Comcast launches its anti-botnet security program

Should be interesting how this pans out. Maybe setting a new ISP standard?

http://www.comcast.com/About/PressRe....ashx?PRID=926
The Constant Guard Security Program comprises three core components:

* A dedicated Customer Security Assurance (CSA) team of highly skilled security professionals that proactively contact customers to respond to issues relating to bots, malware and infected PCs, as well as other related security issues.

* Technology and software including:
o McAfee® Internet Security Suite (a $120 value, available at no additional charge to Comcast High-Speed Internet customers in a single download from www.comcast.net/security) provides customers with a comprehensive set of security tools designed to protect against a variety of online threats, including viruses.
o Comcast Toolbar (free download from www.comcast.net/security) includes spyware detection and removal, a pop-up ad blocker and anti-phishing software.
o Best in class technology deployed within the Comcast network and designed to help fight spam, phishing attacks and viruses. Partners include Bizanga, Cloudmark®, Goodmail CertifiedEmail?, and Return Path, as well as the use of blocklists from Spamhaus and TrendMicro?.
* Security Channel www.comcast.net/security is a Web portal that includes real-time security alerts, tips, tools and other resources, like Internet safety games, that help educate and protect consumers.

So in short, they want to help you clean your computer of other toolbars and such, while making sure that only *their* toolbar stays alive in your system.

It's all about branding and value added services... they even rebrand Internet Explorer when you install their software (which you don't need at all, Windows already comes with all the networking capability to connect your cable modem).

It's all about completely taking over your computer so you don't churn to another provider.... anyone remember AOL and their "free cd's" - just TRY uninstalling that shit.... good fucking luck.

Next to useless. A user will disable it when asked to by a website promising a Jessica Alba sex tape.

Will the users keep it updated? For the past few years, almost every new PC comes with some sort of AV trial. Most people I know never renew or replace these once they expire. I suspect this is the general trend.

My old county Comcast didn't make me install anything but in the new county I'm living, I was forced to. In order to get past their setup of the modem, I had to install software. I removed it right after but still a pain in the ass.
