Fair play to your points & questions... I know your asking for someone to show a reason for that person to be used by you as a content producer. We only shoot for our own content. However, The thing is, these days, surfers are quite happy to have fast effective downloads of hardcore amateur material. Obviously a person for every niche... perfect models with $10000 lighting is great. But you can find that I too, get very very pissed off when I see sites with crap loads of crap content with blurs & clicks from the zoom on cameras. A video camera shouldnt even have a zoom on the fucking thing... The videographer should do some work, get a sweat up & roll around the floor next to the models. I do!
However, as said. There shall always be a market for the cheap crap also. So it is a matter of paying for what you get.

A lot of it of course has to do with the model being shot. And the ability of the photographer to get the most out of her. When the girl is feeling good she will shine. As far as I'm concerned Amputate Your Head is right. Once you learn how a camera works and how to light it up right...one finger on the button is as good as another for sure.

The real "art", if you can call it that to shooting a scene in porn is to get the girl to enjoy herself and feel comfortable doing some crazy shit.

Then you have to know what you're shooting and hit the right angles to accentuate the target audience.

For instance, I started out shooting teen stuff. Lots of panties, cameltoes, shooting down at the girl looking up, etc.
But now I obviously am shooting big tits. Completely different angles and positions to get what that audience is turned on by.

Thankfully, my dick got hard shooting teen and it gets hard shooting big tits. lol

But if you were to tell me to shoot foot fetish, or gay, or tranny, or bondage, etc. I wouldn't have a fucking clue.

My shooting partner and I got into shooting because we were doing magazines and he was tired of art directing stuff where the photographers were a headache and didn't understand what he needed on the page.

If you know web design, you will be able to shoot more commercially useful stuff than shooters who do not know web design.

I'm totally baffled by why you think of picking up the camera as an attack on other people who own cameras. That makes you more of a Photographer, in the pejorative sense, and less of a designer who decided to shoot. I regularly come across photogs who think they are in a contest with everyone from me to anyone who ever borrowed a camera from a friend, when I'd just as soon buy their stuff, even though I can shoot it myself as well.

You are 100% correct.

This is a fact in the design world as well.
What disturbs me is, so many producers are at the bottom of "the edge" versus the top.
AND.... they defend that to the death.

There are designers at both ends as well... but you will never hear low-end designers defending their position as "there's a market for it!".

Why?

Theory: Any level of designer has talent that cannot be replicated by a piece of hardware. The low end might have talent no one wants, and the top end may have talent no one can afford.... but they are always very clearly defined.

The "Photogs"... all group together. Because....

Theory: If anyone ever found out how easy it is to buy a camera and push a button with the basics of photography in mind.... we are ALL done. Let's face it, we've already lost 'Film' & 'Darkrooms'... "

'Market'? Yes.... but why has the BULK of the content producing pool been putting out shit for ten fucking years?

It's time to step up or step down. Owning a high-end camera is no longer a "pass". I've got everything sitting on my secondary desk that ALL of these 'producers' own.... and then some.

I will put $100 on the line right now.... my camera is a higher end model than 60% of the so-called "producers" on this board.

The problem that we forget, it is not just togs, producers, web designers & developers. Its shop owners, rag & bone, food manufacturers. All business have a low & high end of the scale & most of the time, the happiest is the man in the middle.
Every business can go bust, when a high end business goes bust, they know about it!

What camera do you own?
With photo, I use a sony & a canon, of which I prefer my canon. It works great & then occasionally, I find an image can blur slightly even when its set up right. I like perfection when taking picture or film content.

I would never show my mainstream site to Adult people....I have done it in the past and they say oh i want that quality and type of girls, then they want it for peanuts...Some of the shoots were for magazines where the total for the budget was $10k+ for 12 pics ended up used in a spread or 1 pic in an ad campaign.

For mainstream projects I always asked for specific specs so I know the person wont be able to answer and they always get me in contact with the designer...we have a little chat and I know what they need.

