reading this thread I am getting a real blast about people raising their fingers up high to the sky, preaching how much of a good deed it would be to make an effort to find the owner.

I did not break into anoyone's property to take it out of there, I profitted off someone else's idiocy/drunkness/whatever and found a laptop. Shit out of luck. Better luck next time.

I gotta take the side of making an effort to find the owner, even if it is as little an effort as putting a note up as you said, "Found item, call 555-5555 to describe."

Someone could lose some serious shit if they lost a laptop.. 100s of pages if they were an author, 100s of gallery or website designs if they were an artist, weeks or months of research & design if they were in science or engineering, or maybe even their job if the information on the drive was sensative.

On the other hand, if the owner doesn't hand over a hefty reward I'd be pretty pissed. Granted I'd "know I did the right thing," but I could have saved that dude's ass, the least he could do is drop me a c-note and a bottle of Tanqueray, preferably No. 10. ;)

Maybe he'll invite you over for an exotic indian dinner and to take nudie pics of his wife? haha..

Haha, thanks for the offer, I am not really in need for one. It was just something I had considered for a while, but then got a SFF PC instead.

You are right Jimmy... returning the notebook was like a slap in the fucking face. I was really fighting an inner battle for a few hours before my g/f finally convinced me to return it to the guy.

Seeing the ignorance on his face, not even knowing that the item was missing... that pissed me off the most. Last night I should have just removed the name tag off the case and dumped it into a fucking trash can, instead of researching whose property it was.

My g/f said that it wasn't even the monetary value if the PC, but the stuff that was potentially stored on its harddisk. That's what convinced me to bring it back. For example, the guy might have been a grad student who had his desertation stored on it... formatting it could have been lethal. But then again I think that he only had his hdd filled with free porn, considering his reaction.

Lesson learned. I tried to fuck someone, then decided against it, and finally got fucked myself.

Never again. F34r m3. And your laptops too. Secure them tightly with an anker, or I will take possession of it.
