Is life any decent in Costa Rica ?

Heard you can get citizenship if you deposit $150,000 in a Costa Rican bank account and stay there for 5 years.

Last I heard it was 60,000. There are different ways too if I recall. One is also for hiring so many natives.

CR sort of sucks, been here a year, the cost of everything wasn't that cheap to begin with and keeps going up. If you wanna live like a white guy, it won't be too cheap. Only thing that's cool is cheap drugs and whores, but hell even that can get kinda old after a while lol. Also, no need to burn all that cash to get your papers, just abuse the tourist visa like everyone else.

i've been living in CR for 2+ years and life is both (decent and different).

this is a 3rd world country, remember that, and although it has many modern amenities.. those things are mostly in the "gringo" areas of of the country, or areas frequented by tourists (coastal resorts)

the dollar-to-colon exchange is $1:560(colones) depending on the day.. most expats don't live like locals, thus you can pay the same/more than in the states.

local food is excellent, local living can teach u humility and appreciation for the luxuries that are readily available in the states.. you can have both here in CR, if you know how to work it.

also, you don't have to be "scared-shitless" to put your money in the bank here.. just don't put all your eggs in one basket.. there are many rich people in costa rica with more than $150,000 in the local banking systems, believe that.

Residency isn't as easy as transfering money over, the process is a pain in the ass.

LOL at people who think Costa Rica banks are unsafe yet bank in the USA... None of my banks needed a bailout this year.

Costa Rica is a shit hole. Tourist trap areas are maintained, but you step off beaten track and will find shit and garbage everywhere. They shit and throw garbage in the sea, even. I'm traveling around the world rather than having it anchored in one place, but while it's nice to visit, it's nowhere near anything where I would want to live. If you want decent lifestyle, look at civilized countries instead.

For the most part you just need to prove an income of $1000 US per month and they'll be happy to have you

It's hard to compare them. I like Bocas del Toro better than most of Costa Rica's beach towns, but if we are talking Panama City, it's cool but for the price I'd rather just live in the united states.

Costa Rica is the only latin american country with a middle class... Panama is all about the haves and have-nots. If you aren't running a gray area business or are staying away from the USA for personal/tax/legal reasons, I see no reason to live in PC.

and you are right, PTY is expensive.. i spend a few thousand a month here on rent,food,etc.. makes no sense..

hence why im moving back to USA(san diego most likely), at least im spending $x,xxx a month on rent and food but i get good roads, food, mail system, english, amazon, overnight shipping, 20mbps internet, HDTV, etc etc.. ill miss those colombians , although i can always visit panama once in a while.

heh...i guess things have gotten a little dicey as of late...i was in and out of there 2005 - 2007 and it was very cool, and the venezuelan caribbean is gorgeous and very inexpensive.
there are a few islands you step of the sand into the water and you're swimming around a huge coral reef...i want to go back there. and the andes of venezuela theres a town called merida which is the shit...and the girls...its like they are manufacturing them, they could not all be so freaking hot- of course its a big university town
