Why do people get praised for losing weight ??

Unless the original weight gain was through health reasons obviously, which is a different story.

But every day there's a story on some stupid celebrity, or just someone in the general public, who used to be a fat ass because they ate like fucking pigs everyday for 10 years, but now lost a lot of that weight, and now weigh basically what most normal sized people weigh in the first place.

Why does that deserve praise ??

This is the latest Z list celeb that seems to be in the papers here all the time now since she lost weight.

She should be ashamed she let herself get into such a mess in the first place...

For the same reason we praise people who stop drinking or doing drugs.

Anyone that notices a problem in their life and fixes it should be praised for recognizing the issue and putting forth the effort to fix it. Whether or not they caused the problem is irrelevant, nobody is perfect. Striving to become a better person is a quality that few people have.

For example, you have a potty mouth (not that I don't LOL.) But your mother might praise you if you corrected it. I know mine would!

I wouldn't praise them either.

I drink, but if i stopped i sure as hell wouldn't be looking for praise for it...

Probably because it's a difficult thing to do. If you stop dieting and exercising you could very easily lose all your progress. People want other people to be healthy. In the case of celebs though, I do see what you mean -- who cares?

Would you tell the bum that laid drunk in the ditch for 10 years that he did a great job after he was
sober for 3 years and had completed tech school to become an electrician?

I would, because it would encourage other bums to get out of the ditch.

Look at the highlighted words/phrases in your post above.
They define a method.

People have basically two methods of controlling other people :

1. Kick them when they are down and this will make them get up

2. Encourage them to get up and congratulate those that do

Number 1 is a "punishment system".
Number 2 is a "reward system".

The words in your post show that you clearly favor the "punishment system" method.

not sure about it being a huge accomplishment... studying for years to get an academic degree, or perhaps training for years in order to complete a marathon under 3:30 is an accomplishment...

getting your shit together for 30 days, by eating healthier, and hitting the gym for 30 mins a day is not...

that being said, nothing wrong with some praise, but lets not act like something huge was accomplished...

A person should be praised for bettering themselves, celebrity or not. It takes a lot of hard work and discipline to change your lifestyle. Granted it's easier for celebrities since they can afford trainers and all that stuff, but still.

Ever tried it? I lost the 100lbs I have lost so far for myself rather than praise from anybody else but I suppose unless you have done that journey you may not understand.

I agree about celebs though.

Ever congratulate someone for quitting smoking? I have. It was stupid of them to start in the first place, smart of them to finally figure out they need to stop.

Same thing here.

nobody is saying here that there aren't different levels of achievement or that they are all the same by any means.

that being said, anyone finishing a marathon should be congratulated.. those things are fucking hard! hehe

I lived there for ages and I don't even recognize that person. Who is it?

It depends on who they are. People like Kerry Katona would sell limbs to stay in the papers. So, I wouldn't doubt it.

Then you have women like Anne Diamond who really just had an average middle aged woman's body who felt bullied and so went and had 'the surgery' but knew that would get her more slack. So, hid it until she couldn't. I understand why she lost weight and I understand why she hid how she did it. Where she went wrong was pretending she did it through just diet and exercise and then trying to sell her plan to other women.

I don't smoke, but it does impress me when people give up smoking (not for a week, month or year), as it seems to be something so difficult to do. I would praise them as it would genuinely impress me that they had the willpower to fix their problem.

It's Jody Gibson, pretty much a nobody but she won Big Brother in the UK a couple of years ago.

Having a personal trainer and a $$$$ contract to bring out a personal fitness DVD of course helps.

Ideally, it's easiest on your body when you don't have a lot a fat or muscle mass. Maintaining a lot of muscle mass is expensive, it requires more sleep (1-2 plus hours) and adds $100+ to your grocery bill a month.

Being fat is costly in many ways. I tend to respect people less that are fat, it says something about who you are and how you take care of yourself.

Fat People should be ashamed!

I don't openly treat fat people any different. It is important to take care of your health.
My sister is severely obese and one of my cousins is actually dangerously obese (400+ pounds). It's extremely hard on a person's body and people should be provoked (if it can be done) to do something about it.

For people that are very large they really just need to start with food reduction as exercise can be too tough initially.

they deserve kudos, regular people i mean, i hate celebs and those who fawn over them - the UK has a disease with its obsession with celebs and celeb wannabes. no country is as obsessed, a national sickness.

dieting and breaking any addiction is tremendously hard, no matter how somebody gets into the state they're in when they overcome their addictions it's a major accomplishment. people make a big fuss over daredevils, those guys live for that, many of them simply don't have fear, it's a gift or maybe not such a great gift. somebody to admire is somebody who does have fears or addiction problems and overcomes them.

Being fat is a weakness like being a drug addict, or sometimes an illness and you can't help it. I smoke a lot and have a lot of stress so will never be fat, not in my genes. but that doesn't give you a reason not to show respect to people that lost weight.

Like a smoker that quit smoking. You should motivate people, it's called having a concience.
