I think you should rethink the house being open to friends at all times. A woman's home is her nest and she wont ever be happy in a situation without any control

i cannot stand having to tell people they need to give 2 days notice before they come over.

this is actually a major point for me. my home is open and made to feel like it's always open. (bedroom of course is another story)

As long as you make her feel just at home, and just as you can say "I need a day without visitors", she should be able to say the same.

But that's if you live together. If you have your own places, then she can just go home. :)
