Let me use your elementary school logic. If you support the building of the community center, then you're a terrorist! Man, it would suck to be as dumb as you.

the comical part is when i see a person so determined in their beliefs that they are unwilling to have any kind of reasonable discussion and instead start calling people stupid. yes, there are a few people here that resort to name calling and you are becoming one of them. i guess you dont have thick enough skin to take these insults and find tossing them back easier than defending or debating your points. thats surprising considering you that you consider yourself to be so intelligent. how will you ever uncover what the deeper reasons are to why a person feels a certain way about a topic or issue if you close the door on conversation by calling the other person stupid. to me, that just sounds like an excuse to close the door on further debate. when you close your mind to opinions other than your own, you close your mind to learning.. that doesnt sound like an intelligent person to me... ![]() btw, how could i like or not like you? i dont even know you... this is an internet board.. dont take it so seriously... ![]() . |

Or a logical argument appealing to the emotions of those killed in 9/11, as opposed to calling someone emotional keywords just because you don't have an argument.

yes, there are a lot of people here that are stuck on arguing the facts that are given to them by the media, whether right or left.. yes, there are people here that are unable to have any type of logical debate.. however, there are people here that i have seen you attack that are willing to discuss issues in some sort of a reasonable manner.. i dont waste my time calling people out, but once in a while i will just make some ridiculous post to get their goat or get them heated.. this method is way more fun than trying to have a conversation with someone that will just never get it.. vendzilla is like this. you are never going to change that guys mind about anything that he has seen on fox news. to him its gospel.. there are others just like him and thats just the way it goes... calling a person stupid in a thread every now and then is ok and usually pretty funny when deserved, but go back and look at your posts... you have a history of doing this to any person that doesnt agree with you.. and who are you to decide what is logical and what is not.. sometimes logic has nothing to do with it. there are people that are against this building that are smart and dont have a racist bone in their body, but maybe their whole family was destroyed on 911 and no matter what you preach to them or whatever valid argument you have, they are never going to change their mind. does that make them a racist or not logical? i think it does not. they just have outside factors that influence their ideas.. if the media would stop and take the time to really force people to discuss why they are against this building instead of just trying to get a feeding frenzy, they would probably find that the average person against this building doesnt have all the facts, only what they have been fed.. this is the greatest tragedy in our society today. we no longer have open discussions about the world we live in.. and its because of people like you that resort to calling people stupid and making them feel insecure about sharing their ideas... anyway, this is a message board and i'm sure you dont act like this with your friends or in public when having conversations with people that dont share your same opinions... . |

Fareed Zakaria's August 6th article makes a pretty good case that allowing the cultural center/mosque represents an opportunity to make a potent statement in the ongoing effort to "prevail in the battle of ideas and to discredit radical Islam."
There are good points made throughout the article, but these two in particular caught my eye, because they capture why we really can't simply dismiss working with Islamic clergy as part of the strategy for combating Islamic fundamentalist militarism around the world: Quote:
Quote:
Accordingly, we really have no choice but to work through non-radical (which is a broader category than "moderate," IMO) Islamic clergy in order to reach the broader Muslim world and implore Muslims to reject radicalism. While it might be satisfying on some level to some people to think that the non-Muslim world can simply beat the Muslim world into a corner through military action and political or economic sanction, it's pure folly to believe such is actually possible. For those who say "it isn't about the mosque, it is about the location of the mosque," I understand where you are coming from, but the world is absolutely filled with insensitivity to one group or another. IMO, inflamed sensibilities are not a particularly solid basis for public policy, and it is far better to require people get over their hurt feelings than to decide matters of policy in deference to those hurt feelings. I'm no fan of Fred Phelps and his troop of funeral-protesting cretins, for instance, but the courts have determined that they have a First Amendment right to be utter assholes, provided that they honor the requisite time/place/manner restrictions while being such assholes. (I know what some of you are thinking as you read that last bit, but trust me, you will not prevail in court trying to apply such time/place/manner restrictions to a place of worship itself.) I may not like it, but I accept as a fact of life that Phelps and Friends will continue to be the sort of assholes that they are, and I will have to content myself with laughing at their inane bullshit. By the same token, many people may not like the idea of an Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero, but as a matter of law and public policy, I think they are going to have to either get used to the idea, or get used to waking up pissed off about it on a daily basis.

