I served in Desert Storm, 2nd Armored, U.S. Army. Your not only a fucking idiot, your an ungrateful piece of shit. The thread starter does a great disservice to the brave young men and women fighting currently in Afghanistan and in Iraq, as well as those whom fought during WWII.

My step-father was a young Marine in WWII, and is a very tough old guy to this day, but he would be the first to admit that he and everyone around him was scared as hell. When you see friends wounded and killed, you can't help but cry sometimes.

Since they were involved in close combat, they could see the faces and hear the cries of the enemy troops, and the civilians as well. Even that haunts and scares you.

I served in the Navy for six years, although I was never in combat, however I had many friends that were in combat, and most would mention how terrifying it was at times.

One of the saddest days of my life occurred when several of my friends died in a plane crash during a routine training flight at the base where I was stationed. We heard the plane crash (and at the time didn't know which aircraft it was), but by the time I arrived at the air strip a few blocks away, word had already spread, and there was a large group of people hugging each other and crying, since it was obvious that all aboard had perished.

My roommate at the time was a corpsman, and was among the group that had to recover the bodies and body parts after the fire was extinguished. He was so traumatized by the experience that within six months he was given a medical discharge.

I'm about as anti-war as a person can be, and I was absolutely against the war in Iraq, however I nonetheless respect and honor our people who serve in the military, regardless about how I feel about the war they are in. When I dislike a specific war, I take it up with the politicians that are authorizing and funding it, not the troops.

They are putting their lives on the line for their people, and as far as I know they're good people. I've liked most of them, and I don't think they are bad people at all. Just misguided by a corrupt system, that can take advantage of them based upon their shortcomings. Be it their financial situation, or simply their skill in any other department. I mean, let's face it, you don't need to be a genius to point a gun and pull a trigger. Hell, a bullet from a child kills as well as a bullet from anyone else (yes i'm gonna rip that line from lord of war) So they government will happily pull in these guys, offer them a good paycheck (which really ain't all that good based on what i've seen), skills training, and an education. Then ship them off to get shot at so they can make some money for themselves and their other rich buddies.

I'm just saying these are normal guys over there, and they're getting fucking bombs thrown at them for absolutely nothing. How anyway can come down on them for panicking, cowering down, or even crying out in tears for their mommy is beyond me. Their lives are flashing before their eyes as they look death in the face in that situation. No one can take anything away from them and say they are cowards. it takes a brave man to put himself in that situation. It's really sad that they are put in those boots for what amounts to nothing more than the continuation of manifest destiny.

If you still can't see it, america is the aggressor in this war, and it started way before 9/11. It's just plain silly that young men are over there risking their lives over shit that has nothing to do with them. AS FAR AS THE ANOTHER POST, MY son is RA (E-5)....he had the choice between WHATEVER College he wanted, at no expense to him (yes, rumor has it i made a few dollars in this biz), but he chose to enlist after 9-11.....

I didn't attempt to correlate intelligence with the reactions at all. That was simply your interpretation. All I was attempting to state was that they are normal guys, many of whom joining the army was the best option for. If joining the army seems like a good career chocie to you, then yes, i would venture to bet that you are an idiot on some level. An opinion which is soundly supported in my head by my own personal interaction with several soldiers I've met over the years. I've yet to meet one of them that has blown my mind with their intelligence.