Then again there are designers in Mainstream that enjoy celebrity status... when was the last time I read about an Adult based designer in Wired magazine?

maybe it is 'easy' to shoot a few pics however producing content day after day that converts and retains is very difficult.

nope - he's been on here quite a few times looking for work and there's somebody on this board, fairly well known, who didn't get the content he ordered from frank bongiorno.

he has no one to blame but himself, he could have done the same thing quiet did OR he could have found a webmaster to cut him in on a %.

i was just reminded of an (ex) client who once said that $500 a day is the maximum a photographer should earn (incl. equipment etc.) and then showed me the new cars he bought for himself and his wife

all good man. i should have clarified that he mostly shot exclusive *video* for me, very little photos (some, but just for the exterior site and for teasers). yeah, his site is okay, but it's his content (in particular his video content) that shines, or shone (is that a word?). getting the right girls, to do exactly what we wanted, consistently, was a huge headache. he was great at it...

looking forward to check out the new site Todd, cheers.

its like flying airplanes, people will only pay the big money for you when you have loads of hours under your belt.
and experience counts a shitload..
but dont think you're gonna walk in from scratch to shooting top end content, sure selfshot and other amateur niches can be done.
btw, shooting content and making money shooting content are two different things altogether.

Oh sure..... you could argue "contacts". That just a matter of time.
With modern digital cameras it's easy to shoot one decent picture. But shooting porn for a living is a whole lot more than shooting one decent picture. It's about seeing the picture through the lens not copying others, it's about managing and finding good models and it's about understanding what you're shooting.

Owning the gear is the easiest part.

Would you be so kind to share what high end camera you have? Just curious

Good luck with that.

Those are the easy ones to deal with, you send them home.

The hardest to deal with are the ones who trot out the same scene time after time and look plastic and fake.

It takes days to learn how to use a camera and weeks to learn how to light. And years to learn how to manage and direct models to do what you want with some feeling. Anyone who thinks porn is about owning a camera has no clue of what it's about.

AMP can you shoot this quality PORN. Producing the same quality pictures is simple.

And I've seen the best & the worst.... I'm not gonna name names, but you guys are as far & between as good designers. Most of you are just assholes with a fucking camera.

Impress me with SOMETHING.

AMP, Upon reading your original post I just had to throw my 2 cents in here... Now, I intentionally didn't look @ anyone's replies, so hopefully someone will get some enlightenment from mine.

Yes, any jerk-off can press the red button and point it at the pretty pink pussy, but quite frankly shooting takes a lot more than that. There's a vast difference between GWC's (guys with cams) and content providers, and there's an even bigger difference between content providers and directors. You just need to figure out which one are you. In 2004, I got out of the adult content biz, and stopped directing content because of GWC's underselling our market and polluting the net with absolute trash!! What pissed me off even worse is that the webmasters were buying this crap-content (craptent) over true providers that we shooting quality... For me, quality and true entertainment is where it's at. Know your viewer, and know what the viewer doesn't even know... What they wanna see....

Yes, it all sounds like flowered shite, but honestly there's a thought process in the world of shooting. Well... If you're going to shoot something worth viewing!! Shooting is not all about pointing and shooting... You need to think the basics as well... Angles, framing (what are you showcasing, can you get it all in one frame), panning vs zooming and knowing the difference of when to do what. Lighting and the balance of lighting will make or break a shoot. You need to know how to balance perfectly your outdoor lighting with indoor to make the frame look natural. have you crossed the lighting to cancel out shadows? Is there enough blue in your lighting? Does the lights show in the frame off a mirror, window or knick-knack in the room?? Are the positions you're putting your models in lighting friendly? Can you balance lighting and color on spec during a shoot in the event your models move? Doesn't your set have good colors that will bring out the models? Are your models properly made up for film? (makes a big difference).... Are the models wearing HD-Cam friendly attire? (stripes and polka-dots will give your viewer a seizure). Speaking of viewing, who's this for? web viewers? DVD viewers? This can be 2 different animals... Remember web viewers are an average of 14" - 28" from the monitor... DVD viewers are 5' - 12' feet from the TV.... dont wanna make eyes water...

