We need to get out of there. That place will never be civilized unless we police it forever. We've got bigger issues than sending people to die over there. There's no end goal that makes any sense. We're not going to pave Afghanistan and set up Walmarts. The instant we leave, the whole place falls right back into chaos again. There is no "win" to be had there. Afghanistan is like a weird, unconquerable Bermuda Triangle zone or some shit.

And to borrow from the Pres.... if the war is "bigger than one man",.... then why are we still "looking for Bin Laden"? We're never going to ferret out a scattered bunch of dirty Afghani / Saudi hippies. The Taliban isn't going anywhere either. That's why they're called 'fanatics'... they're fanatical. Stick a fork in it, this war is done.

Unless,..... someone steps up and says something like, "Well, there's actually some interests we have there that we need to stick around for....." or something. Just sayin'.

I know I posted this poll, but I really don't know how to respond to it myself.

My belief is that the US shouldn't be in MOST countries we currently have troops in.

If we pull out now however, the Taliban (who also control Saudi Arabia by the way), will likely step in and take over. The women will be repressed, education will be virtually non-existent (especially for girls), and terrorists will thrive - possibly using the land to train for attacks against US troops, home and abroad, and likely even against civilians here in the states!

If we pull out under Obama the haters will call him a loser, a quitter, a weakling, etc., and if we get attacked again, and it is traced back to Afghanistan - even remotely - he will be vilified.

On the other hand, there are lots of places on Earth where people hate the US, and where intolerance is the way of the land, so should we be everywhere?

It is unlikely that a stable, non-corrupt government can be formed there in the near future, and it is even more likely that when we DO leave - WHENEVER that is - that the Taliban will reclaim power.

In the end, it does appear to be a huge waste of money, time, and blood - like most wars and occupations.

I'll vote "to leave" just to choose something, and also so I can see the poll results so far...

Just want to add, I have nothing against the Afghani people whatsoever. I think it sucks that they're stuck in such a hostile place with so many hardcore religious lunatics in control of the weapons.

I wasn't thinking the Afghanis in Afghanistan were reading GFY, if that's what you're asking.... but there are Afghanis outside of their country aren't there?

I don't know. Are TV's and radios still banned over there? I think that was a Taliban thing, along with alcohol, and women couldn't go out alone, and needed to have their faces covered at all times, etc.. Has anything changed?

I do not believe that these people want change. thus why it has been like that for thousands of years. not everyone on the planet has to buy into the western mentality to be excepted.

in their eyes who is to say they feel repressed? some people can look at the western way of living and call us repressed. how often to people in the west stop and smell the roses anymore? it is just go go go alot of people forget to enjoy their lives.

if they want to sit in a mud hut and pray everyday that is their choice.

i am tired of the way the western world tries to shove our way of living down everyone's throat.

I mostly agree with you, but when you can't leave your hut by yourself, you are not allowed to be educated, you have to wear a veil to cover your face at all times, etc... it seems, at least to me, that it would be pretty difficult to "smell the roses".

But I DO agree with you in the majority of cases where the "western" way of life supersedes the culture of another place. Good point.

that is really their problem. people have to be proactive within their own groups, families and communities for any long lasting change to happen.

to change a culture someone within it has to rise up and want change. if they are to ignorant or afraid to do anything about it than their is no hope for them in the first place.

i am not totally sure about the educated part. i firmly believe there are people who are meant to be stupid and people who are not. that in why is some circumstances people can strive to become successful out of the worst circumstances. and other people who have it on a silver platter can blow it all.

i think it is bullshit how humans try to save everyone. we are human not everyone is meant to be equal. we should indeed have equal rights. but if people are not willing to stand up for their own rights or take risks to get them than again there is no hope for them anyway.

majority of the world is weak and should be controlled to some degree. even if they had 100% equal opportunity certain cultures of people would still manage to blow it. it is ingrained in them. better to let them die off so the gene pool gets strong.
