have you been close to death? REALLY close?

it's sort of like joining an exclusive club. people can talk forever about it, but unless you've experienced it, you seriously don't know shit.

who's really been to that point?

psyko514 11-12-2004 03:33 AM

i nearly drowned when i was younger. i was in a swimming pool at a party and didn't know how to swim. an older girl jumped in and saved my life. pretty crazy.

xclusive 11-12-2004 03:44 AM

I was almost there twice when i was 2 I are lead paint and was in the hospital for 2 weeks and at one point I am told they read me my last rites and then last year I had a stroke and almost bought the farm then as well...

andrew1009 11-12-2004 03:45 AM

I almost drowned when I was 12.

The "white light" people talk about re near death experiences... that's very true. I remember struggling to get out of the pool then things got really still and all I could see around me was a white light. I felt really peaceful.

Then a paramedic woke me up....

xenigo 11-12-2004 03:48 AM

How about you, Quiet?

lazzlo 11-12-2004 03:52 AM

I got in a good accident this summer on my ZX7R, thank god for good equipment. It was quite the wake up call.

JFK 11-12-2004 03:52 AM

me...

stocktrader23 11-12-2004 03:53 AM

I would have fallen a few thousand feet if a friend hadn't grabbed the back of my jacket when I was a kid. The new outlook on life went away after several years though.

Wonder if the stroke is related to the earlier lead poisoning??

Jakke PNG 11-12-2004 03:57 AM

Not that I know of.

Project-Shadow 11-12-2004 03:57 AM

I had pneumonia when I was a kid.. erm don't remember that but I was in a coma for a few days.

Also had a go-karting accident 2 years ago, someone went 40mph into the back of me while I was stationary.. was passed out for 2-3 mins, but I woke up and was pissed at the driver, didnt even know I was out.

Thats about it.

aaron 11-12-2004 04:00 AM

my freshman year of high school i was snowboarding and totally fucked up going off a jump. the snow was really low and my head landed on a stump. luckily there was a skiier coming down behind us that happened to be a doctor. he was able to do the right thing and get help and i was airlifted off the mountain to a hospital in a city 3hours away by car. i was in a coma and all that shit and they didnt know if i was going to make it at first and what not. my skull was cracked and i needed surgery. all i really remember is going snowboarding that day then waking up in the hospital. when i came to my senses i had to do months of inpatient and outpatient therapy and was miraculously able to recover back to normal.

We all come close to death (permanent loss of body) every night when we leave our bodies temporarily during sleep. We just usually don't remember anything about the process unless we make a point of training our mind by regularly watching ourselves fall asleep.

believe it... or not :upsidedow

I have had many conscious out of body experiences but no near death experiences. Most of my OBE's are quite boring as usually when I realize I'm out, I get too excited and before I know it I'm back again.

The similarity of thousands of near death experiences is good proof that we are more than our bodies unless you are a hardened skeptic with a closed mind in which case nothing will change your views.

Jeff aka NIGHTfall 11-12-2004 04:04 AM

i find myself not breathing before i fall sleep, scares the shit out of me because it feels like a last second breath that brings me back, then i keep thinking about breathing, and its hard to goto sleep, i fear ill die "again" but this time not catch that breath... that happens alot to me:(

edit: not sure if i stop breathing, but i dont feel myself breathing and i suck in a breath myself to know feel "alive"

aaron 11-12-2004 04:04 AM

Two explanations I can think of.

First, you may be part of that very small percentage of people whose subconscious automatic refex to breath/survive is missing.

More than likely however, you are just so relaxed that you are not aware of your breathing.

Some people are aware of their breathing even while out of the body and this gives them reassurance that they have a body to come back to. :winkwink:

Go see a doctor, It could be sleep apnia(sp?) It could happen if you are over weight. They have Sleep study clinics where they look at your sleeping habits. You stay over nite and they record your every move, and give you an analysis.

When I was little I rolled over in my sleep and with my face down I almost didn't have the energy to roll back over. I hate it when it happens

I was smoking a joint yesterday and thought i was having a mild heart attack because of these sharp pains i got in my chest on the left-to-middle side... Every breath i took hurt and i felt the pain...

I hit myself a few times in the spot and continued on with smoking the doobie...

It honestly did make me reconsider my life style :)

notjoe 11-12-2004 04:41 AM

This one other time on my way back from the casino my car slid on a patch of ice on the 401 (still had summer rubbers on the car) and i ended up doing 360s on the highway before hitting the rail and coming to a stop...

The most frightening thing was seeing the lights of cars/trucks coming at me while the car was doing the 360s....i thought for sure that me and the gf were finished and we would have been had one of them hit us.

I'd had a lot of close calls in my life but am still here :thumbsup

Trax 11-12-2004 04:44 AM

I've been in such a situation.
My friend just got his drivers license that day and we were cruising around in his old honda lol.
At a strange street corner he then took the wrong lane... and there was this huge truck that almost hit us. He however was able to drag the car to the right in the last second. We crashed off the road, the car was damaged but we were all fine without any major injuries.

My body was shaking all day long. That shit was really close and I was sure that I would die when I saw the truck in front of our car.

Jesus
I will never forget that... We're laughing about it nowadays but that shit was still dammmmmmmmnnnnnnnnnnn close

2 coma's due to a couple of blood clots moving around the body and hitting the lungs when I was younger. It was seriously touch and go for a while on both those occasions. I know death is coming, I have seen the fucker and will be giving the finger. It may be futile, but I will get some sick and twisted pleasure from doing that.

