Apparently.

Slightly under 600 cases of GBS were reported, slightly over 400 were confirmed, and about 70% of patients made a full recovery within the first year. So yes, if you claim that "thousands were maimed for life", misinformation most certainly has been spread.

In that case, by the way, the most likely cause wasn't the vaccine itself, but the fact that some batches became contaminated with another disease.

And no, an instance of accidental contamination is not cause to believe that vaccines are inherently unsafe. After all, even with that particular instance, the risk of dying of it was still smaller than that of dying from food poisoning on, say, a 2 week vacation.

And please, don't forget that the swine flu currently going around has already killed nearly 2k people worldwide, with nearly 500 of those in the US - 20 times as many as complications from that vaccine killed 30 years ago.
