Unfortunately there are so many remote/rural areas that seldom get any passing traffic that the residents get a false sense of security. Many of them don't even lock their front doors, assuming no one ever goes out there. This sounds like a similar setting.
My heart goes out to the family, especially the dad who lives in NC. I couldn't imagine anything happening to my girls but know it would be far worse if I wasn't there.

Don't really see how it would have to be somebody she knew. She's was only 7, any predator could easily overpower her and take her to the abandoned house.
