones, the ones that piss off the others when they aren't happy, the placid ones that know when there's trouble....

when I get stuck on something on the computer, I swing the chair around and watch what's happening in there... it takes my mind off what's going on in my world and 30mins-1 hr later I come back to the real world refreshed and the problem gets resolved.

I find peaking into another world very relaxing... voyeurism I guess

Just bought a couple of those (blue gouramis) last night, I don't have any pics handy though. But I have mostly small fish, neon and black neon tetras, orange platties, black swordtails, otto cats, catfish, and big clown loach that is afraid of people.

cool - careful though of the gouramis (colisa they call them here) - they can be quite territorial little buggers. I just have one male cos the shop told be at least 1 male and 3 female (the females being less colourful)....

what they *didn't* tell me was WW3 would break out when I introduced it with the male betta.... fuck that painful to watch! I isolated the betta in a floating isolation tank that he jumped from to attack. So I put a lid on it the next night - following morning the floating tank was at the bottom of the tank with him still inside it...
had to physically separate them into two tanks. When two fish don't get on, shit they don't get on!

I've got a nice 55 gallon with a few in it but I really want a nice reef tank 90 gallon or so.
It's not like I don't have the time to keep it up.

Good luck with the reef tank if you get one!! Sounds like loads of hassle from what I've heard, but certainly makes for more colourful fish and variety (coral etc)

Glass catfish - very timid things - I've only got 3 (pictured) but I need more to bring them out more - they're forever hiding in the plants as there aren't enough of them. Really interesting to watch them eat though. I don't know but I'd say they're blind since they twist and turn to "sense" the food with their feelers but damn, they're efficient at it.

At least put water in it with a bit of ammonia and turn the filter on... a new aquarium takes at least 3 months to cycle. If you don't, the first fish you put in will go titsup at around 4-6 weeks when the nitrites peak
google around at the nitrogen cycle of an aquarium...

Yeah, the bacteria that convert the nitrites into nitrates take a while to install into the filter (after the bacteria that convert the ammonia into nitrites)

You can get around it with 1/3 water changes every week - Just make sure you use dechlorinated water.

Start with a few hardy fish like danios, guppies etc....

You can also get bacteria starters that prime the filter and speed things up.

Haha, my type of thread ;-)

Got into marine fish last year...

Bought a 55 gallon and learned the hard way what not to do...

Anyway I now have a 240 gallon tank being built with overflows, returns, custom 100 gal sump / fuge, etc...

Also turned the 55 and a 20 gallon tank into quarantine tanks.

My 240 should be back in early April, then I'll need to fill it up with RODI salt water and let the new 300 lbs of live rock cure for around 2 months and move all the live stock over.

BTW - Most expensive and frustrating hobby I've every picked up... but still worth it

Right now I have:

Skeletor Moray Eel

Black Ice Clownfish

Ocellaris Clownfish

Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang

Niger Triggerfish

Yellow Tang

Two Neon Gobys

Yellow Tail Damsel

Once the 240 is up I'll be adding:

Crosshatch Triggerfish

Achilles Tang

Also a bunch of little crabs, snails, shrimp etc... they just clean up everything.

What really makes it worth it is all of the crazy coral you can put in the tank... that's where the real money is blown ;)

So I put a lid on it the next night - following morning the floating tank was at the bottom of the tank with him still inside it...
had to physically separate them into two tanks. When two fish don't get on, shit they don't get on!
I was sure I had heard before that male gouramis don't get along with each other, but when I bought them they were all males in the store. I asked if two were ok together and the guy in the store said yes ... they have been fine so far luckily. As far as bettas, I've stopped putting them in my fish tanks because sometimes you get small fish that like to nip and will tear at the betta's fins, plus I would hate to find out the hard way like you did that any of the fish I have are too similar to a betta in the betta's eyes!
