On this issue I know 3 things;

1. Building anything Muslim that close to ground zero is just asking for trouble.

2. Not all Muslims are terrorists. (needs to be said since some people think otherwise)

3. This is a good opportunity for the USA to make a gesture of goodwill to the world and the Muslim community. They (the Muslim world, Middle East, all of it) doesn't seem capeable of such gestures our way (to the westerners, US, Canada, GB, etc), such gestures of kindness are up to us.

It's hard to boast about being a land of freedom and then deny people something based on their religion, no? I do think it would be smarter if they built whatever it is they want to build just a little further away from the hot zone though. Give and take and all that.

Been lurking for a long time, but figured I'd chime in since I live by there.

Theres a few strip clubs, couple of fast food places, few office buildings and thats it. Its not that special of a neighborhood and I don't mean it in any demeaning sense at all, i used to hang out around there in college.

The local community convened a few meetings and even though there were both sides of the opposition present, they still voted to allow them to move in.

So if the people that have to live with it are okay with having a mosque there, what right does anyone else have in saying they shouldn't build it there?

The real tragedy and the shit that really pisses me off is how no one is discussing how fucking embarrassing it is that we still haven't built a memorial. 9 years of bullshit from the state house and nonsense competitions. It irritates me when I see people taking pictures of the site because its been way too long and they should be taking pictures of some kind of memorial.

There has been progress though...

Theres a few strip clubs, couple of fast food places, few office buildings and thats it. Its not that special of a neighborhood and I don't mean it in any demeaning sense at all, i used to hang out around there in college. The local community convened a few meetings and even though there were both sides of the opposition present, they still voted to allow them to move in. So if the people that have to live with it are okay with having a mosque there, what right does anyone else have in saying they shouldn't build it there? The real tragedy and the shit that really pisses me off is how no one is discussing how fucking embarrassing it is that we still haven't built a memorial. 9 years of bullshit from the state house and nonsense competitions. It irritates me when I see people taking pictures of the site because its been way too long and they should be taking pictures of some kind of memorial. There has been progress though... I can't post URLS but you can look up the progress on the memorial site through google.

So they have hype up bullshit like this. Its not at ground zero its two blocks away. Ground zero is where there is still a big fucking hole which really is the sin. Also righties are you big on the constitution or not because if its only when it suits you then your really not for it.
