I need help for severe back pain... suggestions please

I didn't know where else to ask, and GFY is always a good place so... I've had back problems for like the past 20 years but lately it's been getting worse since I'm not as active. Most of the time I can barely stand in a line at like a grocery store for more than 10 minutes before I start getting a sweat and feeling faint from the pain.

Sometimes, every few weeks or so, the lower of my back will just go out. It feels like it becomes disjointed or something. I'm not able to move whenever this happens. Lately there is an additional pain in the middle of my back that feels like something is twisting. Every time I try to move it twists and sends a shock down my spine.

I'm trying to get a prescription for some Vicadin or something. Last time I went to a doctor it cost me $150 for one xray. Are there any online places that someone has tried or other inexpensive suggestions? I browsed a few of the online places and they all look shady.

Thanks

Get the source of the pain fixed.

Far too many persons treat the symptom of pain and figure that since it's gone that everything is okay. In actuality you could be making the situation worse.

Your back plays a vital part of mobility. Respect it and keep it healthy.

There IS no price to high when it comes to your health. You either want to be better or you don't. Solving the problem yourself is not solving it all as you are not a trained physician.

Go to a doctor or deal with it. Most places have a payment option and even if it ends up costing $5 or 600 you aren't spending much if you don't go very often. I don't have insurance because my time between doctors visits are counted in years so it is cheaper for me to pay out of pocket.

It sounds like your here looking for pain meds.

Run don't walk to a good Chiro.

Work on your core it will help support your lower back. Do you have a comfortable chair that you sit in as a webmaster?

You need to get to the root of the problem not cover the symptoms.

It may sound odd but try to learn the planche and your back will never hurt again... search for planche tutorials on youtube, after learning it (6-24 months I'd say, depending on your condition) it should look like this:

Just do not go start seeing some chiropractors. Pain medications are not going to help out much either, they just will mask the issues. If anything see a back doctor or visit someone who works in sports medicine.

Yeah I know there can be some huge debate about chiropractors, yes they are "accepted" now but it really does not make them as healthy as they want you to think they are. There is a damn good reason they see you very often and for long periods of time. If there was any profession (besides shrinks) that can suck so much cash out of people while possibly causing even more damage I would be shocked. Hell I would say try acupuncture before a chiropractor.

I have back issues at times as well. there is a simple exercise you can do to strengthen your lower back. stand on your tiptoes, arms stretched as far above you as possible, and hold that for 30 seconds. Do that a few times every day and it will help greatly.

What I heard, is sit down on edge of bed... put one leg over on your knee and pull it toward you stretching it then lean forward and stretch. Then do other leg the same way, it stretches all your back muscle's out. I actually been doing it, and it seems to have helped alot. Sitting at computer at work all day, then reading GFY all night.. no activity :P

See a doctor, go to the emergency room and use a fake name if you don't have healthcare coverage. Get married and get on your wife's health insurance. Hope you get better...

I suffer with mind numbing back pain 24/7 and have since '91. There is nothing that can be medically done for my problem. I have a standing order for vicodin and morphine patches but I seldom use either...only when I travel or when I must have a certain amount of relief to maintain my sanity. I must not kill the pain entirely as I have to be aware of my movements in an attempt to avoid paralysis. There are pain management classes one can attend to attempt to learn to live with chronic pain. If your problem cannot be medically repaired I suggest that you attend a pain management class. It won't releive you from suffering pain but will help you...to some extent...to learn to live with pain. Truthfully I think about committing suicide virtually every day and have since '91...but for whatever the reasons are I have managed to get through one day at a time and continue to do so.

I have something similar. Doesn't hurt all the time like you but my back has gone out where it partially paralizes me for a moment.

First thing I learned: Never bend and twist- ever ever. That's what makes it "go out".

I've been to the chiro, maybe just my bad luck but the one I went to was a bit of a quack. Tried to sell me supplements and did some electro therapy that seemed to make it worse.

Out of everything the thing that worked best was "postitional release". You don't even need to see a chiro to get it, just find a good massage therapist who has experience doing it. What they do is position your body in different ways to stretch and relax. This greatly improves mobility.

The other thing you should do is take anti-inflamatories (aspirin, advil, aleve, etc- not tylenol) and use an ice pack- 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. It's not comfortable, but the sting of the ice kind of takes away from the pain in your back.

And Date Doc gave some good advice. I wouldn;t start until you're in less pain, but there are a few yoga poses that really help the back. Cat pose, cat lift, and childs pose seem to help alot.

