They are all nice cars.
However, take a look at the re-sale values on the SUV luxury models. You will take a pretty big hit when it is time to trade them in compared to the luxury sedan models. I bought the 2002 MB sedan instead of the SUV after the dealer showed me all the USED M classes sitting on the lot looking for owners at a substantial discount off the list price. I hate getting screwed by depreciation. If this is not a factor in your buying process. Enjoy yourself. |

I just got back from test driving both suv's.. It wasn't entirely apples to apples..the MB had some break-in miles on it,nearly 6k where the BMW i drove was brand new..just over 90 miles. I drove both just over 15 miles..some country,a little interstate and back into town to the dealers.
The Bmw felt more nimble and clearly had stronger brakes and a little crisper shifting points. The MB felt faster to accelerate to freeway speeds..and took bumps better. Both had topend sound systems.. On the little bit of snow we have the MB was superior in acceleration from a dead stop.Under full pedal the MB never spun the tires,,where the BMW did..and the antislip kicked in several times. The dash layout on the BMW is almost identical to my 330,which i like..the MB is somewhat retro in its controls..Overall comfort and ride goes to the MB...clearly I could go on..but noone probably really cares anyhow..so to sum it...I am going with the MB this time around..and I will enjoy the M3 for my new fun car when it arrives in early FEB.

I bought an X5 for my wife when they first came out.
We test drove them all....if you want a compact truck and you're not off-raoding the X5 is an excellent truck.

BMW engines are stronger that MBs BMW produce more hp per liter ML350 is actually 3.7l and produces 232hp ML320 was 3.2l and produced 215hp ML500 is 5.0l and it is 288hp ML55 is 5.4l and it is 342hp X5 3.0l is 225hp X5 4.4i is 290hp X5 4.6is is 340hp X5 is lighter than ML, so there is no way ML is faster. I know and 100% sure that X5 4.6is is faster than ML55 AMG X5 4.6is was fastest SUV until Porsche Cayanne(sp?)

I like SUV and I will get one for sure. SUVs are not bigger gas guzzlers than a car. My m3 eats same amount of gas as my friends 4.0l Grand Cherokee. I like SUV cause they are rommier, and I like to look at other cars from top. And they are more chill to drive than regular cars.

I will comment on the speed issue of the 2 SUV's I drove today. They both feel soft..Which is to be expected..the suspension is set up for comfort. The idea of driving a top-heavy rig like this at anything over freeway speeds doesn't sound like anything i would even attempt. There are a lot of other vehicles that are perfect for going fast..The problem is..that the 911 just isn't very good in the snow..and I don't think i would want to tow my boat behind it..I also stopped by the Lexus dealer today..but didn't take a test drive.I would assume it drives and performs just like the german.I think in this segment of SUV's it comes down to personal preference in styling. If I made an error with the M-B..i'll post any issues here and maybe the next guy might choose a different truck.
