Most of my stuff is done on the fly, if I go through those steps my shot is gone.

I think the difference is that you shoot staged shots so you create the moment of the shoot you want while baddog captures the moment he see in a picture. He can't pick the light, rearrange people, change angles etc. Because people are not there for the purpose of getting their pictures taken

very true but even on unplanned action I do the same thing. I learned this from the wedding/event shooters. you only need a few seconds with some practice

I disagree. When I'm shooting outdoors the most important thing is to figure out your exposure before you start shooting. It takes about 1 second to do, and then you're good for pretty much any outdoor shooting situation excluding when you move into the shade, etc. If the sun moves in back of your subject, just click your shutter wheel two clicks to the left and you're good again. Or flip the power button on your flash and auto-ETTL that shit...

It's not difficult to nail your exposure in any situation 95% of the time.

I agree with BB. Learning to nail exposure consistently is just the basics. Most photographers can pick this up within 1 year of shooting. Baddog has been shooting for a long time now, and I have seen some fairly consistent exposure issues that could be corrected with some minor attention to these details.

I do enjoy looking at your images when you post them on here. I do agree with xenigo that you can set up your cam on manual fairly fast for outdoors and fix the exposure quickly as well as needed. A tiny bit of post would be nice as well, all of the pictures have a film to it straight out of the camera.

I have stated this a million times but I am no pro just someone who loved my camera when I had it. Here are a few personal shots I took outside of my dogs. they aren't the best but an example of manual with a little bit of post. I think the colors on some of these turned out pretty nice. This also goes up with what you said about having to take shots quickly since they are dogs and don't listen to me well at all when its photo time XD.
Forgiv the quality of the pics, I grabbed them from Facebook in Lou of looking around my hard drives for them. These were taken with an old 40d, my first camera a couple months after I got it.

Here is an indoor one with natural lighting


Here is a shot I took with my 40d and a 50mm 1.8 on manual with natural light outside on her wedding day. Again Facebook compressed the shot so quality sucks but you get the gist of what I am saying.


Here is a screenshot of your image with like 2 minutes of post work, just some color changes. I did not take the time to do more advanced stuff like modifying the red in her face, just a quick example.

Thanks, but I can assure you I am not going to take the time to do post production on show photos, I take thousands, I would never get anything done. I do that for pics of special places.

If someone was able to say, change your setting to this and it will make everything better, I would do it in a flash, but when I do events it has to be auto . . . and FYI: I do use my flash outdoors as well as in, with ETTL. I just do not put the flash in people's faces, I prefer to bounce off walls and ceilings.

I suspect when I upgrade cameras, there will a noticeable difference. I think mine has gotten to slow for me. Outgrew it.


*edit: that pic was difficult to do because sun was definitely screwing with me. Trying to avoid the crowds and the angel of the sun can be challenging to say the least. I remember wishing I had my polarizer with me.

Like i said before, I enjoy your photos. I personally don't care how the lighting is etc. I understand its shots of whats going on. Did that really make you angry? I hope t didn't. I think you may have misunderstood a friendly suggestion for being a douche. If so I am sorry. Because of my job I have to do a lot of image manipulation and I also play with raws a lot. I can see like a film on unedited raws a lot of the time, just the color doesn't look as nice as it could etc. Maybe it involves the time I have spent having to do it but I can correct color for pics pretty quickly. I enhanced the color in that pic so you could see that chicks face in literally 3 minutes. Thats why I suggested it. If you had lightroom or bridge, you could accomplish it even faster than fiddling around in Photoshop.

Anyway, this is the second post you mentioned my suggestion so I really hope you didn't take it offensively. I did say I am no pro, I am not able to do what you do, and I like your work so I don't know how much nicer I could have been with my friendly advice.

We're not talking about composition, focus, or even capturing the moment.

What you're saying is that you're lazy, and you don't want to be bothered doing the job correctly. There are many successful event photographers in this world, and I've never once heard a successful photographer say they don't have time to do the job properly. And I guarantee the time you're lacking barely scratches the surface in terms of heavy professional schedules.

I have to squeeze off well over a thousand images in a 4 hour time period. Getting the exposure spot-on really is not optional. If I ever told a client I didn't have time for that, my replacement would be ready to take my place in about 10 seconds.

No, not at all. We have been chuckling whenever thought about it. goodgirl touches up her stuff and got me to start doing it on some stuff when I have time to play. That is not very often.

But yeah, I take thousands of quick shots at a show. I have to go through and make sure I delete the blurry ones and the ones I know people are going to hate of themselves. I don't have time to adjust them. Believe me, my goal is to some day just take the pics and have someone else do all the work. Until then, it is what it is. Come to think of it, the only photos I touch up are for GotBaddog.com or one of the others. If I have a photo from say a London sight that I put on PimpsPromo.com, I might touch it up and put it on GotBaddog.

I would like to see you do that at a show or on a busy street. If you think your studio posed shooting is anything like what people like JFK, Mikeb, me or any event photographer does, you are seriously mistaken. FYI, these newfangled cameras have an auto function. They work most of the time.

The photo that barcodes touched up was taken on a busy street, with the sun directly in her face with a flash unit that I have to take off and on every 10 seconds it seems. The boot sucks. When it doesn't sit right it over exposes. I have deleted more photos for that reason than you can imagine. However, sometimes you have to weigh the overall photo and what it represented. Pretty sure Karen would rather I had not deleted it. I have the original, if I feel so inclined I could touch it up.

I do not even want to do what you do as a photographer. I'd be surprised if you could do what I do with what I have. Just saying.

You don't have to be among the top 3 photographers in the world to have perfect exposure. You might not even have to be among the top 1,000,000 photographers in the world to have perfect exposure.

Anyway, gear malfunctions are one thing... but that wasn't the point of my post. You got a bad piece of gear? Replace it. I've had gear fail a number of times, and you just send the thing in to Canon or Nikon and they send you back a working part in 1 week. Gear failure is guaranteed, that's why you bring 2 bodies... 2 lenses... 2 flashes... a week's worth of batteries, and 4-6 32gb CF cards. As long as you've got redundancy, you're covered.

I do not take the same pic over and over, too much work to go through them all at the end. About 10% is my average for tossed pics. FYI, I don't mind suggestions that are realistic. When it comes to events, it is not realistic to take "a few seconds" to set things up or to "spend a couple minutes in post production." Those pics will be on GotBaddog.

Anyhow, back to the show. The party scene in Barcelona seems to start at 10 PM and last far into the morning. Luckily, coffee is available at 10 and the first events do not start until 11.
