I read the thread about people who choose not to vaccinate their kids and wanted to post but knew if I was flamed for what I said I would turn low class in a hot minute and unleash the witty sailor in me. After my daughter's first round of vaccinations she had high fevers and convulsions (seizures I later found). I called the Dr. and he said not to worry, 1 in 175 children have reactions and that it was normal. He said the reactions are mostly due to the DPT (Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis combo) vaccine and that separating them out would be a good idea next round. After much research I decided there would be no second round. I spoke with families that had lost their children after the same reactions or whose children had severe lifelong issues including but not limited to epilepsy, retardation and other neurologic illnesses. 1 in 300 of the DPT vaccinations result in seizures. If you are a gambler, I say go for it. I am not. There were vaccinations I did allow a few years later, but spaced out and not including the DPT. I don't regret my decision whatsoever and have to sign waivers for school. To each their own

Yup we passed on the DPT as well. Just not worth the risk for diseases they are VERY unlikely to ever come in contact with. Nothing wacko about it period. Risking your kids health on vaccines that are known to cause issues, or unproven is the wacko part.

The sad part of it is that they are injecting people with a semi-live flu. They don't really understand what the virus will do in itself (unless it was created) much less what injecting a small part of it into the WORLD population.. Maybe it's just the way I read things but I don't hear anything but bad news from them. What would it be like without them? I dunno. But what I do know is I've made it this long without many hospital visits outside of various stupid shit like punching walls breaking carpals. To the best of my knowledge all vaccines carry risk of complications...up to and including death...but they are for the greater good. One can be a carrier of something that does not affect them but will affect others.

That is an awful, awful article.

No new link has been found. The neurologists in question are being told to watch closely so that if there is an increase in cases of GBS that might be linked to the vaccine, action can be taken immediately. Even if it seems very unlikely based on current data, keeping an eye open is always a good idea. Also, keep in mind that the swine flu already killed more people in the US than would be likely to die from adverse side-effects if the entire population got the vaccination.

But regardless of this asinine article, there will probably be no reason to take the vaccine if you don't already have a weak immune system, and population-wide vaccinations are likely to be canceled in most countries. Not because the vaccine is turning out to have dangerous new side-effects, but because this particular strain of influenza appears to be turning out to be less serious than previously thought.

I used to avoid the regular flu vaccines, but after getting knocked hard by bad flu once I began getting them. I kinda figured that people had been getting them for some time, so it probably was ok.

I really do not know about this swine flu situation. I guess because I'm older, I'm in a group that seems to be less severely effected by the virus, so there may not be a need for the vaccine.

I'm not a big conspiracy buff, but I don't really like to see people forced into a situation where they are taking meds with unknown side effects either.

Having taken the regular vaccine, I may go ahead and opt for this one as well when it is offered.

Scientists are often off the mark. That's the point of science: making judgments based on facts, and adjusting your judgments as you gain new information. But while scientists are not infallible, they at least know what they're talking about, and base their positions on current research.

Here's what you apparently don't know:

Risk of getting GBS (which has about a 5% death rate) after a flu vaccination is thought to be around 1-2 in a million.
Risk of getting GBS after getting the flu is thought to be around 1-2 in 50k.
Risk of dying from the flu is around 1-1.5 in 10k.

Apparently.

Slightly under 600 cases of GBS were reported, slightly over 400 were confirmed, and about 70% of patients made a full recovery within the first year. So yes, if you claim that "thousands were maimed for life", misinformation most certainly has been spread.

In that case, by the way, the most likely cause wasn't the vaccine itself, but the fact that some batches became contaminated with another disease.

And no, an instance of accidental contamination is not cause to believe that vaccines are inherently unsafe. After all, even with that particular instance, the risk of dying of it was still smaller than that of dying from food poisoning on, say, a 2 week vacation.

And please, don't forget that the swine flu currently going around has already killed nearly 2k people worldwide, with nearly 500 of those in the US - 20 times as many as complications from that vaccine killed 30 years ago.

I don't have distaste for science just for the blind trust put in it by people like you even though it has been shown time and time again that science has been incredibly wrong time and time over and over again. Shown to make unforgivable mistakes. My gene pool is actually extremely good. No diseases in our family line except for some cancer here and there. Extremely long life for most everyone in my family. Strong ability to fight off illness etc. So I don't think its too wise to allow someone to stick a needle in me with untested and unproven vaccines, when the last go round 25 people were killed and tons more ended up with issues.
