I got fired, need advice
 

So today I found out I am losing my job at the car dealership as an internet manager.. I was bringing in leads, I was responsible in taking pictures, writing descriptions, posting them online.. building sites, driving traffic, getting phone calls etc.. I got about 60-90 leads a month.

A top sales person at our dealership said she was going to quit because she wanted to earn more money, she makes 80k and wanted to make more.. so they gave her my job and my pay because they dont want to lose her and I been there only 8 months compared to her 11 years.. my used car manager is thinking about quitting and following me where ever I go..

I got ppl telling me they cant do that to me.. or they need to serve me with a paper.. give me roi so i can go on unemployment.. im totally lost on all this...

Jesus man. That sucks, but, I dont really see why they cant get rid of you if they want to. They can simply lay you off and switch her title. I dont see any recourse on your end. But yea im sure they are entitled to paying you unemployment.

All you can do now is beat feet and find a new job.

What I dont get is... shes an asset of theirs... she wants more money... so they give her your job? Are you saying she was making less than you? or she is simply doing both jobs now for an increase in pay?

Have you called the Ontario Labor Board? They deal specifically with situations like this and can get you your job back with pay if they fired you incorrectly.

I'm sorry to hear this and wish you good luck. My only advice is to not undervalue the benefits of trying to be employed by good people who will treat you fairly as you move ahead.

thats my plan, I got alot of references... what a piss off thou, they want me to go in the next 2 weeks and teach the salesperson what i do, seriously do they expect this from me.. i dont need to show her do I.. I am worried they will fuck me over if I don't.

oh did I mention the salesperson and manager are best of friends.

Like TheLegacy stated, call the labor board... as an exCanadian corp owner, that's a phone call we don't like ex-employees making, at all.

Labor laws change from place to place and I have no idea what they are there, but your local labor board could certainly tell you. That being said, I would make it clear you expect a stellar letter of recommendation and take that to the dealer's biggest competition. Before you go, be sure to collect your stats, ie increases in leads:sales since your taking the position and that sort of thing - anything qualitative or quantitative that you can back up.

They can't do anything to you. And you are not required to train anyone unless that's in the job description you signed when you took the job.

At least that's how it works here in NYS.

thats my plan as I really hate doing 9-5 and driving in traffic and snow, after spending 12 years online.. this is the hardest I have ever worked and I am proud of myself, only to get it taken from me.. almost feels like my websites have been stolen.. hell they have been, everything I ever built I gotta just hand it over and walk.

I gotta find a way to do this from home for all the dealerships and sell the leads only.

thats just a temp fix. Ill be fine in the end.. just want to make the best of the situation.

You can lay people off... but if you lay them off you can't replace them for some period of time or something like that.. You'd have to fire them instead, but you'd have to have cause to do so. In this case they're doing away with his position and combining it with another which I believe is legal.

seek revenge, get their websites blacklisted in all search engines, dry the lead traffic up, sabotage all sem accounts, then hire some russians to to fuck with their sites on a weekly basis....done

Whatever you do, PLEASE do not show anyone how you do anything.

make sure you keep a backdoor open for those sites - get your revenge later on ;)

if I was you, I would apply at other dealerships as their internet manager. actually, I have a PPC product that is dedicated to automotive dealers and their new & used inventory. Its similar to what Moore&Scarry has, but WAYYYY better. Hit me up if you want anymore info, but if it helps you, you can use it

i would damage the websites.

make sure the dada crashes say a week after you leave and make sure they have no back up.

and when they contact you, you say that sucks but i presume your new internet person will have made a backup.

but at very least, make a copy of there data base and sell it to there competition.

You need to talk to an attorney. Employment laws might be different in your jurisdiction.

well there is a problem with that.. I just finished my basement, put a bathroom down there and got a new roomate who also works for other dealerships owned by the same guy, and we often shared projects.. so seeking revenge isnt a good idea.. watching the new girl fail and leaving the dealership after she realize that this is too much extra work for a 20k raise on top of her job as well.. she just wont have time.

The consultation that they want you to do is worth far more money than they are going to be paying you. That consultation is gold, even if you are a total idiot.

I think it will take me 2 weeks just to show her how to watermark images in photoshop, I had to show the internet guy at another dealership just how to resize an image.. i thought this was common knowledge.

Your job can't be taught in two weeks to a complete newb. She is going to fail. She would do a better job taking over a fired mechanics job.

That's the best advice you could possibly get if you want to continue in that career. Don't burn your bridges on the way out the door. Hell she could fuck shit up and they could beg you to come back...

make sure you get a record of employment for sure from them, and call the labour board tomorrow and ask them if you have to train someone just so it leads to you getting laid off and that person replacing you

dont be afraid to treat the company like the business it is, play hard ball because they would do it with you like they are now

i dont know if you have to give up your leads/way of getting leads

tell them you are willing to continue fulfilling your obligations for the next 2 weeks but that you dont feel your obligations include training someone to do that as its not the job you signed up for
