Who's gone Windows cold turkey?
I'm thinking about going all Linux Mint, and getting rid of the windows. They have everything I need, chrome/firefox, thunderbird, statsremote, netbeans, office, gimp(not the best) and video editors. I think I could realistically do this.
Hell there is even a program to control two pcs with one mouse keyboard! Anyone have any advice on making the convert? |
I have tried every OS and always come back to Win.
|
I always back to Windows for the applications :S

Everything was developed for Windows. Linux has a lot of shit you need to fuck with. Linux is good for web-servers and for admins/developers, Windows for ordinary uses. But it is just my opinion. |
Leave Windows
I would leave Windows but I use
ACT! for CRM Lotus Approach for Database And left Windows, but the writers of MailWash haven't made a Lion version. |
Basically at this point, I'm the only one even considering it?

All Google engineers start with a Linux desktop with a modified version of Ubuntu.

I dualboot, Win 7 and Linux Mint.
I've tried to go 100% Linux but there's apps and games for Win that doesn't run good under Linux. I always end up going back to Win. |
The only short coming with Debian/Ubuntu LINUX it the lack of USA accounting software for me. |
linux mint ftw it's based on ubunty but running much smoother, i have been using it on my netbook for almost a year now, and recently i installed it on desktop, and laptop, i really like it but i also have windows 7 for gaming .. try it, you won't regret it!

I had to go to ubuntu because windows kept getting trojans. when you have very important rankings in google, only access paypal/hosting/other important logins using linux. Linux = trojan/virus free
Im sick of ubuntu now, Im fixin to install CentOs or Mint |
I've been running Linux as my only desktop OS since 1998... Before that I had a Mac, so I've never actually ran Windows. Kind of weird.
Nowadays I stick with Ubuntu mostly for the installer and the hardware detection. |

As far as advice for the OP, you said your Linux system does everything you need, right? Well there you go. If you have any problems or questions related to Linux let us know. I guess the one piece of advice generally is something you've probably already figured out - don't overuse Wine. In fifteen years I've had occasion to use Wine maybe four times. Instead use native software. For example, people who know nothing about it might try to run MS Office using Wine or something. Better results come from using native software like OpenOffice, LibreOffice, or Abiword. |

Exactly that with most serious designers & pc users. Dual boot, using both, why not if both are available to use :2 cents: Any one know what program works best in Linux for video editing? |
why quit?
Windows 7 is a great OS. It's easy to use, it's very stable and it gets any job done. The grass isn't any greener on the other side. |
And you wouldn't be able to play to mass effect 3 !
|
i cant afford windows...
Thats why I freeze to death late at night, while I sit and use my iMac... Chilly!!! |
Linux Ubuntu user since 2004ish, tried Linux Mint when it first came out as well...went back to Ubuntu.
I dumped windblows and NEVER looked back, no dual boot, no WINE. I want nothing to do with windows. There's also a lesser chance of getting trojans/viruses using Linux (notice I said LESSER CHANCE)...considering 90% of that shit is written to attack the high-tech, slow to catch up, copycat, swiss cheese OS, windblows. Yep, I'm biased, I shouldn't have to lock my PC down to barebones functionality as well as need to run damn-near EVERY piece of security software on the planet just to surf the web (using windblows of course). A substantially LESS amount of worry and dread when I use my PC since I made the leap to Linux (friends and family STILL complain about their PC issues, I ignore their pleas for help and tell them to switch to Linux). I call it "tough love" and those 'Help, my PC is broken" calls, emails and texts have pretty much stopped. Wah, wah, wah, mom, you should've stuck with Linux. |

Tried several linux OSs but every time came back to windows......

Tried it but somehow I'm way more productive in Windows 7 environment...

What's wrong with Windows? Are you one of those people still using XP?

Well the caching bug introduced in IE 4 still hasn't been fixed. That's why jpegs still sometimes save as bmp and one reason IE seems slow - it doesn't cache right. Want 36,429 other examples? |

I couldn't get past Gimp.. Too used to photoshop. Always had to go back to windows.

Linux desktop is way behind Windows or Mac desktops. Gimp sucks even only because of their PNG/JPG compression & image scaling algorithms - no comparison to Photoshop.
I always come back to Mac these days, after having used Windows since 3.1 and Linux since one of the earlier releases of Slackware. |

windows is the only system that lets me concentrate on my work instead of wasting time on looking for solutions to problems that i dont have when i use windows
|
I always wondered instead of 45 different version of linux . Why dont they unite and create one killer one?