*was doing 120 mph on a highway on a sport bike with a friend of mine, and he had to swerve to the right to miss a bottle in the road and almost lost control. (if we would have hit the bottle, i wouldnt be here right now, thats for sure. my dumbass wasnt even wearing a helmet at the time.)

* 2 yrs ago i was on 45 min plane ride, we flew right into the path of a really bad storm and one of the engines was having trouble. the plane kept going up and down for about 10 mins till we cleared the storm. that was probably the scariest moment in my life.

Va2k 11-12-2004 05:39 AM

Yeap when I was 11 ( 1984 ) I was dead for 6 mins * my sperm donor ) brought be back ( bastard ) with CPR then they flew me to the hospital where I was in a coma for 6 days. All from um... being hung *shrugs*

Almost drowned when I was a kid at the beach was probably 8 or 9 which was as close as I've come. Also when I was a kid I had to have a major surgery and was in intensive care for about a week or two with about a 6 month recovery, but I'm not sure if that one counts.

Don't know if this one counts either..
About 8 years ago, I met up with my cousin for lunch unexpectedly. He was on his way to go fly in a sea plane with one of his friends. The thing is I hadn't seen him in at least 6-8 months and just ran into him at a sub shop. They had an open spot on the plane because another guy couldn't go. So I came very close to going, but I had work to do so I wussed out. Ends up the plane crashed while the pilot was doing a touch and go on a lake and they were all killed.

I could have very easily been on that plane, so I count my lucky stars that I had to work that day.

lol why would you keep that for the memory's? btw what the hell was that?

Odin88 11-12-2004 06:06 AM

Been in some crazy accidents, but I don't consider any close to death I spose. Close to death for me would be a slow process where I knew I was about to die, not a quick accident. Drowning peronsally would be the worst way to go out.

Drowning is supposedly the most peaceful way to go...

The worst way to die would be to be burned alive

I suppose burning would be worse. I fear drowning for some reason though, just the thought and struggle to grab another breath scares me. Though there would be more painful ways to go for sure/

lol man I wasn't laughing at the fact the car was crashed and whom ever was in it, probably almost died. But at the fact he kept the car and has it in his garage is pretty funny.

Herb Kornfield 11-12-2004 06:19 AM

I was about 14 and got pretty sick one summer, came home and went to bed early... mom thought it was odd since school was out at the time.

Had bad vomiting, fever, sweats, totally jacked up in a matter of hours... she calls the DR.

Dr. has no idea what to do other than get me to the hospital PRONTO...I puke and hallicunate the 45 min drive there in the car.

Get to the hospital, get checked in, get whisked off to an isolation room where everyone around me is in space suit looking things as im sitting there alone in my underwear. (( always wear clean underwear, lol))

I get placed in room that has a bed and TV on the wall only, everything else was stripped out apparently. My doctors as well about 15 other doctors come in w/masks on and are examinig, talking, etc.... still no idea whats up and Im getting sicker.

They have a priest come sit with me for last rights, confessions, etc since I am catholic.... at this point, im completely out of my mind from what I remember.

The odd part was that I saw my grandfather that I never met since he died before I was born. We had a conversation that he told me about heaven and what its like... Totally peaceful and calming..... I also saw the face of Jesus and talked to him. He asked me if I wanted to stay or come with him home. I said that I'd like to stay and check things out here on earth.....

As I was lying there dying, a Medical conference was happening at Temple hospital, a Dr there from the Center for Diease control was there speaking and was told of my case. He came in, examined me and told the Doctors that I had Toxic Shock Syndrome.

Since I am male, no one thought to look for TSS to be what was causing my body to shut down so fast.

They got me all kinds of meds that made me sleep about 23 hours a day. I could only stay up to see the news at 5pm and then passed out again to crash....

14 days later I was out of the hospital and spent the rest of the summer vacation from school recovering with Mom watching me like a hawk....

The stragest part wasconversing my grandfather that I saw at the edge of life/death who was dead before I was born, he also hated having his pics taken so I never knew what he looked like.

About a month later my mother was cleaning the house and located her wedding album that actually had a pic of my grandfather that was dead. It was the same fucking image that I saw on the edge..... I'll never forget that momment of realizing that maybe there is somewhere out there.........

mindoza 11-12-2004 06:29 AM

I had diverticulitis most of my life but went undetected, the disease usually attacks people over 50. So about 4 years ago I was experiencing another stomach virus, however this time it was different the pain in my side was off the hook and I was delerious with a high fever. Somehow I made it to the Hospital.

As it turned out I ruptured a hole in my large intestine and was poinsoning my insides. At some point luckily the hole abcessed holding the poison back. I was in the Hospital for about a month and eventually had 3/4's of my large intestine removed.

it takes 15 mins for the body to finally die from a drowning.

i watched this whole thing on the discovery channel when they had the perfect storm special.

i think drowning would be the worst because your mind is still functioning as your breathing stops. so you know you are dying yet you can't do a thing about it.

After the NOLA show in 2000 I wasn't feeling well and went to the ER when I got home to get a shot for my headache. Seems I was bleeding internally and if I had waited another hour, I wouldn't be typing this now :)