I've had chronic back pain for years.

Most of it is low grade pain that I can cope with, however every so often it is so intense that I can barely walk, and it requires treatment. Chiropractors have caused me more damage than good.

What really seems to work is ultrasound massage. Seek out a good sports medicine doctor familiar with this procedure, and if you are like me, you will walk out feeling like a champ. It's not that expensive either.

Good luck,

ADG

it's pretty obvious you need to see a doctor and start some kind of rehabilitation, massages, etc.

First of all, go see a good Naprapath. Naprapathy is awesome for relief, it's inexpensive and natural. It's also safer than chiropractic adjustments in-case you have a condition that can be further aggravated.

What you're describing sounds like a degenerative condition. The fact you haven't seeked proper care or treatment is very irresponsible on your part. You need a fucking MRI and a full, proper diagnosis of the problem. Don't start downing pain pills because you get shocking sensations and your lower spine feels like it gets dislocated. You need to first know what the problem is, (a diagnosis) then you need to start treatment. Pain pills aren't a permanent solution.

Start now, your inactivity and poor habits will probably cause you to be in more pain later in life.

Kratom have helped some people with back pain. It's worth a try.
You can easily order it online, it's pretty cheap and legal in most countries.

Also, it makes you fell really good.

With some very limited info, it really hard to determine your cause of back pain. It appears though the pain you describe is a radiating pain which can be cause by for example a disc herniation (the cartilage between your vertebrate pop out out and irritate the nerve), osteoarthritis of the spine (degeneration of bone that result in compression of your disc) or possibly mechanical alignment issue of your spine. From limited info of your history (i.e. your age, if you are a smoker, your weight/height, do you have arthritis?), I think the first two cases could be the most likely causes.

Going to a chiro is not a recommendation as their practice is specialization on manipulation of the spine and you don't want that at this moment as your back pain is chronic. Although, I'm aware chiro also do other "therapy" but really they do everything like taking x-ray to prescribing and herbal stuff and even physical therapy since their scope of manipulation is very limited and they need to charge for other stuff. If you need therapy for physical and/or movement dysfunction such as back pain I would advise physical therapy as that is their specialization and their research is well documented.

What you can try is the following:

1) Electro Therapy like TENS which can cost as little as 100 bucks for the device. However there are other electrotherapy available such as ultrasound.

2) Try doing some basic exercises to re-align your vertebrate if for example, your vertebrate have been compressed.

3) After performing the exercises try hot or cold pac on your back to see if it helps.

4) Try to use different area to compensate for your weakness. Example, when lifting a heavy box, don't bend and use your back, squat and use your legs.

5) Take meds if it help, but don't over do them. Increasing med will increase toxic in your body which can affect other systems and will cause even more problems later on.

6) Perform proper body mechanics. example, while sitting at the computer are u having a forward head posture. If so sit up properly and do a chin tuck exercise.

7) Take breaks! If you sit 8 hrs a day at a computer reading crap on gfy, take breaks in between and stretch or go for a walk.

8) If you are overweight, you need to start loosing it dude. Even 5 lbs make a big difference. Try to keep your BMI under 29.

Chronic back pain isn't something you can just overcome overnight. Although depending on how bad your back have worsen following the simple stuff I told you above not only can improve your symptoms but more importantly it will stop or slow the progression of chronic back pain. This is important because if you already have a bad back and do nothing, it will get worst overtime unless you change your habit.

im not suggesting this will solve everything... but i had back problems for several years. I went to multiple chiropractors and while they were able to temporarily help, they were not able to completely alleviate the problem.

i then went to a back doctor and he figured out that i had one leg that was something like 2 centimeters longer than the other. he fitted me for orthotics and my back never hurt again... instant cure for what bothered me for years.

he also had some machine where i would lay down and he would strap me in around the chest and at my feet, and it would slowly stretch me and then release over and over

not sure what that machine was called.. it hurt like fuck when it was doing it, but it helped stetch me out nicely

but first thing i would do is check if you need orthotics. my mom struggled with back pain as well for years, and once i told her about my orthotics she went and got checked and needed some too... her back pain went away immediately as well

i also did some back strenghtening exercises which im sure helped as well, especially if you are someone that finds themselves sitting in front of a computer all day, your back muscles will shrink

its worth a shot, and a lot cheaper than multiple trips to the chiro. and definitely try them before you start swallowing whatever pain meds people in here are suggesting. if you do decide to use pain meds, go with the best... weed ;)

good luck
