The article said she was walking home with a sibling and friends, I believe, but got into an argument with one of them and took off alone. I would not let my 8-year-old walk a mile home from school without adult supervision. I won't even let him wait at the bus stop alone in the morning. But I get accused of being overprotective all the time.

Was hoping for a better outcome then this! Hell I'm over protected as it is with my two boys! I couldn't even think about how I would be if I had a little girl! I wouldn't even let my 13 year old boy walk home a mile! Hell just this year I allowed him to walk home from the bus stop which is right down the street 8 house down from where we live!

It has to be someone she knew, I can see the scenario now: She gets into a spat with one of her peers, ran ahead of them and someone she knew like a neighbor or uncle offers her a ride. Since she knows him and thinks she can beat the rest of the kids home, she willingly jumps in. It goes bad from there.

Unfortunately there are so many remote/rural areas that seldom get any passing traffic that the residents get a false sense of security. Many of them don't even lock their front doors, assuming no one ever goes out there. This sounds like a similar setting.

My heart goes out to the family, especially the dad who lives in NC. I couldn't imagine anything happening to my girls but know it would be far worse if I wasn't there.

Of those 16 it looks like there were around 4-5 that lived within 1 mile.

How much of the info about the registered sex offenders is public record in the US?

Can you check how many/where the ones in your area are located?

Don't really see how it would have to be somebody she knew. She's was only 7, any predator could easily overpower her and take her to the abandoned house.
