![]() On 3/5/2010 Kathleen Master on NPR reported:
"Still, even though excessive sexual behavior has been described for a long time, it has yet to be officially recognized by the psychiatrists' bible, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Instead, the category resides in the book's appendix. Dr. Martin Kafka, a Harvard professor and psychiatrist at the med school's McLean hospital, and his colleagues are trying to push it out of that back-of-the book diagnostic "wastebasket." They're proposing that "hypersexual disorder" be added to the next edition of the DSM. Kafka says research over the last few decades supports that idea that these extreme sexual behaviors are symptoms of a mental disorder." and, "Typically, when a new mental disorder gets added into the DSM, its inclusion stimulates a good deal of research on the topic. If accepted, the new definition could help garner more scientific attention." While a more balanced article, the effort to classify "porn" as an addictive subject continues. Don't let the media confuse you with the sensationalism they've created about it based on the Tiger Woods thing. They need to create something intriguing about their story so they sprinkle it with controversy. In reality, it's cut and dry and not controversial and whether it's an addiction or not is easy to determine. In simple terms, if a person wants to quit, needs to quit, may face legal, social or personal health consequences if they don't quit, but can not quit... that's addiction. Do you think that there are people out there who engage in risky or illegal sexual behaviors that negatively affect their lives who want to quit but can't? There are. Therefore, sex addiction is real.

I would group it with anorexia, cutting, food addicts and other attention seeking 'poor me' disorders. People are behaving in a fashion that is disruptive and destructive to their lives. But what they are really doing is avoiding dealing with aspects of their lives that are over whelming to them at that particular time. I am no professional, but I would call it a avoidance strategy rather than a full blown disorder.
Sexual Addiction seems to be the new pop culture buzz for the media who uses it for exploitative headlines. There is so much shame that our culture puts on people for getting caught for being sexually active that it makes it all the more taboo What did Tiger do wrong beyond cheating on his wife? Why hasn't the media been equally as judgmental on Antonio Cromartie who has 7 kids by 6 women in 5 different states. although not married that is a 1000x more irresponsible than anything Tiger did. Yet the media ignores that for the most part. |

there is a lot more to it than you can't just keep it in your pants. Many people do use it as an excuse, for some it is real but definitely not all who claim to be sexual addicts are.

There is a real effort by conservative christians to stop attacking our industry on the basis of obscenity because the tactic hasn't worked.
They have changed tactics and are now trying to have porn reclassified as an addictive substance and come under the regulation of the FDA. If you think 2257 is a bitch, wait to you see what happens if FDA gains regulatory power over our industry. |

Guys want to fuck everything when they're in their teens and 20's and women want to fuck everything when they are in their 30's and 40's. Its nature, not addiction.

it is an addiction or illness, however you want to label it. It is real and should be added.
For those that do not have a mental illness it is very easy to see excuses everywhere and a lot of people diagnosed with mental illness use that diagnosis as a crutch or excuse for behaviors unrelated to their illness (which makes it hard for people who are working to feel more normal to be taken seriously). Tiger Woods may have a sex addiction, I havent sat in a room and talked with him. But then I wonder how many guys wouldn't take advantage of the super stardom and insta-fame he got spaz |
