Cool tropical places to live?

My girlfriend and I want to move somewhere cool and buy a house. I really would like to live back in hawaii but don't believe in paying taxes to support things that I don't believe in. So I'd rather not have the IRS take my house or some shit.
We would really like to live off the grid, anyone got any tropical suggestions not in the us and that you can get alot of bang for your buck?

usually tropical places are not cool. Usually warmer. But maybe the Caribbean will be warm at least. I heard the Bahamas has been inundated by Jamaica and Haiti

I love St. Maarten personally. Not over developed but still everything you need is there. I visited Great Exuma Bahamas 2 years ago and it was absolutely gorgeous but very quiet outside of the resort area.

If you like mild weather check out Aruba and the surrounding areas. Very very nice down there.

yeah I ask my wife often if we can move to Japan or somewhere on the other side of the rainbow, it frustrates me too, but I have come to the conclusion that you can't fight the system...and leaving your country when the rest of the world would love to come here and make money does not make sense. Hawaii is amazing if you can afford to live their...an apple cost me $3 over there.

I am in the same boat in NYC the cheapest co-op 2b/2b we like is over 300k plus 1,100 maintenance, then you need to send your kids to private school, and we just got into a higher tax bracket....and every fucking thing is going up in price except my 9-5 salary. I still have family here, and enjoy playing the sport of one-wall Handball which is huge in NYC. I think eventually I will end up in Cali or somewhere warm all year myself. hmmmm paradise

Margarita Island is cheap with great beaches and gas is like 17 cents a liter. It's part of Venezuela.

Or check out Fiji. Besides the occasional cyclone, it would be an amazing place to live.

Actually you can live very cheaply on the east side of the big island.. Land is super cheap. You can get acres from 10 - 30k. Plus you can grow all your own food. I don't know where you bought your apple from but the farmers markets are super cheap on the big island. Plus no snakes.. they do have centipedes and an erupting volcano but hey its exciting.

I was in Waikiki last April, yeah its the tourist area, but I seen some high luxury condos over there that I would love to live in...with sick views. See I have lived in a big city all my life so I would be lost in the country or the dead end of the island. So I usually like busy areas it seems. I like walking outside and grab some food close by.

Even if I wanted to move my wife is an RN at one of the top hospitals and no way is she going to make the dough she makes here. I guess I need to find 20 cam wales.

I have to second this. By far my favorite island I have visited so far. Would not mind living there someday

I am not quite sure if I would want to live in some tropical place.
If you want to settle there for good, you'd have to expect to get your house completely ruined by a hurricane at least once. And all the freaking spiders and snakes and other stuff would probably freak me out as well...

Would you know the best places to visit in Fiji for tourists/vacation?

I would consider it to close to the US.
And you will get hit by every hurricane that's headed for the US.
