The Reason I Won't Go To A Webmaster Dinner That Is Thrown Together Last Minute

Honest answer because I will end up paying...

No offence to you at all Odie, you know how much I love ya but that is the reality. In LA a couple of weeks back, Magnus went out to dinner with a couple of our buddies from COHF and word quickly got around for anyone that wasn't attending a sponsored dinner that there were a few people having dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Anyways this dinner was very clearly a "non-sponsored dinner" from the getgo. But a whole pile of people ended up showing up..

Well inevitably the cheque showed up and everyone bolted like the cheap fucks that they were. Magnus, Joel from Gamma and a few other people got stuck with the bill.

This situation has happened to me personally so many times I care not to remember. Hence the reason I won't go to a dinner that will inevitably turn into a clusterfuck with people either forgetting their wallets or expecting me, Sleazydream or Platinum Dave to pay LOL!

Anyways I don't want to talk down or discourage a webmaster dinner it's just that if it's going down please make sure you bring your wallet and don't be a cheap fuck when the bill shows up.

We remember cheap asses ;)

why not just say separate checks the moment you sit down. Saves you grief.

Oracle Porn 11-29-2005 08:05 PM

I find your post ironic....

Phoenix 11-29-2005 08:09 PM

that seriously sucks...but we will see you Saturday night right?

im going down expecting fully to pay my own way

this dinner is just people gettin together..nothing is "sponsored"

Give him a break, we're too nice for that in Canada.

WiredGuy 11-29-2005 08:29 PM

Actually, something similiar did happen at the same dinner last year. Most people did end up paying but that was because Odie went around with the bill collecting from people. But like you said a few people got stuck with a large bill. It is a pain but I think if you know who's going then it should be fine. Making it open invite does become a bit of a problem, especially with people you don't know very well.

i would suggest a flat fee for dinner and drinks and everyone has to pay to get in... :2 cents:

and whoever wants to drink more than included has to pay directly

Odie should'nt have to go knocking on doors to get people to pay for their own bills. She is kind enough to go out of her way to setup these great dinners and ask nothing in return but a thank you as you leave.

She's a saint in this business :)

The people bailed before the checks were delivered. Therefore, somebody had to pay the bill. Guess who? Anybody left at the table.

Because they walked out, the first cheque came to Magnus and as he took his wallet out to pay they all got up and left.

They figured he was a rich mofo and would just pick up the entire tab.

I need to grow some tits so I can get free dinners, too. Brad how did you grow your beautiful breastses?

sickkittens 11-29-2005 08:37 PM

That sucks. It's bad enough going out w/ a bunch of friends and getting screwed; nevermind a bunch of webmasters who you barely know.

That sounds like a great idea but what are you going to do have a debit/credit card machine out infront of the restaurant making sure everyone pays? Plus there are always "hanger ons" people that come along with people in the industry for free drinks/dinners.

Everyone is a friend of someone's.

BradM 11-29-2005 08:38 PM

I fuck for food.

eroswebmaster 11-29-2005 08:38 PM

Phoenix 2004 there was a little get together that wasn't sponsored.
I owed someone a dinner for a few favors so I told him I would be picking up his tab.
Well there were about 4 people who worked for an unnamed sponsor, they were the only ones at the table drinking and of course ran up a huge bill.

Long story short in the end I ended up paying something like $50-$60 over what I owed for my tab only to find out later that the person I bought dinner for still had to throw in $25 after I left because those bozos wouldn't take care of their own shit.

I see it all the time at our local webmaster dinner, and once again the ones who seem a bit preoccupied when it comes time to pay the bill are the ones who buy the bottles of wine, the appetizers etc...and me my $7 burger and $2.50 glass of diet coke ends up costing me $25...LOL

RogerV 11-29-2005 08:39 PM

Happens to me all the time.. Thats why I dont do dinners with those who dont make me money

Juicy D. Links 11-29-2005 08:39 PM

Thank god for her too! She knew people would bolt and good thing she did go around asking people to pitch in or she would have been stiffed even worse by the end of the night. She did a great job even when there was at least 30 extra people than originally invited. It does suck that we need someone to go around collecting, but let's face it, a lot of people in this business try to stick the tab on someone else. Its sad but a reality :(

Now I'm kind of curious... is it predominantly the pikers that don't last long anyway, or is it also people that have been around for years and make a good living? I've never personally seen it happen so I don't really know, I've heard plenty of stories though.

dynastoned 11-29-2005 08:44 PM

what i don't understand is if you know your shit costed like 15-18 bucks just throw down a 20 and that would be the end of it.. instead it seems everyones a fuckin penny pinching whore who wants to make sure they pay the exact amount on the bill and it just becomes a cluster fuck. so i know exactly what you're talking about and i think its lame..

I don't know. I can't imagine why the old timers wouldn't put in, after all why would someone who's been around this business for years wanna ruin their rep for bailing on a $40 - $60 meal? Its possible I suppose but I can't see it happening that often. I'm guessing the majority of this is the friend of someone in this business type dealio.

Normally the sales reps for companies most business owners understand and always pic up the tab.. at least thats been my experience thats why I mostly only deal with the owners who make the decisions

LOL I'm sure. Like I said I see it all the time at the small dinners.

I guess my story wasn't so much about how much it cost me, but the fact that I tried to do something nice for someone who did me a favor and he still had to pay :disgust

ShaneRyale 11-29-2005 08:50 PM

Thanks to Magnus and DH for picking up part of the bill with us, and of course for the passes to the Mansion!

Old timers always pitch in or pick up the next dinner. It's always sales reps or independents...

Why not just ask the waiters to split the bill before ordering? Then everyone knows they're paying for themselves.
