what's the best martial arts for self defense?

i'm thinking about learning self defense, but i don't know anything about martial arts.

what would be best to learn to protect myself from some girl's pissed-off boyfriend at a bar or similar situation?

take it easy,

Aikido.

I love it. There's no offensive moves in it whatsoever. It's all defensive, and it's fun to watch an unsuspecting idiot fly. :)

newbreed 04-19-2005 07:45 PM

Actually it's a Mexican art, El-Glocko. Do a google on it, you will be inspired. :)

eatapeach 04-19-2005 07:46 PM

thanks bv, that will help me pick up the chix into the whole "robocop" look.

David! 04-19-2005 07:47 PM

I've been doing Krav Maga for over a year now, lost lots of weight and can defend myself in 95% of the case. Sure it won't help against some Kung Fu master, but since 95% of people can't fight, you're pretty much covered. Plus it's a great aerobic work out :2 cents:

JD 04-19-2005 07:49 PM

i agree with Tala. Aikido is the shit. You can REALLY fuck someone up and make them look like jackasses because they beat their own ass pretty much

xNetworx 04-19-2005 07:54 PM

Find a school that teaches kickboxing and jujitsu and sign up for both. This will cover your standing game and ground game.. trust me... you'll need both.

eatapeach 04-19-2005 07:54 PM

i found one site by this bouncer guy http://www.geoffthompson.com/ . if you want to know the secret techniques for destroying the tendons in your opponents hands, he's the guy.

i live in a really small town, and i just want to get away with as little drama as possible. no need to invite other shitheads to try me just because they heard i was a bad dude or something.

Love Brokers 04-19-2005 07:55 PM

It's not the style of martial art, its the practitioner's desire and persiverance! I studied Gosoku Ryu, (an offshoot of Shotokan) for ten years. But I believe a decently trained boxer could probably kick my ass! :(

But then again, my training ended over 20 years ago. I did train at least 5 days a weeks, often twice a day. It was fun though.

Aikido, but takes a long time to learn it good, more than any other art I think.

WebTitan 04-19-2005 08:19 PM

the BEST bet is a great combination of styles, and takes more than a few years to really develop what will work best for you, i have been studying many styles since 1988, Hakko Ryu Jujutsu, Shorinji Kenpo, plus several other smaller 'americanized' styles and I have never had to prove myself outside of our weekly 'fight night' but and very confident that i very able to defend myself if necessary. best to learn as much as you can and then apply what works best for you :thumbsup

eatapeach 04-19-2005 08:21 PM

yikes. it sounds like it would be easier just to stay home and spank my bologna to online porn.

jukeboxfrank 04-19-2005 08:21 PM

I know Hakko Ryu Jujutsu, Shorinji Kenpo and three other jap words.....

At Rex Kwan Do, we use the buddy system.

Rorschach 04-19-2005 10:41 PM

wing chun for a real street fight against multiple assailants...

Anthony 04-19-2005 10:53 PM

Sorry Tala and everyone that thinks Aikido is good for self defense. It only looks that way in class with a non resisting opponent.

Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. It was mentioned before, stand up and ground. Both styles are 100 percent alive, meaning you train against a fully resisting opponent, which is more applicable to real life and not some guy who is taught ukemi, or learning how to fall when thrown in practice.

Rorschach 04-19-2005 10:56 PM

first rule of a street fight: if you go to the ground, get up!

Pleasurepays 04-19-2005 11:08 PM

these threads are always stupid.

if you are not going to devote a significant portion of your life to fighting... then there is no particular style that is going to help you at all. get a gun or taser gun or just dont be in bad places.

I get tired of all the "aikido is the best" crap. aikido is just a lame way to make women and worthless hippies feel empowered. nothing else. no matter what you think about aikido, the fact is that it takes a willing opponent to train. that is its greatest flaw. and if you think that learning a few arm locks and wrist locks are going to save your life one night in a dark alley against a guy whos adreneline and endorphines are pumping and will continue to spike further everytime you respond agressively, then you are deluding yourself... and lets all please, stop pretending that the laws of physics cease to exist because you studied Rex Kwon Do for a week and a 1/2. a 110-150 pound girl is going to destroyed by the average male no matter what she knows. she is smaller and weaker. laws of physics do apply when you are trying to hit someone twice your size with twice your strength. the only exceptions i have ever seen to this are women who have trained seriously for many many many years and have devoted their life to fighting arts who have unusual strength and focus.

