This is the sad state of affairs that this side of the industry has come to. A couple years back we did both Internext and AEE in Vegas. I was pleasantly surprised to see how the video side of things handles these type of situations. There are dinners every night. But if you are not the elite of the elite you are blown off and they really don't give a shit.
I see it at every show that exists now days though. I hear people talking about going to this dinner or that dinner, and I laugh cause I know some of them don't do a lick of business with the sponsor or organizer of that dinner, and they are just going for the free food and drinks. This was actually a large concern of mine when Odie asked if she should set up a dinner for Friday night. I have come up with the idea that whoever comes to dinner on Friday night will be well aware that it is not a sponsored dinner and they are responsible for their own bill. If anyone decides to skip out or leave someone else with the bill they will NOT get into the party on Sat night. I will have no problem yanking their name off the list for Sat night. Harsh? Maybe... But then again so is freeloading. |

i LIKE harsh - good idea - but you should also bann them from gfy too |

The real trick here is that it isn't even so much the food as it is the drinks. I mean I have seen people order shot after shot after shot or even tons of them for several people knowing they are not paying the bill.

I'd like to thanks PLAYBOY/ADULT.COM for stepping up to bat and sponsoring the webmaster dinner upcoming at the Sushi Place. When times were tough I knew you guys would come thru!!!!

LOL this thread is great on so many levels.
Hey WG remember the Rainbow Room in LA couple years back with Grim Shawn, what I thought was ironic was the amount of booze this fucker ordered and clearly wasn't paying for. Timbo picked that up that night however that shit wasn't sponsored just someone sticking the bill, don't get me wrong WG you're welcome to drink on my tab anytime it's the idiots that show up I hardly know, order 20 shots of Jaeger and try and pull that shit. NEVER get a tab at a strip club, I think this goes without saying, no matter who I'm with we always pay by the round at Cheetah's etc, alternate rounds etc because at $80-100 a round for 6-8 people that'd be one massive tab. |

Damn that is some fucked up shit right there.

bring your money |
It is a pretty sad state of affairs sometimes... If I'm at a pay your own way dinner, I pretty generally toss in a hundred a head for myself and anyone who's with me, unless we're somewhere that doesn't serve alcohol. Lunch I figure 50 a head.
Interestingly enough, I think it's more who you're with than just being a bunch of deadbeats in the industry. A couple of years ago, on the completely non-sponsored Vancouver weekend, we never had a problem with anyone trying to skip out on paying a tab, hell, we had more people trying to pay for things than we had bills to pay. And what a fun weekend we had. |
In an industry that revolves around getting things for free I can't say I'm that surprised.

I think that upon entry evryone should throw in money into a pot per se. So the situation does not happen. |

These days, you have to be very careful with words when planning a non-sponsored event. You have to use the term "meeting up" just for starters.
But you can't beat the system no matter how hard you try. Anyone with any kind of a name on GFY does not expect to pay a dime, anywhere. But many sponsors are just as guilty of fueling the fire, I have done "personal" business with a number of people; however, when they have a dinner, I will be damned if I make the list which is fine (I was certainly never huge) but look around and every time the usual poster crowd will be there. Weg gets left off dinner list all the time, and Weg is actually huge. I know I sound like a jerk for saying it, but it is the truth. The same people get invited to the same dinners every year and usually between 9 or 10 of them, they couldn't make you a buck panhandling the Vegas strip for 8 hours. All they must get out of it is a post on GFY with pictures. But hey, to each their own. Eric, you are right about this industry being a lot different....I am still very maladjusted. Believe it or not, whenever I have a Weg dinner, ONLY affiliates go. Also, I always try to send out a mail list or make a post to illicit responses from our affiliates. I leave my friends off those dinner list. When out buying drinks, you have to at least be able to send signups. Or something. There at least has to be the potential for business. |

The same thing happens to me at every show. Also the amount of open bar tabs I've been stuck with is unreal :1orglaugh Last Internext in Florida I had an open tab at the pool bar and was buying drinks for a few hours for lots of people, well after awhile I had to take off for a meeting so I settled up with the tab and then left, well I came to find out later that even after I left a few people (who I will not mention) kept on drinking and even ordered some food and put it all on my tab........hahaha :pimp

