Is it right to give back an X-mas gift?

bought an employee some luggage - inside was a purse, perfume, wallet, watch etc.

they me BACK the luggage - and it was nice luggage.

I don't even know how to feel? :helpme

Elli 12-17-2005 12:33 PM

They gave it back to you? as a gift or as an "I don't want it" thing?

pr0 12-17-2005 12:34 PM

i don't want it

WiredGuy 12-17-2005 12:36 PM

Did they keep everything that was inside? Seems odd if you ask me.

Elli 12-17-2005 12:37 PM

Very weird. Maybe they felt it was too valuable a gift, though. Giving too much can sometimes make a person feel very awkward.

Penthouse Tony 12-17-2005 12:37 PM

maybe they didn't want to carry all your baggage. :winkwink:

if they gave it back like i don't want anything from you ... then you need to let them go .. if they don't like you ...they can steal from you ...not good

pornguy 12-17-2005 12:37 PM

If that were me, I would sit down with them and find out why.

CDSmith 12-17-2005 12:38 PM

Wow.... is all I can say to that.

Time to maybe make this person an "ex-employee"?

Harsh right before christmas, but.... wow. Handing someone their thoughtful gift back is, well, unthinkable and lacking in manners, courtesy etc.

European Lee 12-17-2005 12:39 PM

Who the fuck buys luggage for a Christmas present? :helpme

Next year, buy them a collander or vegetable peeler to, thats just about as usefull as luggage.

Regards,

Lee

nope - they said thye didn't have room for it. my thoughts are - re-gift the fucking thing then to someone else

NoCarrier 12-17-2005 12:41 PM

Who the fuck gives luggage to an employee anyway?

Let me guess, you bought blenders as christmas gifts to your wife?

CDSmith 12-17-2005 12:45 PM

After watching the Seinfeld episode on re-gifting, I'm not big on that either.

Remember the label-maker? :D

Penthouse Tony 12-17-2005 12:47 PM

Could they have a jealous significant other who they wouldn't want knowing that they recieve gifts from work? If so then it looks like they kept the small stuff but had to give you back the big stuff.

Tricksy 12-17-2005 12:51 PM

it's weird...

what, pre tell, is wrong with a blender?

sherie 12-17-2005 12:55 PM

Hmmm, it is strange to only keep half of a gift. But if they don't have room for it, perhaps they thought that it's was honest to give it back so that you could refund it for $$ than to just keep it and give it to someone else. You never really know what someone is thinking unless you ask them. Don't feel bad, I'm sure that the intent was not to hurt your feelings.

Sosa 12-17-2005 01:09 PM

I've never had that happen to me but that is fucked up. Keep it or just give it to someone else.

That's pretty rude, Scott.

Give the luggage to someone who would appreciate the concept of gift giving.

How can they not have room for it? Are they living in a box? It's luggage. It's not like luggage is so huge.

MandyBlake 12-17-2005 01:18 PM

maybe they thought you could get your money back for it.

grumpy 12-17-2005 01:44 PM

you can not buy everybody with gifts. Next time buy something people really like. Expensive doesnt automaticly means they will like it.

surreal www.sexbombxxx.ne 12-17-2005 01:45 PM

If I were you, I'd take that luggage and toss it through the guys window!

Very bad form, IMO. I get gifts every year I don't want. I regift them - making sure the person who originally gave me the gift isn't around for the regift ;)

Being gracious seems like a disappearing quality these days.

Hey You . . . I Know You! 12-17-2005 01:52 PM

Is there anything we should know about the history between you and this employee?

This could make all the difference in the answers you receive.

justsexxx 12-17-2005 01:55 PM

I woud give them another x-mas present.

You are fired

Damn that was rude....I would NEVER give something back when I GET something....Even when you don't like it. It's the idea of getting something...Oh well some ppl will never understand that

Brad Mitchell 12-17-2005 02:15 PM

That's very strange. I can't imagine giving something like that back. I'd suggest you open a dialogue with them again until they really satisfy your curiousity about why they gave it back. I don't know what kind of luggage it was, but I have to imagine if it was LV many people would just feel plain uncomfortable because it's no damn nice and expensive. Otherwise, shoot, who doesn't need new luggage?!

:)

You are nicer than me, Mr. Shemp.

They'd likely not be working for me next Christmas.

That is one of the most ill mannered boorish things I have heard in a long time.

Brujah 12-17-2005 02:32 PM

Since they kept the purse, perfume, wallet, watch, etc.. that almost throws out the whole idea that it might have been inappropriate gift to a female employee.. but it's possible it might cause some problems with a jealous boyfriend or husband. In any case, maybe consider this female isn't rude but there's a valid reason she felt uncomfortable with it and wasn't sure how to handle it.

devilspost 12-17-2005 02:39 PM

Maybe they didnt want to regift cuz they feel like it would be ripping you off.

Tell that to Epoch - they've been giving out Tumi luggage for years and I've never heard one single complaint :)

I wouldn't exactly consider regifting being "gracious" either. My mom would skin me if she ever caught me doing that. In my opinion, regifting behind someone's back is even more rude than giving a gift back.

This situation really depends on how the gift was given back. There are ways to give back gifts, and there are ways to not give back gifts.

Why is luggage a bad gift? My mom gave me a new set of luggage a few years back and it was a great gift.

It amazes me how ungrateful people really are when receiving gifts. A GIFT is a GIFT, you should be thankful that the person even took the time out of their day to think of you, much less the money they just spent. Reminds me of why I only buy gifts for people when I want to instead of when they expect it.