Most importantly, you have to understand that you will never be better than the effort you devote to any particular fighting style. Are you going to give 110% for 5 years, 4-5 times a week to become good? or are you going to go to Tai Bo twice a week for 20 mins just so you can tell yourself you have never felt more confident?

My experience is that almost all women will suck no matter what they study, regardless of how long.... because quite simply, its unlikely that someone is going to be able to train you to snap and explode forward agressively with the intent to take someone out. woman have a hard time becoming violent and agressive. MOST women and usually at least 1/2 of men will never have that regardless of how hard they train. if you dont have the capability to be violent, agressive and really hurt people then don't waste your time. if you are deluding yourself by saying "yeah, well if someone is attacking me, i would not hesitate to..." then you better try to punch someone in the face or break their arm first just to see that it really isnt that easy... and certainly not easy when they are attacking you. hitting someone to knock them out or break something is not as easy as it seems... for anyone unless you are somewhat sadistic and cruel. are you?

:2 cents: :2 cents:

If you go to the ground, win.

That's what fighting in all ranges mean.

Pleasesure pays, great post.

TehKinkyHotness 04-20-2005 08:40 PM

jiu jitsu is designed to defend yourself against opponents that are bigger and stronger than you. It is a good choice. Less striking, more taking enemy to the ground and injuring them enough to not fight/walk... Some of the techniques are quit simple as well.

tony286 04-20-2005 08:48 PM

The best defense is say your sorry and walk away. As cool as the fantasy is to kick someones ass using some cool move and its over is nice but rarely what happens. They come back with bats, guns now your really fucked. I studied Kung Fu for 3 yrs and if my Sifu said it once he said it a thousand times walkaway. The best defense is to avoid,I bounced for over 15 yrs and came to blows only twice. Its easier to difuse then you think .

i liked taking Tae Kwon Do. :)

effer 04-20-2005 09:56 PM

Lift some weights, take creatine, and get an intimidating upper body build. Also work on getting the right expression on your face when shits about to hit the fan. Image is everything! Most people get scared shitless when they are confronted by someone who looks like they have nothing to lose, or could possibly enjoy the fight regardless of the outcome!

Having said that, you should back up this badass image with BOXING and some type of wrestling, preferrably submission wrestling (no grabbing clothes). DONT go for any of the traditional martial arts as a general rule, unless they teach strickly scientific techniques. Stay away from anything DEFENSIVE like aikido. Start watching MMA like the PRIDE MIDDLEWEIGHT GP THIS WEEKEND!!!!

VeriSexy 04-20-2005 10:51 PM

That thing looks cool :thumbsup

Ycaza 04-20-2005 10:58 PM

Krav is a really cool art but almost any of them will help, If you want to really know something study Ba Gwa or bagwan/pakua. make sure they can teach the Qi Gong. you will basically become a jedi from this, you learn every form of fighting and how to master yourself.

I totally agree I was a bouncer for a few years and only had a few altercations most people are pussies and if you talk to them and buy them a beer they will usually understand. Lets say you kick his ass whose to say that he's not thier with a bunch of friend? What about next time you go to the place and the person sees you and decides to get a gun and blow your brains out? Shit like that can happen i've seen it before.

That's a politically correct Russian AK (7.62 x 39) with an illuminated Russian scope. Legal to hunt with.

As far as personal protection, I choose the 357 revolver for it's simplicity and reliability. If my life is on the line, I would rather trust a revolver over an auto any day.

Bruce Lee created Jeet Kune Do by taking only the things that worked.
From all the different Martial Arts. Theirs videos you can buy or in most major cities you can find a place.