Ah, that may well be true. Honestly, this situation isn't something I've been following very closely, other than the underlying philosophical debate and potential policy ramification aspects of it, so I'm pretty much in the dark about the funding and other logistics that are likely to determine whether the proposed center gets built or not.

Russell Simmons has taken a public stand in support of Park51, the Muslim community center whose planned construction in lower Manhattan has become a national controversy. The Associated Press reports that the hip-hop mogul, who lives across the street from the site of the World Trade Center, adorned several of his top-floor apartment windows with messages of tolerance regarding the so-called ?Ground Zero mosque.?
Six of Simmons? window displays spell out the word ?COEXIST? using religious symbols drawn from traditions including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism. Another cites Mark 12:31, the New Testament passage instructing Christians to ?love thy neighbor as thyself.? Two more window displays read ?USA = FREE? and ?IT?S THE LAW.? ?The fact that it is a public discussion, that there?s so many against it is what I think is disappointing to me, that so many people don?t know that we founded our country on the First Amendment,? Simmons told the AP. ?It?s for Jews, it?s for Christians, it?s for African-Americans and other non-Muslims to stand up and protect the rights of the Muslims involved in this debate?. It?s an American principle, it should offend every American.? |

Mayor Michael Bloomberg delivered an impassioned speech on religious freedom at a Ramadan dinner at Gracie Mansion Tuesday night, declaring there's "nowhere in the five boroughs of New York City that is off limits to any religion."
View Full Image Press Pool New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg speaks during a dinner in observance of Iftar at Gracie Mansion on Tuesday Mr. Bloomberg, speaking at an annual Iftar dinner, said he understood the impulse to find an alternative location for the proposed mosque and Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero. But this kind of "compromise," as Gov. David Paterson and others have suggested, will not the end the debate, he said. Bloomberg's Speech "There is nowhere in the five boroughs that is off limits to any religion." Read the full text of Bloomberg's speech. "The question will then become, how big should the 'no-mosque zone' be around the World Trade Center site? There is already a mosque four blocks away. Should it be moved?" the mayor said. "This is a test of our commitment to American values. We have to Mayor Michael Bloomberg delivered an impassioned speech on religious freedom at a Ramadan dinner at Gracie Mansion Tuesday night. Journal Community Mr. Bloomberg also defended Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the spiritual leader of the proposed center, while acknowledging that some of the imam's statements have stoked controversy. The mayor said, "Let me declare that we in New York are Jews and Christians and Muslims, and we always have been. And above all of that, we are Americans, each with an equal right to worship and pray where we choose." When the mayor finished speaking, the largely Muslim audience of nearly 100, including leading organizers of the proposed mosque, rose to their feet and applauded. Guests were dining on hummus, tomato soup and lamb kebab. "Mayor Bloomberg's speech embodied the values and the mores that we as Muslim Americans live and cherish," said Sharif El-Gamal, the center's developer. Journal CommunityDISCUSS “Bloomberg's speech is what makes America great. He gains nothing politically from this. He is clearly speaking from his beliefs which are right on: NYC (where I work) and NY (where I live) is where people of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome. The opportunity in NYC is what has made America and that city great and strong for 160 years. ” —Jed Shivers Daisy Khan, wife of the imam and one of the lead organizers, said, "I was almost in tears." Across the street from Gracie Mansion, protester Marion D.S. Dreyfus, said she was deeply disappointed with Mr. Bloomberg for supporting the mosque and sponsoring the dinner. "There is no responsibility of a Jewish mayor of a largely Jewish town to give an Iftar dinner," said Ms. Dreyfus, a college teacher. "The fact that he is says again that he is sticking a stick in our eye." Another protester, Andrew Upton of the Bronx, said, "If the Muslim community in New York was really respectful, they would not push this mosque down at Ground Zero. And if they're not respectful…we shouldn't just sort of suck it up and say, 'Come on over and have dinner with us.' " |
