Dan Brown worst writer EVER!

Seriously, if you think this guy is a good writer you have never read a good book in your life. I thought DVC was laughable (I couldn't even finish it, that's how bad it was, and I almost always finish a book once I am at least halfway through). Someone recently gave me Angels and Demons and it is somehow even worse. Pathetic writing style, cardboard characters, James Bond type near death escapes, impluasible plot turns, inaccurate facts. OMG, is our society that dumbed down that we consider Dan Brown evem a decemt writer?

/rant.

BTW, the movies are just as fucking bad.

I wanted to see just how bad it could get. I picked up the DVC because so many people were raving about it and told me I just had to read it. I'll admit, the subject matter was intriguing (although not original). But the actual writing was putrid. The dialogue and exposition was so bad I was laughing out loud at parts I shouldn't have been.

I read A&D out of morbid curiosity. Again, the subject matter intrigued me, but when I got to the last 1/4 of the book I was rolling my eyes and sighing. I've never read another word he's written and won't. He is absolutely the worst writer I've come across. DVC could have been a spellbinder if he had any writing chops at all. It's a shame that subject matter that tends to intrigue and fascinate people wound up in the hands of such a hack.

Well seems like you disagree with 90% of population then. I found davinci code and A&D pretty good books, easy read to relax your brains from work.

Alltough his last book, The Lost Symbol was pretty shitty in comparison to his first books

If you want to read an excellent book on the same subject, written decades ago by a true master and professional in his field, for people who actually like to think when they read, pick up Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. It isn't an easy read by any stretch of the imagination, but much more fulfilling and complex.

I doubt 90% of the population think Dan Brown is a good writer. But even if they did it would just work towards proving my point. Fatfoo's erotic stories are better written.

edit// and if his books are worse than fatfoo's erotic stories how on earth did they even get published?

I don't know.... ever read anything by L. Ron Hubbard? I think he could probably give Brown a run for his money re: being the worst writer among best sellers.

For a good book that covers a complex construct along the lines of what Brown was shooting for in his work, give New York Trilogy by Paul Auster a shot. The first story in that, City of Glass, is my favorite. It combines the device of an unreliable narrator (one of Herman Melville's favorite tricks) with an exploration of the nature of identity, and the relationship between perception, knowledge, language and sanity.

Auster is a great line-by-line writer, but what really gets me is the depth of the world he creates in stories like City of Glass. You have to do some serious thinking/planning, and probably a hell of a lot of research, just to conceive of a story like that in the first place, much less to execute it in a way that is intellectually compelling and viscerally entertaining at the same time.

All writers are different and so are their styles. I enjoyed reading his books but wouldn't say he was a great writer. On the other hand, books like The Stand are really excellent reads. I happen to really enjoy the Dark Tower Series...and well Ken Follet writes a damn good book. Ever read The Key To Rebecca? I would suggest that for sure. http://www.ken-follett.com/bibliogra...o_rebecca.html

How about Life Of Pi by Yann Martel? Some people absolutely hate the book - while I enjoyed it.

Sorry but I think Stephen King is another horrible writer, though not nearly as bad as Dan Brown. His writing style isn't bad, it's just that 90% of his stories are dumb. I have enjoyed very few of his books (I think the only ones I liked were Dolores Clairborne, Hearts in Atlantis and Needful Things). To anyone who ever read The Shining, it is the only movie that I would say is better than the book, but that is mainly due to Stanley Kubrick masterful directring.

That's probably the only reason why his books sell like they do. Because people think they are reading something new and controversial, and that they are picking up valuable information and cluture, inside an "entertaining" story.

Okay... then let us hear who you think IS a good writer. And don't reach into the old well used grab bag of classical writers either. Everyone already knows they are good.

John Le Carre is a masterful writer (Shakespeare compared to Brown), one of my all time favorites. He still puts out good novels that are entertainng, but subtle. But they aren't "easy to read" and "relax the brain" like someone else put it.

Umberto Eco and Gore Vidal are two other contemporary writers I enjoy. Dan Brown writes for people too lazy to read real literature. He makes John Grisham sound like Faulkner.

The Davinci Code is a dreadful book. The plot was copied almost verbatum from academic texts and the structure of the book was very annoying.
But I finished reading it. I had a long flight delay and there was nothing much else to do

I've read Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum and it's a great and challenging read.
I discovered Eco when I read The Name Of The Rose. Great book too, and the film wasn't too bad.

Stephen King I read as a kid and thought The Shining was ok, but he has really gone downhill since he came off the coke.

agree on the dan brown comments that he is a dreadful writer...but america loves him...its the need to not think that helps. i read dv code all the way through and found that, for a thriller, it wasn't very thrilling. but i did enjoy his historic references to religion and its inner workings. but you had to wade through all that crap writing to get to it. on a+d, i read the whole book on a flight from europe (amazed at the wretched prose) and had two pages to go when the plane landed. i've yet to finish it....just didn't care enough about the characters....and couldn't bear two more pages of his crap. haven't seen the movies.

I'll be checking out Foucault's Pendulum.

Stephen King was good when I was a kid. Ditto Tom Clancy. I would be bored to tears by them now.

Kurt Vonnegut has been my all time fave author. And 100 Years of Solitude by Marquez is my fave book.

I just picked up Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace that I'm anxious to start.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this.
