ABC News: Bird Flu Warning

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/print?id=1716820

As usual whenever something weird happens it takes our mainstream news all the fuck out late assed to cover the story.

Anyone familiar with biology knows what's going to happen soon. Millions and millions of dead birds and Kentucky Fried Chicken might go out of business for a while.

Best to keep an eye on this.

BoyAlley 03-13-2006 11:00 AM

I'm scurred.

Someone save me.

JD 03-13-2006 11:01 AM

looks like it's time to buy that rifle i was planning on picking up.

ABC News has obtained a mathematical projection prepared by federal scientists based on an initial outbreak on an East Coast chicken farm in which humans are infected. Within three months, with no vaccine, almost half of the country would have the flu.
I've got a degree in biochemistry - but it doesnt take that to figure out that this is very, very true. US vaccine production would not be able to meet demand for a large scale flu epidemic such as this. The worst hit would be children and the elderly - with very large scale mortality rates.

Stock up on canned tuna and dried milk?

I dont know which of those two things is more disgusting to me, lol. Not the ideal provisions to stock up on.

Heh. Some points of interest:

1. Not that easy to transmit to humans
2. A majority of those infected are in asia ... and found that most are in poor health and/or live on farms, sleep on the ground, etc.
3. Don't lay in bird shit and you should be fine.

1. it mutates
2. for now
3. it'll most likely be airbourne once it begins to hit humans

polish_aristocrat 03-13-2006 11:10 AM

I respectfully disagree.

If you look back in history, you will see we are long overdue for an epidemic. It is a natural way of life.

And you need to look at what this flu does to healthy lungs, then you understand why it is so dangerous. The issue is that the virus, like others in the past, is manifesting and becoming more agile; more intelligent.

I have said from day 1 this is our most dangerous enemy in our current climate. Al Quada can not do in 20 years what this can do in a matter of weeks.

1. Genetic mutations of the bird-flu virus could be very rapid givin a new breeding environment.
2. There are plenty of people in poor health in the US. Once it gains any sort of strength amoung a certain group (those with lowered immune systems) it will strengthen and mutate into more resistant forms which will more easily infect those with normal immune systems.
3. See #1 and # 2 - you don't HAVE to lay in bird shit to get it.

BoyAlley 03-13-2006 11:16 AM

This is very bad news for those among us that enjoy wallowing in bird excrement.

Michael O 03-13-2006 11:19 AM

There is no doubt that birds infected with bird flu will come to USA its only a matter of time it took a month to spread from southern Europe to the rest of Europe.
The big question is if it will mutate to a strain that easily infects humans.

There you go. Right on.

Such pathogens are unpredictable and can go in any direction. It could well be that by the time it goes from one species to another it mutates into something harmless to humans. On the other hand the worse case scenario.

Due to the huge human population, a mutated form transmissable by sneezing or contact would spread like wildfire due to our intercontinental travel. In bygone eras when the population was well below a billion and limited travel by ship only such pathogens might take centuries to reach the far ends of the Earth. Nowadays it only takes one plane, or one refugee in a rubber raft.

The U.S. is not capable of meeting this menace if it does become a menace. It's now in cats and that's not a good sign at all. We need to really be concerned if it passes to mice and rats or can become transmissable via mosquito.

Look at the potential disaster:

Malaria. Every year over 300 million people get malaria. 3 million die. If it weren't for the readily available round the clock medicine we would lose 3 billion people in a decade. If the Bird Flu is transmissable by mosquito and no treatments available we're talking Biblical proportion fuck up.

Considering the Bush Administrations lonnng history of 'We were misinformed' or 'The data provided to this administration was inaccurate', it's better than even money that should a disaster occur we will be no where near prepared. The rich won't care because that means more room for them.

Oh, it's more fucked up than that! In a month the birds who've flown south for the winter will be returning to the U.S. and Canada. Right smack dab into the path of when this disease is due to hit here. That means it will have the warm spring and summer environment to nurture. People will have to keep their cats and dogs inside or have them terminated. Geesh! Isn't that the way 'Planet of the Apes' started? All the cats and dogs died and we took apes as pets? Where's 'Jay' from 'Jay and Silent Bob' and his rant about what if apes took over earth?

