Intel's Quad core heat sink worst engineering disaster in 20 years..
Am I the only one whom thinks the heatsink set up Intel did with their quad cores is the biggest engineering disaster in computer history? They want you to mount a big chunk of aluminum with a fan on top onto a motherboard with plastic "push pins".
This POS thing gave me nothing but troubles trying to install it, when I first built my PC. Now the last few days my PC has be shutting down out of the blue. Well it turns out the POS heat sink set up pop out of the hole and the heat sink wasn't making contact. So her I am for the last fucking 30 mins trying to get this god damn disaster of an engineering job to work and it wont. WTF were they thinking? When I bought the CPU it was $350 and they expect you to install it with the world worst heatsink design. ![]() This is what I'm dealing with.. You are supposed to somehow hold a big ass heat sink on the cup "securely with those stupid ass "plastic" push pins. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Although the heat sink itself is a piece of shit, they stay on just fine if you look at the arrows and turn them the right way. If you don't, they can and often do pop out.

Well the reason I never bought a aftermarket one was because all the ones I see use the same damn plastic push pins. I just don't get why they dont have some set up that you screw it into place with 4 screws.
Intel always comes up with the must awkward fucked up heat sink mounts.

I have thermal paste on it. It's the mounting system that sucks.

Why cry about it when you can get a much better one. Those are not the only heat sinks out there. Also they don't suck they work pretty well any idiot can figure it out. The problem is you are so used to the way fans used to be and this is something new that is just as good or better. This is why apple no longer uses the marketing scheme "think different" apple products may be better then the norm but when you ask people to use there minds they become uninterested.

Sure looks like it from the pictures, I gotcha on the whole plastic mounts on metal heatsink thing. Guess they can't win them all. Time to just just rig it =p.

That's an unusual fan for an intel heatsink. Usually they use an open frame fan.
I have built two systems with 45nm C2D's (basically the same HSF as the Quad, except for the copper base) and the heatsinks clamped down hard enough to bend the motherboards and stayed very secure. |

Ok, this isn't new to the Quad Core, nor is it an intel only problem. It's just the way that some manufacturers design their coolers. Plenty of people figured out how to use it, so why blame intel when you can't?
Anyhow, like others have said, go get a new one. The time you spent posting in here, you could have already ordered one. Seeing as you're trying to use a stock cooler, you most likely aren't into overclocking so just about any decently rated cooler off of newegg or any other e-tailer will work just fine for your cooling needs.

Scythe makes very high quality coolers for the most part. Even the mini is overkill for normal pc users though.

I'm thinking of going that route. Will free up room and make the cpu run ever cooler. Might even go as far as getting the setup with the video card shit.. My video card runs hot as fuck even though I don't do anything that's graphically intensive.. It's an old video card though.. Geforce 7800GT..

It's already been said above, but perhaps not clearly... are the screws on each leg oriented the correct way? One direction is "push & lock", the other is "release"
I've installed, hmmm, looks like 6 stock coolers over the past 18 months, haven't had any probs... |

Actually, come to think of it, the last stock cooler I installed was yesterday... :D The mainboard is still naked, for testing purposes, so I had a quick look. Assuming your cooler is similar, the slot on each pin should point "towards" the heatsink. If it's sideways then it's unlocked.

Actually had zero issues with that heatsink in a couple installs once I got it installed. I agree its kind of a pain to get on.
On my HTPC I used the Scythe Mini Ninja so I could go fanless with a Core2duo. |

The only problems I have with the stock cooler are wondering how the hell the mainboard can take that kind of mechanical stress.
Plus the more recent ones seem to be less chunky and more cheaply made... the one on the left is from a Pentium D circa 2005, the one on the right from a more recent dual core CPU. It's about a third of the weight and has no copper. ![]() BTW... left side is locked (use this to install), right is unlocked |

Yes I'm running a Giggabyte P35-DQ6 which had just been released when I built this machine. That's the reason I didn't buy a custom cpu cooler when I first built the machine, because there were not many reviews on the mobo and no on had any articles on what heat sinks would fit.
I had planned on buying an aftermarket heat sink but I managed to get the OEM on to work, so I kind of forgot about replacing it until now. This is pics of what I'm dealing with so I have limited room around the CPU, meaning any aftermarket heat sink would need to go vertical. ![]()

Well it seems kind of like it's bent or something, because no matter what I try, I can't get all the pegs to stay in the mobo. I get 3 in and the 4th is always not all the way in. It doesn't matter which side, it's always the last one I push in causes the the one diagonally away from it to pop out.

Why would you pay 300 or more for a cpu, be serious enough to install it yourself, and use the 10 dollar piece of crap Intel gives you?
Its like buying an ipod and keeping those crappy headphones Apple includes.

The recent ones seem less chunky because the Core family CPU's run much cooler than Pentium D's. And the Core 2 Quad heatsinks do have a copper base...

Because of that I never ordered a heat sink when I built the machine I just used the OEM one, and never changed it out because I never had issues until now. Everything in this machine is high end when I built it, with the exception of the heat sink.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835227005 I highly recommend the Domino ALC water cooler. Its about 75 bucks, installs so easily and keeps the CPU a few degrees cooler than most Hsink Fans. I have 3 of them and will continue to buy for my rigs until they stop making it. The best part about it is the free space around the CPU, so you can easily swap out RAM.
