BMW or Mercedes?

I have to get a new SUV this week..i've narrowed it down
to either the ML350 or the X5 3.0

Anyone have any good things or bad things to say about either of them?

stanton 01-14-2003 05:17 PM

X5 Is the best! :thumbsup

best perfomance, safety , and looks much slicker!:2 cents:

Amputate Your Head 01-14-2003 05:18 PM

i like the Lexus....

Trafficbrokercom 01-14-2003 05:19 PM

Get the Porsche Cayenne S.

I don't know if it's already available in the states.

Fucking nice car. By far the best SUV out there.

I drove it a couple of times until I flew to the States for the expo.

If you have to choose between the X5 and the ML get the X5. Though I am driving a Mercedes AMG E55 myself I would prefer the BMW for the SUV.

Greetings

Mike

I drive in a ML350..... I love it, very reliable.... just kinda expensive to get work done to it.... (only problem so far is that my air manifold gasket had a leak..... no biggie)

drops 01-14-2003 05:28 PM

ML 350? you mean ML 320...

I have it. I like it..

Interlude 01-14-2003 05:33 PM

X5 has beaten out the ML in virtually every head-to-head review I"ve read. In general, Mercedes is a bit more luxurious but less of a "driver's car" than BMW. I drove several models of both brands before choosing a BMW, and haven't looked back.

IF you are in a market for an suv please pick one from the list below. Everything else is crap...

All of them are ugly, nothing but a bunch of station wagons with a lift kit:thumbsup

PostWhore 01-14-2003 06:40 PM

ML350 repleaced ML320

get X5 4.4i atleast, do not get 3.0, no enought power.

If you got more cash get 4.6is or Range Rover. (Range rover has engine from X5 4.4i)

Of course there is a chance it might say,..i prefer german engineering, attention to detail in design,.safety, handling and resale.. If i want people to look at me..i''ll drive one of my 911's..probably the twin turbo..but..hey thanks for the advice..

get the X5, cuz the benz looks gay. It seems like its a confused minivan. Or a pregnant roller skate. Either way its boring, get an X5 or suffer regret later 'down the road',

Yeah isn't it nice to own a concept car???

Why don't you get Cadillac 16
V16, 1000hp, 1000pounds of torque

snappy machine..but i am looking for something to replace a mercury mountaineer..something that will do well in the snow. And something that will do a bit better than the 15mpg that the mountaineer does. The Cayenne is a decent SUV..but as a long time Porsche owner..i am not at all thrilled over the fact that Porsche is even in the SUV market.

PostWhore 01-14-2003 07:45 PM

Speaking of concept car, go for X5 Le Mans
700 bhp (514 kW) and has a torque of 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) at 5000 rpm, which accelerates from a stand-still to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Top speed is 278 km/h (173 mph).

Those new Cadillac 16's are off the hook crazy. I read a review on those guys and I think they might actually build this one.

V-16.... Crazyness

NBDesign 01-14-2003 09:58 PM

BMW is rated the safest on the market... at least they were a year or two ago. If that means anything. Might if you have kids.

Pornwolf 01-14-2003 10:06 PM

The Range Rover is the best out of that list but it's not worth the price. The Lexus is a nice one but it's not worth it either. If you are replacing a Mounteneer you are better off buying an ML 430 with about 27,000 miles on it. Most benzes don't really 'break in' for about 30,000 miles and the dealer pre-authorized reseller has a high standard for used Benzes so you don't have to worry about much. The best part is it's probably 10 to $15,000 less than a new one. The style isn't changing so no one will know the difference.

The X5 has a terrible repair history. Skip it.

But... if you are just plain trying to be a big baller, get the range.

mrbling 01-14-2003 10:07 PM

"Top speed is 278 km/h (173 mph). "

HAHAHAH A Minivan that can go up to 173 mph

next thing you know you'll be lowering the car and putting up wings!

who's up for family street racing!!

NBDesign 01-14-2003 10:07 PM

Buy a Jeep!

greedinc 01-14-2003 10:08 PM

go with the x5 man, definetely, awesome car... range rovers are really great too.

night,

Rich 01-14-2003 10:13 PM

In that price range go with the Range Rover man. At least test drive one before you make up your mind.

hmm you are suggesting Range Rover, but saying that X5 has terrible repair history??
What kind of drugs are you taking??
Range Rover uses BMW engine. X5 uses Range Rover chassis.
If we are talking about reability, you better check that. Mercedes' reability/qiuality went down really badly

can we lower our vehicles properly, please?? fuck. get an alignment, hoser :)

i don't think the cayenne is available in the us yet, but i could be wrong. if you're going to get an suv like that, get the G series mercedes. kinda like a hummer, and the way an suv should be: tough & off-road capable. if you try hard enough, you can get an armored version :Graucho

Mr Pheer 01-14-2003 10:56 PM

Why not get an H2 with the luxury package. its in pretty much the same price range and has a very nice ride. And if you need to go offroad, it wont have any problems whatsoever.