Seriously, we're looking at a dangerous scenario. Even if all the birds themselves died of this shit, they will have passed massive amounts of this into the environment from droppings and from predators.

Need we forget the pigeons populating the cities?

If the pigeons start dropping this stuff and such it's gonna be like living in a horror movie.

This does NOT look good from the expansion profile alone. This entry of this disease into the environment at this time is a worse case scenario.

Greg B 03-13-2006 11:27 AM

Hey, I figured someone would have had a photochop of 'Big Bird' from Sesame Street laid out with x's on his eyes.

Tom_PM 03-13-2006 11:30 AM

I heard a flock of canadian geese fly over the other day already, so they're on their way.

SmokeyTheBear 03-13-2006 11:34 AM

i did an thread yesterday about a related story..

The company that makes the only cure for bird flu ( tamiflu ) is called gilead , its a biotech firm in california.. the board of directors was run by DONALD RUMSFELD ( yup the sec of defense ) up until 2001 when he joined the bush team. and coincidently the same time they invented tamiflu

Now donald is raking in the cash from this "coincidence"

This is case-in-point that we Americans are a stupid lot.

Ja, mid March is usually their timing. Just in time to drop shit all over the golf courses.

This does NOT look good.

SmokeyTheBear 03-13-2006 11:38 AM

so theres 3 possibilities..

1) the bird flu threat is fake , but hyped so rumsfeld can make some cash

2) the bird flu threat is real but tamiflu wont help you

3) rumsfeld just happened to work at a biotech firm even though he doesnt seem like a disease specialist , and they just happened to invent the only sure for the bird flu , shortyl after donald rumsfeld left , putting him in the perfect position to sell it for them..

pornguy 03-13-2006 11:39 AM

Wonder where this came from?? they say, that AIDS came from a monkey. Which I dont believe. What about this.

Greg B 03-13-2006 11:40 AM

Let me explain. Sure a worse case scenario is us humans being wiped out by an epidemic but we're not taking into account the livestock. Should somehow something happen to the pigs and cattle and birds, we'd be out of food real mother fucking quick. No eggs, no hamburgers the entire food processing industry would collapse and we'd be back to vegetables and grains and nuts. Forget fish as the strain on the fishing industry would be incomprehensible.

Dogs, cats dying from this shit? Scary.

Now for the most fucked up scenario possible:

Bats.

Bats aren't rodents. They've been reclassified as more primate than rodent. If they dropped all mankind would be fucked as they're the mosquito's #1 predator.

Phoenix 03-13-2006 11:41 AM

where can i buy tamiflu?

Don't forget it was good ol' Donald Rumsfeld who had Aspartame ok'd by the FDA when President Reagan and the FDA said hell no because it was irrefutably a toxin. Rumsfeld manipulated things so that the FDA would approve of aspartame and now people have been dying by the truckload and ending up with all kinds of affirmaties.

We don't pay attention to the people snaking through our government. We allowed Nelson Rockefeller to be vice president for gosh sakes.

No one in Washington is fighting this nonsense because they don't want to DIE. They're cowards. Plain and simple. They love those big fat life-long checks for representing the people but they don't want to represent the people.

Tamiflu is not a cure. Test have proven only 50% of the patients using Tamiflu survive. Same odds you get if you don't take Tamiflu.

you people crack me up!
you are in an industry where ATM means "ass to mouth", not "automated teller machine" and Aids is a constant fear and you are afraid of a fucking chicken?
give me a break!
Hollywood has no idea where the real talent is.
You fuckers are Oscar material if there ever was.

AIDS is a constant threat for CONTENT not webmasters. there's a few that do both content and webmastering but most don't.

I'm not worried about AIDS of the bird flu. I just know that the bird flu *IF* it mutates is really going to kick the planet in the nuts.

I should have said "touted" as the cure..:thumbsup i highly doubt it works , just based on the theory of who is making it.