You need to know blocking of not only the models, but you... Where are you going to go while shooting? Nothing looks crappier than seeing some donkey-face GWC shooting himself in a mirror, or the reflection of a window, or seeing his shadow constantly in and out of the frame.

Oh and visual senses aren't your only base to cover.. Now you must think audio... I wanna give a serious bollocking to CP's and GWC's who's sound is like a fucking wind-tunnel... there's nothing more distracting to the viewer than hearing that empty house echo during a shoot... And even worse (I've seen this a lot) that the sound and video aren't properly synched up....

The talent... Yeah, you can be the big ass-hole director, but if you're shooting long term, that will get old fast, and word will get out that you're difficult to work with. (models talk). So you have to know how to draw the talent in. Make them happy and comfortable that they're there while getting everything you need from them. Most Directors and CP's know that "The client" (webmaster) is a picky lil baby, but knows little to nothing about what goes on with the set. So not only do you have to get out of the talent what he/she wants you have to know better than your "The client" (webmaster) what they need. Now you must asses the personality of your talent... So while they're filling out their 2257's you take that 10-15 mins to get to know them... Type cast them so you can figure out a pulse, rhythm, and character for your production... Also, remember they're human beings... They have problems, dramas, and issues like anyone else. So you need to show a bit of care as well without disrupting the flow of your shoot. I tend to empathize... We've all been down and out before... we've all been nervous before... Also, you must know the biggest pussies, babies and divas are your male talent... And if you're working with new male talent like a couple you must be patient so they can get mr. wiggly to work right... Otherwise your shoot is gone!! Yes, you can give them viagara and without knowing their medical history kill them on your set and violate FATA laws. Without Viagara all my talent had a 96% success rate due to my methods of making talent feel at ease.... Tired yet???

CP's and GWC's shoot and say, "We'll fix it in post". But once it's shot... It's shot... Get what you get and don't get upset... A good director shoots to and for the edits... Yes... Post production, the boards... This is where we can get real picky... whether it be 24, 30, 60 and so on you should always cut to the frame... Use creativity in your cuts and transitions (wipe out to a butt hole and open to a mouth in the next scene, etc). You must know how to tweak sound, balance it out, fix lighting issues if needed (I hate seeing people shooting stills in my videos DONT DO IT!!!!), then color corrections if you need to do so as well.... You should be going frame by frame, not just playing it through... Cut out "house sounds" you should be able to cut video to the frame and sound to the 100th of a frame... Oh, now you render for DVD, or WEB, do you know what compressions to use? Frame rate? etc?

I can go on, and perhaps one day I will go on and write a book on the subject... So yes, AMP, there's a bit more to it...

Thank you!!! Much Appreciated... This methodology and manner of thinking helped me out quite a bit for the mainstream.... If you can shoot adult content right, you can shoot ANYTHING!!! People just don't realize the work that goes into it. Those 3-4 hours on the set are more draining than 12 hours on a flight deck... But invigorating all the same!!! Quality control, Creativity, a keen eye for attention to detail is the key to successful shooting... Unfortunately, I just wasn't one for the politics and webmaster games of chasing my money, so I moved on, but I'm back, wide-eyed and hopeful that somethings have possibly changed...

Ok I'll bite. Here's one that's pretty much straight out of the camera except for watermark & border. I'm not a big fan of "studio lighting" since I can't figure that shit out for the life of me. I prefer natural daylight. Doesn't sell as well as some chick taking a dick up her butt, but I enjoy shooting this style.

Who the fuck cares! Get a fucking camera and have at it. Funny how someone saves 1500 dollars gets a rebel and a couple of alien b's and they think they are now a shooter. Being a photochop master does NOT make you a good photographer. And I'm sorry that whoever you are working for doesnt have good shooters. Its gotta suck having your job.

God I wish this guy had to shoot on film he would be puzzled. Un-informed people like you make me laugh. Can you say job security.