During my return home to the US for the holiday season this year, more than anything else I was struck with one important fact about America: People are Stupid.

There is no more ridiculous trend than that towards SUVs. Maybe 1% of the people who drive these ridiculous monstrosities need them. The rest are wasteful, dangerous, and vain.

Some thoughts...

1. SUVs guzzle gas. Why pay a ton to fill the tank of a vehicle that is far larger and heavier than you need? In doing so, you fund all those nasty arab countries that the US hates so much, including money that will end up in the hands of actual enemies. Plus, if anyone still cares about that sort of thing, you screw the environment.

2. SUVs have increased the amount of road deaths. While an SUV is safe for its driver, it is far more likely to kill anyone in the cars it collides with. Nice.

3. SUVs are priced like luxury cars, but are only a bit more comfortable than their ancestors. I am talkin about vehicles like the GMC Jimmy or Chevy Suburban. Before this ridiculous fad, we realized the "Utility" part over the status symbol part. If you want a status symbol, either get a sports car with some power, or a luxury car with a cushy ride.

I drove from New Hampshire to Baltimore, recently. I went through New Jersey, etc. There were more SUVs and minivans on the road than all other vehicles... and the number went up as we got to more populated areas. The people who need a utility vehice, up in rural NH, don't bother with these materialistic fasion statements. If you buy an SUV, especially a "luxury" SUV, you're being had. Congratulations.

I totaly agree... I think most people riding them are 40's year old pussies who don't even need them. They need to feel bigger & powerful (or whatever it is) on the roads just to secure themselve and ruin our environment.

I never, ever saw a SUV with more than two people in it actually...

My business partner has a BMW X5 4.6is
He traded in his Range Rover, which is the model just prior to the current one.
He says there is absolutely *no comparison* between the two - the BMW SHITS on the RR.

i would tend to agree with you on most of those points. the whole deal behind the gas-guzzling nature and the sad fact that they never go off road has brought us the wonderous, absofuckinglutely useless suv's such as the honda cr-v and it's kin. there is no way in hell i can even bring myself to udnerstand those. if you're going to wuss out on the suv, get a minivan, lamer.

i also feel it is quite unfortunate that the majority of people don't use the suv's capabilities, most of them are for suburbanites on an ego trip. but they aren't a total waste, they do have their practical uses. take the excursion for example. that thing can pull a monstrous load, say a huge travel-trailer, and the people inside can ride quite luxuriously. and you might be surprised how well some of the newer ones ride, even off road.

although i'm proud to say that i've never owned an suv or 4wd truck that didn't get it's fair share of off-road rompage. my first suv, the first day i owned it i bashed the bumper apart off-roading (i used to live out in the country). hell, i even romped vehicles that weren't mine (lease returns and my dad's truck... he didn't appreciate that much).

in the end, i wouldn't judge every single person that owns an suv, they definitely have their place. i agree though, it is sad nobody uses them for their intended purpose. i would assume you don't get a lot of snow where you live, either for 4wd. :):)

My uncle has a Rangerover,it's great car, a real beast, not a fake one. It's not overpriced if you compare it with the rest big SUV's. It worths the money and it will be a strong, reliable car even after 20 years. It has expensive service and a repair means serious cash each time, but hopefully you won't have to deal with these very often. I like the mercedes too, you don't see this car than often in the street.

gothweb 01-15-2003 05:48 AM

Note: I don't mean to say that everyone who has, or wants an SUV is an idiot. Just 99% of them... and the trend that represents. ;)

Minte 01-15-2003 06:47 AM

I have arranged test drives this morning of both selections..As to taking it off road,,it will probably never go off road..in 3 years the mountaineer never has..but for hauling a boat out of the lake..and for winter driving..we get snow in Wisconsin..I think the SUV is the perfect choice. The cayenne will be available on March 15th here..I'll certainly take a look at one..but seriously i wouldn't consider it.
Since i've had the mountaineer..it has less than 22,000 miles on it in 3 years..so this is clearly not a daily ride.My wife will drive it mostly.I have a decent stable of fun cars allready..and in less than 3 weeks i'll post some pics of my new M3..Its allready been shipped :)
