Something similar happened to me. Somehow my wallet fell out of my pocket in a movie, which I discovered when I got home. I called the theater telling them my suspicion that that was where I had lost it, and of course they couldn't stop the movie to see if they could find my wallet. Between movies, they looked and couldn't find it and I was quite disheartened, until I got a knock on the door and a gay couple handed me back my wallet. I offered them $20 for their efforts but they absolutely refused to take any reward money saying they were just doing what they hoped someone else would do for one of them.

I guess what I find disheartening about the whole thread is that there is really any question what to do. Make an effort to find the owner and if that proves fruitless, donate it to a school.

If it was easy to tell who's it was from looking at the data on it, I would give it back. Or maybe post an ad in the paper saying where you found it, and ask whoever calls to claim it to describe it in detail, but I sure as hell wouldn't give it to the police.