I have learned real fast about cheap fucks. The people I dont like are the ones that show up at a dinner, lunch or whatever and eat a NY steak while I had chicken and want to divide the bill by the number of people at the table!!! Why should I pay for some fucking tight fuck that wanted to eat steak and pay the price of a hamburger???
The 2004 Phoenix forum was one that I almost popped a cork at. We arrived at the show early. I was saying hello to people and out of the blue this person latched on to us and wouldnt go away. We had coffee, drinks and all the goodies and this cheap fuck never pulled out his wallet, oh wait he did put down a quarter for a tip for the waitress so we took care of the tip and the bill. This person was always looking for whatever was free...from food to liquor. The second day came and there he was and he came right over to our table and sat down [un invited]. I couldnt take another day of this guy so I let AaronM excuise him from our table.....he never returned again...I think he got the point. :winkwink: When ever an event is sponsored by a particular company, I always make it a point to thank them for being a sponsor and let them know we really appreciated it. We dont go to shows to see what I can get for free and we always make sure we have cash on hand to pay our way. We attend shows to meet people.... :thumbsup...Not to mooch!!! |
That sucks DH.
Just so its known, DH is very generous and I have no doubt he has paid many a dinner tab when the bill came due. A few years back Mark and Sarah came to a non sponsored dinner at the end of the Florida Internext. The bill was close to 2k and everyone was pitching in. Mark asked to pay for the entire bill and we asked him not to do that, as we were all friends there and no one was looking for a free ride. The gesture was appreciated though :thumbsup |
All I'm going to say on this matter is not ALL "Just sales reps" are leeches.
I consider myself more generous than most and make a point of either paying my own way, or at least OFFERING to pay my own way. When we're buying rounds, I'm usually one of the first couple that buys a round...even if the round costs $90 and the waitress doesn't bring ME a drink...bitch. The best incident I can recall is at a jam packed Solid Gold a couple of years ago in Florida with an open bar. The waitressess couldn't get around very well, so I'd just go up to the bar and get them myself. Well, I tipped the bartender $20 to start the night and then tipped $5-10 for a round of 2-4 drinks for the rest of the night. At one point I said to the bartender, "You must be making some nice money tonight." She laughed and said, "Do you realize every time you come up here, you don't have to wait at all?" I told her I did, but just figured it was coincidence because of where I was standing. She said, "No, you're one of only about 3 people tipping us." The place was packed, but it wasn't just sales reps. There were a lot of "Big players" around that night too. Then there was the FTVCash/Dormbucks hospitality suite this year. I was hanging out with a few people and spoke to Brett personally. I thanked him and told him I'd like to give him something for the drinks, because I DON'T send HIM any business...but I DO to FTVCash (which is why I was there). He insisted not. Well instead of just putting the money back in my pocket, the tip jar was there so I dropped a couple of 20's on top of about 10 one dollar bills. I'm sure I'm not the only sales rep that knows how to behave in a public setting, so please don't assume we're all the same. I've learned over time that not everything in this industry is as it seems. |
Good points Ron,
On a free open bar you should be tipping MINIMALLY $2 a drink, however like you I see this shit happen all the time no tips whatsoever. If you don't feel like dropping the money per drink drop a $20 at the beginning of the evening your service will be exponentially better. I'm sure Sleazy can attest to this, I think he tipped $100 at the begining of a night in Santa Monica at an open bar and I believe this was the evening he had to be carried home ;) You get what you pay for, quite a bit of this is the program operator's fault too, don't send your salespeople out with no cash in their wallet, if they're gonna be in situations where they should be picking up drinks or a dinner, or at least paying their own share make sure they can cover it. |

Unless your Derek and he has the pleasure of traveling with Dh and myself, make him change seats with us and other passengers on the plane so we can fly in comfort, then we show up in LA with no cash, the cab does'nt take credit cards and he has to pay the $70.00 cab ride. We did'nt thank him or nothin, we just said Derek pay the man LOL j/k Thanks D!!! |
This is a great thread! I almost hit reply to thread like 20 times but wanted to get thru the whole thread. This happens all the time and is really very sad that people cant conduct themselves like humans. I love the deadbeat list that is perfect I can easily produce 10-20 names for that.
People no one owes you a fucking thing no matter who you are or you think you are, appriciate what people do for you recipricate it once and a while and lastly stop fucking expecting it! :321GFY BTW Juicy you still owe me a few hundred bucks from Scores lol!! oh yah Alligator Arms is my FAVORITE!!! I got it I got it oh you got it great thanks LMFAO |
the least these leeches can do is send traffic back to said program

that sucks man, lots of bums in this biz it seems.
