after getting a quick 1am pizza after a night of drinking, I just found a fucking laptop, unattended in the stairway of my apartment building.

Dell inspiron 8000

feeling lucky today? some idiot will now hate himself for having lost his precious PC. and no, I won't try to fucking find the owner.

shithead is not supposed to leave his laptop in a public stairway in a samsonite case. :glugglug

sexyclicks 05-03-2003 10:47 PM

detoxed 05-03-2003 10:48 PM

X37375787 05-03-2003 10:48 PM

[Labret] 05-03-2003 10:48 PM

natkejs 05-03-2003 10:49 PM

That kinda luck should be illegal!

Especially considuring the fact that I accidently tipped over a coca cola can on my inspiron sending it AWOL.

galleryseek 05-03-2003 10:49 PM

IE, CTRL_H!

jus did that to my gf's computer the other day, found entries on google "how to seduce men" what the fuck! she got a bit embarrased.

quiet 05-03-2003 10:50 PM

gotta be lots of interesting stuff to check out.

Dildozer 05-03-2003 10:51 PM

damn!
You are one lucky fuck

cherrylula 05-03-2003 10:54 PM

yeah see what he has on there hahaha

X37375787 05-03-2003 11:12 PM

I will report tomorrow morning, the PC has Win2k installed, I will see if I can get in without a login. :)

hahaha I still can't believe it.

X37375787 05-03-2003 11:12 PM

just wanted to see if it wasn't a pipebomb or an anthrax napkin.

Angelonfire 05-03-2003 11:22 PM

i GUESS YOU NEED A NEW COMPUTER HEY?

Theo 05-03-2003 11:24 PM

check his h.disk, maybe he found the antivirus for SARS and you'll be responsible for the end of humanity by keeping a $2k laptop...

X37375787 05-03-2003 11:24 PM

well, I turned it on, it runs Win XP Pro, the guy's user name is 'Ruff Ryder' and his password hint is 'electronic'.

I need some help here. I read that unupdated versions of XP have a security bug that enables people with a Win2k bootdisk to login as admin and access all the data without a password.

Info, anyone?

X37375787 05-03-2003 11:25 PM

:-)

if it won't work, I'll just make it my linux box. :winkwink:

Ahhh...another terrific boost to my overall opinion of mankind...nice work Equinox.

So, let's see...what are the possible scenarios...a stray computer left in a hallway...o.k. here's one...the owner was mugged and stabbed...the thief got cold feet and left the computer in the first building he could find and ran...Now. the victim is hurting badlyand out of his computer...

Or here's another..the guy was carrying alot of stuff...put the computer down to get a better grip on the rest of his stuff, and then forgot his computer. Now YOU have his computer.

What's the difference between scenario 1 and 2?...the victim doesn't get physically hurt in scenario 2, but the computer is still missing and the person who has it is still a thief.

Do the right thing...try and find the owner.

That's a piss-poor excuse. If you are at all concerned about who you really are, try to find out to whom it belongs.

Roald 05-04-2003 12:50 AM

Send it to me and I will return it to the owner :winkwink:

KRL 05-04-2003 12:58 AM

You could call Dell and run his serial number to get his info I'm sure.

I wouldn't keep it. If you bring it back to him you'll probably get some cash as a reward and can sleep better knowing you didn't ruin someone's life.

A lot of people have everything that makes their world function in their computers. I could never steal someone's life like that. Just plain bad karma.

Do the right thing and post a note in that area so he can get it back.

hybrid 05-04-2003 01:07 AM

There's quite a dichotomy I'm faced with in these types of situations.

One part of me thinks: "How would I feel if the situation was flipped, and I was the victim here?"

Answer: Shitty

And a clear, moral decision could be formed.

On the other hand, another part of me thinks: "What would the typical human being do in a situation like this to me, if the situation was reversed?"

Answer: Keep my shit

And a clear, justifiably criminal act would occur.

Finders keepers, it's the law of the land.

Most of the time, though, I can tell you, whenever the opportunity has been presented to me to exploit someone else's carelessness, I have always felt obligated to follow self-directed answer #1, and sometimes; I hate myself for it.

About a month ago I got a call from the Amsterdam Police. Turned out my girlfriend had dropped her wallet containing about $120, a couple of credit cards and her housekeys in the street on her way to work....this guy found it and took it to the police station. It restored some of my lost faith in humanity.

Fletch XXX 05-04-2003 01:25 AM

Yeh, when I was a kid my mom used to say if you steal other peoples things the boogie man will get you at night when you're sleeping.

1. Backup
2. Insurance

Shit happens.
I'd keep it (unless it was my neighbour or someone I knew ofcourse). And I'd sleep well at night too.

DUDE YOUR GETTING A DELL! :thumbsup

MCsteve-matrix 05-04-2003 02:31 AM

as much as i'd like another laptop, i'd still be the better man and post a notice in my building to see whos it is to try and return it.

Exxxotica 05-04-2003 03:00 AM

Just think how good you would feel if you found the owner and gave it back to him/her.

Carrie 05-04-2003 03:12 AM

If you do post a note, don't say what it is.
"If you recently lost something, please see me in apt. XX."
Make them tell you what they lost and describe it fully.

You never know. It could be stolen - someone could have opened up the door to your building and tossed it in there because they thought they were being followed.

Give the owner a chance to come get it from you, or look around on the computer and try to find out who he is and take it back. If he's like any of us, his whole life is on that machine. He could lose his job because of the data he's lost. It's damned expensive to replace a computer. Maybe it's the company's computer and now they'll take it out of his paycheck, which means a bunch of his bills won't get paid. Mother's Day is next weekend...

Just give the damned thing back... after having a good look around on it. Look at the porn sites he visits and use the info to improve your business!!
You never know, he may have already reported it to the insurance and they're giving him a brand new one that's bigger and faster, and he'll tell you to just keep it! Then you get a free laptop with no guilt attached. :thumbsup

Jakke PNG 05-04-2003 03:19 AM

I'd return it because I already have a better laptop.. if I didn't I wouldn't. I'm an evil, evil man..

you're the devil. but yeah if it was me i'd try to find the owner. no question. karma is a bitch.

shermo 05-04-2003 03:31 AM

You make enough to buy a few of those, I'm sure. Give it back and let the guy's life become a little easier.

bikinihouse 05-04-2003 03:44 AM

No doubt about that! Coming from experience...

Your karma ran over my dogma

twistyneck 05-04-2003 05:57 AM

I could keep a lot of things that I found but not a computer. I think that would bring a ton of bad karma man. Even if you really hate someone, you don't fuck with their computers.

I would snoop through it before giving it back, he owes you that much.

fnet 05-04-2003 06:45 AM

The information in a computer is often a lot more valuable than the hardware. I'm not talking about credit cards.

As for backup, I could see Ruff Ryder having his shit backed up, but probably not his data.

LadyMischief 05-04-2003 07:42 AM

Dude, pass me some of that luck.

X37375787 05-04-2003 08:49 AM

after sleeping over it, I decided to handle it another way. *if* the person whose laptop it is will make the effort to post some info on the walls about his/her missing hardware, I will respond.

if there's no effort at all, well... I have a new computer.

Cheers.
